A second thought re Shaffer:
Why now?  The draft is done, so what's the urgency as opposed to the off-season?
Maybe, just maybe, there's some disagreement in the ranks as to what "major league ready" means as it relates to possible deals.  Perhaps Kenny knows the importance of getting this 'right' and doesn't trust Shaffer not to be 'wrong'.
Anybody else have a take?
It should be called Bill Veeck Park!

by Chiburb on Jun 22, 2007 2:06 PM CDT reply actions

seems to me...
.. that the amateur baseball scouting thing is pretty in off-season mode at this point. All the amateurs are pretty much finished playing this season and the draft is over.

It also seems to me that the Sox could be re-tooling their whole amateur scouting crew too.

by ruffster on Jun 22, 2007 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions

could be they have a replacement in mind?
Maybe someone from another organization they want to scoop up before he takes another job?  (No idea if this is true.)

What's Al Goldis doing these days?  Say what you will about Goldis, his first-round picks (McDowell, Ventura, Thomas, & Fernandez) did not lack for potential.  It's true Shaffer had a lower draft position when he took over, but the quality of Sox 1st-rounders wasn't great even in the post-94 decline.

Don't worry Cheat, Kenny is definitely dealing...
come the trading deadline.

Did anyone hear Kenny's interview from earlier today on Comcast SportsNet?  Kenny basically said that he would like to keep the core White Sox players (i.e. Buehrle) but he said that he will listen to offers and move these core players if the right package comes around.  Kenny is holding out for the highest bidder.

I think Buehrle, Dye, Iguchi, and possibly even Contreras are all gone at the deadline.

by SSH2005 on Jun 22, 2007 2:47 PM CDT reply actions

"Belton" Bill Melton is such a homer...
He doesn't think that Buehrle will be traded because the Sox will lock him up long-term.

However, he does think that Dye will be traded and that he will bring a lot of talent back.

by SSH2005 on Jun 22, 2007 2:53 PM CDT reply actions

Melton is 50/50 on whether Iguchi and Uribe...
will be back next season or if the Sox will acquire a new 2B and SS.

by colintj on Jun 22, 2007 2:57 PM CDT reply actions

Bourgeois...
is not a prospect.  Not that that means that he won't see time for the Sox next year.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jun 22, 2007 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

He's definitely not a prospect
but I think he could handle 150 AB against LHP.  He's got a solid number of SB w/ few CS (it's like 16:4 or something...I was just looking at it), so I think he'd be decent out there.  In the very least, I think the pair of them could make it worth the draft pick we should (I hope) get if Iguchi maintains his Type B status.  If not, maybe we can resign him on the cheap anyway.  We'll see.

FORGIVE ME GREG WALKER FOR I HAVE SINNED. IT'S BEEN A YEAR SINCE I CONSISTANTLY HIT THE BALL.

by chisox on Jun 22, 2007 5:45 PM CDT reply actions

If Guillen...
was anything but a pessimist right now, I'd have even more questions about his sanity than I already do.

A new manager isn't going to do anything.

The only solution is to blow up the team and start from scratch.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jun 22, 2007 5:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Girardi
said today the time isn't right, and reiterated it's because of family. He doesn't want to coach in the middle of a season. (per Mike & Mike show) He did say that come next spring he wants to be coaching.

If Ozzie walks, Girardi should be hired.

He's a great manager for young players. That's what the Sox should be next year - young.

Ozzie is not the best at developing young talent.

I think...
you may be right.  Girardi's dream job would probably be with the Yankees.  He had some harsh things to say about the way the Marlins do things.

Since I'd like the Sox to emulate the Marlins a little bit, I don't see that Girardi would be a good fit.

I think Girardi got too much credit for what success the Marlins had last year.  They were a better team than most people thought they were.

I disagree.

Great fielder.
Hit reasonably in 2nd half last year.
1st man out to defend AJ.

Then he got into a pissing contest with Ozzie & Williams and lost. And they ground him to a pulp.

He's no Aaron Rowand, but it's not true that "has no heart."

