That has to be a record

The White Sox allowed 32 runs in a doubleheader

Using Baseball-Reference's play index, which only encompasses the last 50 years, the worst single-day runs allowed output I can find is 25 runs on August 30th of 1970 [Game 1 - Game 2]. I think I heard Bill Melton say something about the Sox record for runs allowed in a DH was 27, but I have no clue how to query Retrosheet's database to find out for sure. At any rate, this was the single worst day of White Sox pitching in my lifetime.

It was the first time in 8 years that the Sox have allowed 12 runs or more in back-to-back games. 8 years ago, they did one better, allowing 12 or more in 3 straight to the Indians [Game 1 - Game 2 - Game 3], which gives them something to shoot for, I suppose. (There's some great names in those box scores. Just looking at the losing pitchers speaks volumes; Navarro, Baldwin, Parque... Yuck!)

After watching the Twinkies
hit six homers in the nightcap - in person, sadly - I think they're completely unfamiliar with the term "duck snort".

What a waste of the best seats I've ever had at the Cell - Sec. 136, row 18.  Close enough to see the blood pouring from Redmond's head after Thome hit him with an errant swing (I have good photos to boot).  In fact, about the only thing Thome hit hard tonight.

I hate to say this
I'm taking into account that we lost 3 leadoff men this season, and a gold glove caliber 3rd basemen, but we are nowhere close to competing in the Central in the next 3 years..

I do not see Detroit and Minnesota letting up at all, and to be honest we need about a 75 million dollar offseason away from competing. I try to sit here with a straight face and say resign Mark, but lets be honest, anytime he steps in and faces Santana it's a loss. He's not better then CC, and Verlander (who we have had success against) I really don't see the need to waste money on a loved number 2, when the team can fill 2 holes by moving him. I'm tired of hearing he's loves the clubhouse and the orgnization, but anyone who offers me 16 million to play baseball in a situtation with no pressure I'd like as well. I cannot understand how anyone really wants to give hime 16% of the payroll (nearly 1/5)

- Just looking into next season

Minnesota

  • likely impact loses Tori Hunter and Luis Castillo
  • adds Liriano, another year under the belt for Garza, plus save 17 million on above names
Detroit
-impact loses Kenny Rogers, Todd Jones, Craig Monroe, Sean Casey
  • this saves them about 18 million, and if they re-up with one oe two no shocker, but their depth is well known, especially because they sign boras clients
  • I really don't see Cleveland staying on top long, because I really think their Gm puts together a bullpen like Kenny, and in my mind their defense up the middle will cause them problems against better opponents

I'm just waiting for Cintron to be moved.

Apparently the record is 35
"It was the most runs scored by one team in a doubleheader since the Boston Red Sox totaled 35 in a sweep of the Philadelphia Athletics on July 4, 1939, according to the Elias Sports Bureau."

BLEHHHH
From now on, when I go to games, I plan on wearing all my Sox gear and cheering for the opposing team. Just to show my disgust. Ugh. And now we want to trade a fan favorite, a 28 year old stud pitcher who is willing to play for less than market value for a bunch of prospects. And yeah, blah blah blah, we need some prospects. Our farm sytstem blows. Well guess what Kenny? You've held the GM job long enough to shoulder the blame for a piss poor minor league. Trading Buerhle doesn't change your inability to scout and draft.

It's like I said when KW
had his 'golf cart throwdown' with Sisco in spring training. He's a 6 ERA pitcher from KC!! What the hell did KW expect?!?!?!?

It's good to see the scales fall
from the eyes of the non-believers.  This just points out how much of a gap we have between us and our competition.  (Gap?  How about chasm?)

If you listen to tubesox, though, we're the Marlins next year, circa 1998.  I'm not sure I want to let everyone walk and have Terrerro/Gonzales/Wiki et.al. starting every day.  I love the Sox and baseball, in that order, but Jesus it'd be hard to watch or care.

Well, sort of like now.

I still want Ichiro!  Though he'd be punching himself in the groin, not face, if he had to play here.

In less than two seasons...
...the sox have gone from a destination team for FA's to a 'why bother?' team. This franchise could have capitalized on the '05 success, but KW thought it best to discard Rowand and pick up junk like Sico, McD, Aardsma etc.  I think he should be axed.  'Moneyball' made a case for how stupid and naive KW really is and despite '05, I tend to agree.

by RoyEgan on Jul 7, 2007 7:56 AM CDT   0 recs

Wasn't it only 12 months ago
The Sox were rumored to be a destination for Griffey Jr.?  Gee, he would have been a nice mainstay in the OF, wouldn't he?  I don't care if he's oft-injured - I would have much rather have had an oft-injured lock for the HOF with HR power playing even corner OF than to have signed a couple of useless retreads (Pods, Erstad)  whose values were based on one good season.

