Mayday: Sox have batrophy

Memo to Kenny Williams:

See that crowd Tuesday night at Safeco Field? (It was announced as 20,739, but that's propped up by a still healthy, but declining, season ticket base. I'd guess that it was more like 14K in attendance.) That's what happens to a once proud franchise that continues to make stupid personnel decisions costing the team wins. Need me to spell it out further? That's what USCF will look like in June if you don't find multiple competent bats to replace the junk you've assembled in order to appease your manager.

If you can honestly tell me that you haven't felt nauseous every time you first see the lineup that Ozzie's been filling out the last couple of weeks, then you need to reevaluate your skills as a GM. Nevertheless, I still believe in you. You're smart enough to know that one major league outfielder isn't going to cut it. Fix it. Now.

I realize that finding a willing trade partner on May 1st is probably asking too much, so in the mean time it's time for somebody to take the fall. And since I'm assuming that you're not very eager to experience the joy of Seppuku, that person is Greg Walker. I realize that hitting coaches don't really do a whole heckuvalot, but Walker has taken the "don't do too much" job description to new lows. He doesn't do squat.

I'm sure one of your PR staff will blog about how hard the players prepare with Walker before each game. I don't care. Your fans don't care. We want results.

Here's a (partial) list to consider:

  • This team can't hit lefties. (The couldn't hit lefties last year either. Perhaps a look in the mirror is in order?)
  • This team can't hit the best pitchers in our division, and often looks like it doesn't have a plan against them.
  • This team has the worst batting average in baseball.
  • Chad Durbin.
  • This team has the fewest non-HR extra-base hits in baseball.
  • This team, as currently constructed, is headed for 72 wins.
Fix it. Now.

Amen
We could all see this coming.  The outfield plan was pitiful, and the implementation by Ozzie somehow made it worse.

Exactly.
Mistake #1 - bringing Scott Podsednik back and expecting him to be healthy and productive all season.  Non-tendering Podsednik was such an obvious move it was ridiculous.  The only thing that I can think of is that Kenny Williams fell into the trap of thinking that "leadoff man" is a position that needs to be filled.

Mistake #2 - Not bringing in a true fourth outfielder, or if Brian Anderson was supposed to be that guy, no communication between the manager and the GM.  It was painfully clear that Guillen had no intention of using Anderson in any role, and Williams had a responsibility at that point of either (a) forcing the issue with Guillen and somehow making him play Anderson or (b) dealing Anderson to an organization that will use him and finding someone else who can do the job.  Luis Terrero is not the answer to any question.

And that's ignoring obvious blunders, such as having seven relievers and nobody on the bench who can hit worth a tinker's damn.

Some fun Walker Quotes
April 15th
You have to take it for what it is. We're trying to encourage them not to get down on themselves, as well as not make excuses

April 15th
The conditions aren't really conducive to hitting

April 24th: on Konerko
"Between the ears," Walker said prior to Monday's game. "He has too much going on in his brain right now.

Walkers replacement must not come from within
We need to outside and find someone who can work on a fundamentally sound swing.  Line drive, good contact.  Our guys and the park will make the ball fly out.  They dont need to try to hit one out.  I would like to see someone who preaches being a tough 2 strike hitter.  No more lift and pull hitting.

by southsideirish71 on May 2, 2007 12:30 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Who knows if Walker is the real problem
But at this point, it almost doesn't matter. Have to change something, and hitting coach is the easiest thing to change. The guys just need an actual wake up call that will hopefully happen with realizing they cost someone his job. That, and perhaps the new hitting coach can actually provide some different coaching techniques or preparatory habits. I haven't had much of an opinion on Walker because it's hard to know what goes on in the cages, during BP, etc, but we're a month in and the offense blows. Cheat's right, something changes, and now.

Unrelated
I'm clicking through the Carolina League (hitting) leaderboard looking at the ages. There's about 20 guys with an OPS above .800. One of them has a birthday in '85 or Younger, Cunningham, who was born in '86 and currently ranks in the top 5 in OPS with a mark of .980.