Brian Anderson has no heart
I'm not saying he's not a good guy but it takes a sense of urgency and dedication to succeed 162 games a season.  I never saw that from him.  The way he's playing in Charlotte is even more proof.  The sent him down so he could straighten himself out but he's doing the opposite.  If he had gone down and hit decently the sox would have gladly recalled him.

He's organizational dead -weight as it stands now.  It's up to him to prove the naysayer otherwise

FORGIVE ME GREG WALKER FOR I HAVE SINNED. IT'S BEEN A YEAR SINCE I CONSISTANTLY HIT THE BALL.

by chisox on Jun 22, 2007 6:50 PM CDT up reply actions

He hit very decently
until he hurt his shoulder. Not sure what exactly happened, but he's been DHing. Anyone know?

IMO, by the way he was treated at the end of last year, spring training and early this season, I think you're kidding yourself if you think "the sox would have gladly recalled him."

The one Anderson negative is that he balked playing in ??? Mexico after last season.

by ballyb on Jun 22, 2007 6:57 PM CDT up reply actions

He was hovering around .300
till three weeks ago when his shoulder got fucked up. Hes been reduced to DHing but is back in cf.

by omnipotent grab on Jun 23, 2007 12:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know
I would think a good manager would be able to right the ship somewhat.  This team will most likely finish well bellow .500 when the season is over.  For him to bring the team back to .500 would not be much to ask.

The tipping point for me came this past week when Kenny and Paulie where slightly optimistic while Ozzie was saying the opposite.

Another example of his bitch mode antics is starting player that don't deserve to be on the field.  WHY IS HE STARTING CINTRON TO BENCH A REGULAR.  All the regular need to start as much as they can so the can  build some sort of rapport.

Why did he pinch hit Cintron for Terrero?  If we saw it then the GM and the players saw it too.  It made no sense.

MB left early with "flu like symptoms" and didn't address the media.

Ozzie has yet to talk to the media 45 minutes after the end of the game. He usually is done 15-20 minutes after the game.

by The Cheat on Jun 22, 2007 6:10 PM CDT reply actions

Ozzie's talking now
No reason given for the delay.

recap

  • Zambrano is a good pitcher. Been pitcher better lately. we knew it was going to be a tough game.
  • On using a different releiver in the 9th: "What else am I supposed to do?"
  • Erstad having an MRI. Asked himself out of the game after a half inning. No word on whether he'll be given the Barbaro treatment and be sent to the glue factory.
  • Talking about the Sox having no deserving All-Stars
  • Ozzie seemed unaware the Buehrle left early. Joked that "he didn't care about Buehrle"...
I still wonder what Ozzie was doing for the half hour between the time he usually holds his post-game presser and the time he finally decided to show up today.

I wish KW would fire himself
He fell into a false sense of security with the current team.  I have no confidence in him now.  Did he not see this team's fall off since last year's All-star break?  Great big-time pickup to grab a division:  Mike Mac.  WOW!

Enough of signing these people on the downside of their careers, too.  That, and his hard-on for Vasquez.  And if he trades MB because he's over 30?   Isn't resigning him an option, too?  Where are the wins going to come from?  Why not trade all 25 for a minor league team of prospects?

KW claims he has a vision and is sick of explaining it.  I don't think he understands it himself.

I'm writing the proposition and emailing it to Phil Rodgers.  He may put it in one of his column, who knows

FORGIVE ME GREG WALKER FOR I HAVE SINNED. IT'S BEEN A YEAR SINCE I CONSISTANTLY HIT THE BALL.

if it's any consolation...
... watch how the Rockies lost to the Bluejays on Friday night. Just saw it on tv- scored 3 runs on a single to left and a couple of terrible throws. Rox were up 8-6 and lost 9-8, after Tulo hit a 2-run dinger in the top of the 10th. It isn't just the Sox that flush games down the head.

it's not much of a consolation, however.

Just curious...
What are the chances that the Sox in the same situation could execute a suicide squeeze?  I'm going with ZERO chance.