You're right though.  Looking forward, we're not getting any FA here next year unless they're on the downside of their career, and then KW will still wind up having to pay above market value just to convince them to show up.

So depressing.

good luck with that one
Reinsdorf is loyal to people who should go, just like President Clueless. Remember how long it took him to axe that tub o' lard Krause?

My commentary on yesterday.
IMO, Guillen has totally emasculated this team against the Twins. Piranha and Santana worship is just the tip of the iceberg. Guillen worships this team! He's reaping what he has sown, plain and simple. 0 - 5 in last 5 vs. Twins, each loss very ugly in its own right. And the Memorial Day game was where this nightmarish season really started spiralling down.

by ballyb on Jul 7, 2007 8:01 AM CDT   0 recs

I'm sick and tired of Ozzie's twins talk
and he did it again

[merkin]

"I should change the name for those guys now," said Guillen of the Twins. "Those guys were piranhas the last time we see them. Now, they are like sharks. The way they swing the bat today, they are nothing like piranhas. Now, they have to be a bigger fish."

effing moron...

Reinsdorf
My suggestion is you is to dump your general manager, the whole team, your minor league system, finish last for five years, hire Dave Dombrowski, and in two years be a world champion again.

by BIG KLU on Jul 7, 2007 8:01 AM CDT   0 recs

Sox wanted Greene and Linebrink for Dye...
Link:
Before the Padres acquired Bradley, they asked the White Sox about outfielder Jermaine Dye and were told the price would be shortstop Khalil Greene and reliever Scott Linebrink. End of discussion.

by SSH2005 on Jul 7, 2007 10:58 AM CDT   0 recs

Wow
Greene and Linebrink.  San Diego would've been crazy to give that much up for Dye.  I would've been happy with Linebrink for Dye straight up.

This shows they are not serious
about starting over, IMO.  KW sounds like a fantasy owner who overestimates his players' value and thinks his adversary is a moron.  What a horseshit offer.

by winningugly on Jul 7, 2007 2:11 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

lol
ever heard of starting high. you know, anchoring expectations? would you rather he asks for a few bags of sunflower seeds?
Yeaaah. I'm gonna need you to go ahead and provide me with an official press release on that. OK? Great.

by larry on Jul 7, 2007 2:16 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think it shows
We have little of value to other teams. Otherwise they would have countered instead of walking away.
Sadly - because of free agency I think we only have about 5 MLB players that can bring anything back: Konerko, Jenks, AJ, Garland, Vasquez. Because the rest are "rent a player", or have hurt their own trade return (Contreras/JD) even if they are traded, I doubt we would get much in return.

by Brush Back on Jul 7, 2007 2:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

who says they didn't counter?
at any rate, to throw out a negotiating term, they didn't even have to - they had a BATNA of milton bradley to fall back on. a deal wasn't going to get done there.
Yeaaah. I'm gonna need you to go ahead and provide me with an official press release on that. OK? Great.

by larry on Jul 7, 2007 3:14 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Exactly my point
Why counter with anything - they were able to replace without hurting themself.
White Sox baseball, the kids are still learning to play

by Brush Back on Jul 7, 2007 3:26 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

well
we could get andrew brown (or his substantial equivalent) from the padres now or from someone else at any point in the future. my point is that, unlike the As who had DFAed bradley, we also have a BATNA of waiting to see if we can get something better. there was no harm in asking for a lot.
Yeaaah. I'm gonna need you to go ahead and provide me with an official press release on that. OK? Great.

by larry on Jul 7, 2007 3:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

OK, Mr. Obvious,
yeah, a bag of sunflower seeds would be the ticket.  If that's how you start your negotiations I'd walk away, too.  If you are serious, you make a marginally serious offer, not a bullshit offer.

But I'm sure you are the only person on this site who has ever negotiated, so we'll let you tell us how it's done.

by winningugly on Jul 7, 2007 9:11 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

i think you need to keep in mind
that this is a pretty tight group of guys we're talking about. yeah, if you sat down with someone you didn't know and threw that out, you might really piss them off. these guys talk pretty regularly. not one of them is going to walk away.

and, of course, i question any account of anything i hear in the media.

Yeaaah. I'm gonna need you to go ahead and provide me with an official press release on that. OK? Great.

Oh Boy
Well, as if it wasn't clear enough, after this dreadful double loss, the season is over, done, toe tag it.

I got great seats in the scout section for a game in september as a gift, was hoping the game might actually mean something.

At this point, the sox might play spoiler to another teams run, that's it.

What a load of crap this team has turned into in such a short time.

New ad campaign, "White Sox baseball, it Sux to be a Sox fan!"

White Sox fan since the mid 70's.