Edgardo Baez is the first guy I find with a b'day in '85. He's batting .261/.311/.435 with a K/BB ratio that pales in comparison to Cunningham.

That kid is really good, and I'm just now beginning to see how much he dominating the league at such a young age.

OBP
I distinctly remember Rick Hahn talking about the Sox desire to put OBP in the top of the order. It was an offseason radio interview, I think, and he ven mentioned the possibility of a non-traditional leadoff man (Youkilis-like I assume). Then the team goes out and keeps Pods and signs Ozuna. And they move Iguchi down in the order for Erstad. Those are just bad decisions by both the GM and Guillen.

If Williams does ever want to step down, I'd like to see what Hahn would do.

by hitlesswonder on May 2, 2007 12:55 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm stoked about Cunningham too, but ...
while heads are rolling, shouldn't someone take the fall for the Sox minor league system's dearth of legit hitting prospects?  And apparent failure to sign any worthwhile international free agent prospects?

I'll give them credit where it's due in finding pitchers, but since Maggs and Carlos Lee, the system has come up with one decent hitter in Crede and not a single Latin free agent prospect.  Did scouting personnel change post-Maggs/Caballo?

In terms of hitters, in the same period, Oakland produced Jason Giambi, Eric Chavez, Miguel Tejada, and Nick Swisher.  The Mets obviously have David Wright and Jose Reyes.  The Marlins system produced Derrek Lee, Edgar Renteria, Mike Lowell, Miguel Cabrera, and Luis Castillo.  The Yankees came up with Posada, Jeter, Soriano, and Cano.  The Twins have Mauer, Morneau, Hunter, and Cuddyer and are also responsible for David Ortiz.  That's just off the top of my head so the exact debut dates of these guys may be a little off, but I think you get the gist.  Obviously, I'm cherry picking the organizations with the most productive minor league systems over the last ten years, but shouldn't that be the standard we hold the Sox to?

Other sundry criticisms
As Sox Machine points out "Wiki Gonzalez raised his average to .314 with two hits today, and is 6-for-10 off lefties in Charlotte so far."

How can Molina be up with the Sox? If Anderson gets sent down for Terrero, clearly Molina and Gonzalez should switch as well. How much better would Gonzalez's .200 average vs LHP be than Molina's .000? Apparently not enough to get Gonzalez out of  Charlotte. I just don't understand what the Sox are doing.

by hitlesswonder on May 2, 2007 1:40 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

look at wiki's career numbers in the minors
that's right in line with what he's done at AAA throughout his career. then look at his major league numbers. somehow i doubt that wiki, at the age of 33, has learned how to hit. flip a coin between molina and wiki. it doesn't matter.

by larry on May 2, 2007 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It especially doesn't matter...
As Guillen won't play either one.

That's another thing the Sox need to do quickly - determine whether Hall will be ready to go by the end of May, and if not, find a suitable backup.  At the rate Guillen's going, Pierzynski will break down by mid-July.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on May 2, 2007 10:37 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, but
we already unequivocally know that Molina is going to hit absolutely nothing. So why not take a chance with Wiki? Yes, histroically he's proven to be crap in the bigs, but the Sox can only go up from where there at now.

But either way, Wiki/Molina, it doesn't matter. The Sox have much, MUCH bigger fish to fry these days.

Here's to really hoping Hall comes back. And soon.

Not until we see it, no.
But an aforementioned comment is accurate. Ozzie's not going to play either of them. And, like I said--backup catcher is the least of our woes. Let's start worrying about the bench when we have the starters figured out.

Wiki, career against LHP:
.278/.355/.439.

He's also had one above-average season at the major-league level.  Meanwhile, Molina posted a .614 OPS at Birmingham last year.

This is a drop in the bucket, but at the same time, this team needs offense wherever it can find it.  And AJ's played in every single game this year, and we saw what the workload did to him last year in the second half.

catcher's job
contary to popular belief, isn't just looking at the dugout, putting his hand between his crotch, sticking out a couple fingers, catching the ball, and then throwing it back. i don't think the pitchers were complaining about the signs wiki was relaying from the dugout.

