Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

Recap

For once, it seems like the Sox lose in a game they perhaps didn't deserve to.  As Hawk noted incessantly, the Tigers were flaring and duck-snortin' their feline asses off, to the tune of a .472 BABIP.  Then again, maybe they did.

In a bizarre decision, Ozzie decided to throw out nearly as many lefties in the lineup as he could.  AJ and Jerry Owens were both left in despite the thoroughly plausible alternatives offered to Guillen.  Especially considering AJ's utterly execrable line this year, there's no reason at all to throw out a ton of lefties against Andrew Miller Lefty Killer.  He was out before the 6th, but in that time almost every left handed at bat against him looked predictably futile.  The only surprise was AJ's double, which makes just the third hit lefties have managed on him so far.  That and perhaps Josh Fields' homerun.  I honestly didn't think he'd catch up to Miller's heat.  So maybe there's more hope for him than I thought.

Aside from all that, there were still reminders of the general ineptitude we've come to know and love since April.  The 6 runs we scored looks decent from a distance, but further review finds it wanting: we left 14 men on base and time and again failed to do much of anything in what Joe Morgan would call "clutch situations".  Oh well.  Another day, another loss, one step closer to Pedro Alvarez.

*****

BTW, seems the Yankee$ may be interested in 2 of our pitchers (wiz):

According to George King of the New York Post, the White Sox have scouts watching the Single-A Tampa Yankees. Outfielders Austin Jackson and Jose Tabata are the big names from that team, far as I can tell. Which White Sox players interest the Yankees? They've already had a go with Javier Vazquez and Jose Contreras, which leaves Jon Garland. It seems the Yanks might want lefty reliever Matt Thornton as well, according to King.

Fields...
Interesting game for him. Hit a supposedly 94 MPH fastball for a HR. Then got absolutely blown away on heat the next 2 times up. The at-bat with the bases loaded it looked like looking for a breaking ball. The other at-bat, he was clearly trying to hit to RF rather than pull. He also walked and singled (again on a fastball).

I suppose that performance should make me optimistic , but the 2 times Miller just blew balls past him sort of tempers everything.

Sometimes you just lose your timing...
even during an at-bat. A ball traveling at 94 MPH leaves no room for error. Start your swing just a tad late and it's TOO late... grab some bench. If the pitcher has a good off-speed pitch, then sometimes it can be really difficult to decide which he is throwing. Again, you guess wrong, and it's over. We all know this, though, we've played ball before.

It's just going to take some time and plate experience for him to be more consistent.

I was at the game
And was watching the radar gun a lot with Miller.  He was 91-94 for most of the night.  When he struck out Fields the one time.  He hit 97 on the gun on back to back pitches for the strikeout.  Thats a serious dial up of the velocity for a pitcher.

andrew miller is kind of a good pitcher
looking silly against him really isn't the end of the world.

I still can't believe how many fastballs that...
Josh Fields misses right down the cock of the plate, but I don't really care either.  He is still OPS'ing about as well as Crede in one of Crede's normal seasons and he is still only a rookie.  He will always K a lot but eventually he will start teeing off on those fastballs down the middle of the plate.

Luis Terrero to 15-day DL; Podthetic up soon...
White Sox placed outfielder Luis Terrero on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin.
Terrero might have been sent to Triple-A if not for the injury suffered at the end of last night's game. He's 5-for-29 without an RBI this month.

by The Wizard on Jul 24, 2007 12:12 PM CDT up reply actions

They'd probably keep Gonzalez.
He can at least play multiple positions.

I'm assuming that Owens will be sent down while Erstad has his week or two in the majors before hurting himself again.

You're assuming he
hurts himself in the majors - I think he's capable of doing in the minors.

it's reality!
cowley:
The Sox were expecting to have Darin Erstad (sprained left ankle) back in the mix, but he has had a setback with the injury, and his immediate future is once again cloudy.

How do you strengthen a weak groin?

Terstado hasnt had much playing time anyway
since Ozzie became infatuated with JOs speed.

At least with Pods we have another reason to lose games, besides the crappy Pen.

Just the thought of Podsednik back in the lineup
and these guys break out in groin strains (a left one to boot). I used to remember "groin strain." Never left or right, am I wrong?

Is that why Podsednik has such a hot wife? He has a left groin and a right groin?

press release
whitesox.com:
Prior to today's first game vs. the Detroit Tigers, the Chicago White Sox returned Scott Podsednik from his rehabilitation assignment to Class AAA Charlotte and reinstated the outfielder from the 15-day disabled list. The White Sox also placed outfielder Luis Terrero on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin. ... Terrero, 27, suffered his injury last night while making a diving catch in the ninth inning. He is batting .224 (24-107) with five home runs and 10 RBI in 48 games with the Sox this season.

heavy scouting
cowley:
Until then, there's still a little matter of trying to trade Jose Contreras and the $20 million he has on the books for the next two years, as well as free agent-to-be Jermaine Dye. Seattle, the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers have been scouting the Sox the hardest the last week, but that doesn't mean a deal is pending.

I'll try hard not to be disgusted by Podsednik
but the first time I see him get picked off on one of those "guessed wrong, 1-3-6 putouts" I'm going to kick a hole in something....

Ducks on the Pond
I was there yesterday and the only positive I took away was being only 20 feet away from Sox legend Billy Pierce at his statue unveiling. The 80-year old guy even tossed a ceremonial first pitch for a strike - put him in the bullpen!

It is amazing how often this team manages to load the bases and then leave everyone stranded. Just ugly. And I was surrounded by Tigers fans. Fairly mellow, but annoying none-the-less. One guy confessed he still hates Sheffield...huh? What a dufus.

Sheffield's a hell of a hitter...
but he's a colossal prick who calls everyone he has a problem with (and he has problems with LOTS of people) a bunch of racists.  I can understand not liking him.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jul 24, 2007 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Same here.
Saw the interview on HBO last night (yeah, I'm behind) with Andrea kramer where he denies ever using steroids and blames Bonds bec ause he "trusted him".  Then trashes Bonds because of his gigantism in a short period.

When he was w/ the Marlins, practically in his home town, he still bitched and moaned all the time.  Eff Sheff, even if he is a helluva hitter.

Agreed - a nice 1-2 at the top of the rotation
is invaluable.  Even if Garland gets back into a groove you keep Javy.  And with Javy looking good I'd hold out for more for Jon, at least before this trade deadline.  Offseason....?
