None and Done
For all those who entered pools for 'who'll go down first in 2007, Pavano or Hampton' the results are in. Hampton's going under the knife again, out for the year.

Cintron....
Perhaps the start is because of Iguchi's wrist, but think Alex has a better shot tonight anyway against Harden.  Twins, Tigers, Royals all lost tonight!

he's had arm/shoulder troubles
the past three seasons. didn't pitch last season. he should have been a stalwart in our rotation by now. i hope it's all past him because he's a good one.

if the camera

back in the west and the real erstad stands up.

pods
lead off double. he keeps making me crazy by playing well. Him and erstad need to start sucking so i can get the pleasure of watching brian anderson suck.

I guess Erstad should have bunted
I think Pods leadoff hit made Harden mad.

Good to see, especially after Ponson self-destructed up in South Manitoba.

I can't believe Chavez
won another gold glove--what a joke of an award

by BustedFlush on Apr 9, 2007 9:38 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

not sure chavez
is the poster child for the award being a joke. you can coin flip between crede and him. there are far worse choices made.

by larry on Apr 9, 2007 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're right
I am sure that there are better examples to pick from, but Chavez is basically handed the award each year.

Also, B Mac gave a better performance tonight:

Black Jack
gives more insight than Hawk or DJ, who just make excuses for players sucking. Maybe he should call the game by himself

Have you ever
talked to someone who listens to a Sox game from out of market? Our announcers are the biggest jokes in baseball.

by southsider80 on Apr 9, 2007 9:49 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I couldn't imagine
a worse crew to listen to if you weren't a sox fan. I hate listening to other teams' announcers rooting like little kids for their team. Hawk is the worst at that.

by rhombusface on Apr 9, 2007 9:51 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think Pods running in that spot
is the worst decision--if he gets caught, Paulie gets a fresh at bat.

Of couse, he just watched strike three.

by BustedFlush on Apr 9, 2007 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Black Jack
should've mentioned Erstad doesn't see the ball too well from any pitcher, not just Dick Harden.

by Paxson Jackson on Apr 9, 2007 9:53 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I have actually been impressed by Erstad...
so far this season.  But good God... he clearly can't pick up Harden and according to those numbers this is not a new thing.  Why aren't we seeing BA exactly?

by CatBrains on Apr 9, 2007 9:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

is any Sox hitter
going to catch up to the same exact fastball Harden is tossing in there? Not getting too many breaking pitches over...

I bet
DJ loathes Hawk the way that Wimpy did. I actually don't mind DJ and his cheery disposition. I just think him and Hawk are an odd, awkward couple. I like hearing old tales of the Bo Jackson Era.

Wow... Contreras doesn't have anything.

by rhombusface on Apr 9, 2007 10:04 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

DJ
Is always better with some one other than Hawk. Last year when he did Sox/Cubs games and spilt with their announcer and did national Fox, or tonight, he sounds less like an intimidated doofus. Hawk is a Reinsdorf mouthpiece, and DJ is forced to follow suit.

Assuming the 9th goes smoothly (KOW)
This has to be the best executed game I have ever seen the Sox give in Oakland.  Nothing GREAT, but everything solid: hitting, defense, and pitching.

Oh right...
excluding that base running hiccup...

Is Ozzie
overdoing this righty / lefty thing?

I know every game is important - maybe even moreso this yr. in the AL Central.

Yeah...
but doesn't he always overdo it?

by CatBrains on Apr 9, 2007 11:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Man...
and you know Pods had that triple in him...

by CatBrains on Apr 9, 2007 11:41 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I wonder if Contreras'
ERA drop of 52.71 (63.00 to 10.21) ranks with the greatest 1 game drops ever?

by ballyb on Apr 9, 2007 11:41 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I dropped him from my fantasy team...
Still don't think it was a mistake though.

by DeeDubs24 on Apr 9, 2007 11:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Technically...
it cannot be the best, since you have had pitchers end their first outings with infinite ERAs.

But yeah, I am still happy about the Count's big drop.

Cintron
Honestly, I don't see what he brings.  He can play an adequate 2b & SS, but he doesn't really bring anything to the plate.  I don't mind having him, but I wish there was some IF depth in the minors so we could just have a young guy take those at bats.

no
but I wonder how much worse Pedro Lopez would be.  I'm sure he would be worse, I'm just curious how much more so.

Next year
One of Andy Gonzalez & Pedro Lopez will develop into a viable backup by the time camp breaks next year.

Gonzalez is the lesser defender, but he has some semblance of a batting eye.

Lopez is a slick fielder, was pushed hard -- You'll remember he was up with the Sox in '05 after Ozuna/Uribe/Iguchi all went down in Oakland -- His growth may have been stunted, but he started to adjust last year. He just might surprise some people.

Is it for big bobby's ego?
Thornton had pinpoint control. No way either of the next two hitters would have gotten on against him. Why, tax another arm?

That was a nice win
Pitching was good, bullpen was great and "ozzie ball" was used at the correct times.

I'm jumping in late...
but DJ and Blackjack...not so good.

Early on DJ mentioned how Chavez got his gold glove for having the 3rd best fielding percentage and then corrected himself.

And Blackjack recalled Paulie playing the outfield early in his career. Wha? That must have been after he was a catcher and before he took over at first.

Finally, I am personally flying out to Oakland tomorrow to choke all of those people blowing those annoying horns.

Pauly did play some OF
He was stuck behind Karros in LA, then Casey in Cinci.

He even played a few games at 3rd for us.

I mentioned it earlier in the thread, but I thought McDowell was wrong until I looked it up:

My apologies to Blackjack, but then
DJ is a big horse's behind for not knowing that about a player on a team he covers. I thought perhaps Blackjack was getting into his band's weed.

And...I still want to choke the Oakland horn blowers.

And...finally...imagine Pauly patroling the outfield! Yikes!

Almost optimistic
Beating Harden in Oakland is a big win (I know...it's only April...). Is anyone worried about Contreras' velocity? Peralta said it was down and tonight I didn't see him beyond 92 MPH. Still, it seemed like the split wasn't working for him and he still eked out a victory. That's a good sign...

by hitlesswonder on Apr 10, 2007 12:10 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Contreras
I think I saw him hit 93 a couple of times.  He's generally at 91-93 with his fastball.  More important than the extra one-or-two MPH on his fastball is the movement.  It seemed like his fastball was moving a little more tonight (or last night).