The Sox...
fired Von Joshua in the middle of the 2001 season. And that was a year after they led the league in runs. In 2005 I was able to find that the Indians fired Eddie Murray after a 6-5 loss to the White Sox on June 5th. But I doubt that anyone can pinpoint there success down the stretch to that.

But Walker knew the risks of the job as highlighted here in the press release when Walker was hired.

by rebstock on May 2, 2007 7:33 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Walker can see the writing on the wall
''We're not a real confident team right now,'' Walker said. ''That's on me. We've already heard all the excuses, the weather, guys working through mechanical problems ... we're past all that now. It's time to move forward. This has evolved into a real bad mental struggle. It's snowballed. It's on me to get them going.''
'It comes down to being a coach,'' Walker said of the offense. ''To be honest, I don't feel like I've done a good enough job following up when guys did have a good game.''
Asked to explain what he meant by that, Walker pointed out that Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko and Joe Crede each had big games over the last week, and he should have taken time to pull them aside and emphasize the good they did in those games -- both mentally and mechanically.

''Mechanics aren't the problem,'' Walker said. ''We're dealing with anxiety and pressing. But these guys are professionals. You flip over most of their baseball cards and you'll see the numbers that back that up.''

Now Walker wants to see those numbers make a 2007 appearance.

''We're a team that's mentally beaten right now,'' Walker said. ''We need to get that swagger back.''

last night's game
It was dreadful to watch, which ties in with your first point.  A team like last night's just is not fun to watch.  Players who I can't stand watching bat:  Pierzynski, Cintron, Mackowiak.  The .300 hitter from Minnesota is gone with AJ, he goes up there looking for a HR and that isn't good when you have a poor eye.  Cintron is done, finished.  Mackowiak is fine as a utility player, but not as a starter.  How often does he swing and badly miss on a ball that is outside by about a foot?

The good news is Vazquez pitched well.

Go Badgers!

by shaftr on May 2, 2007 9:23 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Pitched well, yes
But how long before the pitchers press because they know there is no run support and begin to faulter. Not to mention the defense is Ok, but at times with the lineup, can be questionable.

You nailed it on the head
When I heard Hawk announcing the line-up, I literally felt sick to my stomach. I thought to myself, "Self, they are undoubtedly going to lose this game."

JOE CREDE AT DH? WTF?!

So this is what it feels like to be a Royals fan.

I only half paid attention after a few innings and listened on the radio for the last few innings. Did Hawk and DJ ever address (give an opinion about) Brian Anderson other than to say HE GONE?

As far as Walker is concerned, I love those guys from the 80s and 90s - who can forget immortals such as Miguel Dilone, Casey Parsons, Dave Stegman, Lorenzo Gray, Norberto Martin, Mike Huff and Warren Newson? Anyway, a fresh coaching approach might be in order, though I don't think Walker is in any way responsible for veteran players swinging ice-cold bats.

The pitiful state of the White Sox
What is going on! Everyday day some new excuse and no RESULTS. Konerko is going to duplicate the 2003 season [ .233 BA], Thome is injured too often and an injured player is no help[surprise surprise], when was an entire team unable to sacrifice, drag bunt, hit to the opposite field by design and when needed, not hit lefties at all, look pitiful against low and outside pitches instead of learning to go with the pitch, I cannot go on it is to basic and the Sox are not learning anything other than- "it is early" and "this team will hit". Ozzie talks about Minnesota but he doesn't learn from them, look up Ozzie and you will see them and everyone else ahead of you as the games drop away. Why can I figure out Posednik is not a major leaguer, Anderson was not a major leaguer, who wants to stand and say " I built this team and I am proud of them"?

by Florida Jim on May 2, 2007 11:06 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Wake me when this is over...
No, not the season, but when Kenny GM comes to his senses and admits (and fixes) his roster construction, AND reins in Ozzie's desire for these types of players.  Sweet Lou has been raked over the coals for not knowing who among Hendry's misfits should play/bat where.  Ozzie has his share of misfits too, but he LIKES and WANTS them and gets a pass when he misuses them.  For example, the reason Rob Mack was brought in last year was because Ozuna proved inadequate at 3b in '05.  Yet where did they play last night?  Thanks Ozzie.
(This was going to be longer and more detailed, but something's come up here.  I'll close (for now) by saying that other than pitching, this year's Sox look very much like this year's Cubs: a few good/great players/hitters and a box of spare parts.)

I think the main thing with firing Walker is that you would be making a statement as an organization.  "This level of play will not fly and players and coaches will be held accountable."  Now I am one that doesn't think a hitting coach doesn't do a whole hell of a lot.  But sometimes you need to shake things up.  This would be a bit of a "wake up call."

Most agree
whether Walker remains or is dismissed, the offense won't change much unless injured players return and the abysmal averages across the team begin to turn around.

It's always the same discussion back and forth among fans when a coach's job security is under question. You'll hear how the "players effect the game," and "how much can someone do?" If such beliefs were to be taken under consideration, no coaches would EVER be fired.

Personally, without proof to substantiate my claim, if the White Sox return him next week and their offense hasn't shown signs of improvement, Walker shouldn't be on this ballclub.

Step 1 in ensuring job security for Walker is for the offense not to make Miguel "7.54ERA" Batista resemble the rocket armed assassin, Chad Durbin.

Even Ozzie knows his lineups are crap.
''I had tears in my eyes when I was doing the lineup,'' Guillen joked before the game against the Mariners. ''I can even hit in this lineup.''

Rather than worrying about adding through a deal, however, Guillen said the Sox have to learn how to win without Podsednik (strained right adductor) and Thome (strained rib cage).

"Yeah, we can't hit worth shit, and we're throwing guys out there who shouldn't even be major leaguers.  But it's no big.  They'll just have to learn 'how to win.'"

you get the feeling
[and there's no way anyone outside the clubhouse could answer that question totally accurately] that the clubhouse - at least for position players - isn't all that conducive to young players. i'm not saying there's any malice or anything towards BA or young players per se. you're going to have cliques in any clubhouse [bullpen guys, starters, back-ups, spanish speaking players, veterans, and so on] and they're not necessarily a problem and there's often overlap. it just seemed like BA didn't have a group to really "fit in" with, especially now that his BFF was traded. i'm not sure there was a veteran who "took him under his wing" and our team is not exactly filled with youngsters. the apparent attitude of the coaching staff towards young players doesn't help but i'm not sure that bleeds over to the players.

some ozzie quotes
[Bob Sherwin]
"With all due respect, anybody who pitches against the White Sox right now looks like Cy Young. That's the truth. ... We're not hitting. It's hard to win games when you get four hits, three hits every game. ... I said a few days ago that the pitching has to step up to help the offense and they're doing it. When you're not as good a club offensively, a lot of guys start looking at each other and think, 'What's going on here?' instead of just going out and swinging and having fun. ... I don't want to say lucky, but I'm grateful to God where we are right now, they way we're hitting. It should be pretty ugly. We have to have faith in them. We have confidence. I know we can come out of our shell. We have the people there. It's just a matter of time when we can do it."

Offense
It is true the White Sox have not been able to hit lefties for the past couple years.  Somehow, they were able to get enough done offensively in 2005 behind the airtight pitching, but this year it just isn't happening because of a lack of clutch hitting.  Simple batting averages and ERA obviously doesn't tell the whole story.  The Sox got timely hits in '05, mashed the ball in '06, and now are not hitting - either in a timely or untimely fashion.

The thing is, guys like Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko are professional hitters with lots of big league experience who should be able to handle lefties, especially being right-handed.  Hopefully they will find a way because the Sox are going have to hit Sabathia, Santana, and the like to win this division...

Beginning Wednesday, street light banners commemorating a series of special events in Chicago are going on the auction block for charity.

Some of the banners were shown off Tuesday, including those featuring Pres. Barack Obama both before and after his election.

A White Sox World Series Championship banner, signed by pitcher Mark Buehrle, is also being sold, as is a Blackhawks playoff banner signed by Denis Savard and Stan Mikita.

The bidding starts at 12 p.m. Wednesday at Daley Center. Money raised goes to help the Chicago Anti-hunger Federation and the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
