Brian McBride disclocated his knee cap
For Fulham today.  He gets the skipper position, and then scores a goal today, and jacks his knee.  He will be out for a while with this.

Celtic plays tomorrow.

Yikes
I have a soft spot for Fulham because of the Americans on the team.  That's too bad about McBride.

weigh in on picking a team?
I've kind of just gravitated to Arsenal just because I loved watching Henry play (shame he left), but really, since we're so removed from the situation, how exactly are we supposed to pick a team?

by colintj on Aug 18, 2007 9:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Picking a team
This is my first season really following soccer.  I'm not an MLS fan -- I don't feel like watching a league that isn't even considered in the top three in the world -- but have sort of latched onto the EPL.

As far as picking a team, I know it's kind of "unfair" or "bandwagonish" to just hop on to one of the Big Fours', but in the end that's what I felt most comfortable doing.  Gerrard is an amazing player, absolutely love watching him, so that's probably the reason why I've latched onto the Reds.  The Fernando Torres signing was probably the cherry on top that clinched it.

It's odd...  I haven't even followed them all that long, but I found myself more excited over Gerrard's magnificent set piece against Aston Villa than anything with the White Sox this season (save Buehrle's no hitter).

I want to be able to follow Liverpool enough so that I have a blood-thirsty hatred for everything Chelsea and Man U.  If Thierry Henry stayed with Arsenal, I might've latched onto them -- Van Persie, Hleb (sp?) and Fabregas are all young (Hleb being the oldest in his mid-20s) and exciting footballers.

by CWSKeith on Aug 18, 2007 9:42 PM CDT up reply actions

L'pool was definitely the other option.
You just have to like Gerrard, plus the attitude.  And supposedly the Pudlians have toned down their crazy fan act from the 80's, so that's good.

Also, where do you read up and such on the players? I love watching "proper football" but I don't have a source of info or blog or something to keep up.

by colintj on Aug 18, 2007 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

English Football blogs
The main one I've started going to is The Offside.  The guy who runs the site is very friendly, I basically sent him an email asking him how I could get "more involved" in English League soccer and he gave me a bunch of different links.

My Liverpool oriented blog is Being Sven.  I'm sure there are more but I like what both of those two sites provide for me.

Nah
Those are the only two I really visit.  Occasionally I'll type something like "Liverpool FC Forum" into google and just check random things, but the above two are the only ones I have bookmarked.

called Erstad "a scrappy little guy."

It's either 6-2, 210 is the new little, or they've confused him with David Eckstein all along.  Angels with the same initials and all that.

Nice single, at least.

Fundamentals are so bad on this team
Puss armed outfielders showing off their lack of arm strength by constantly throwing rainbows to the plate.  Allowing for larger innings by having the trailers advance into scoring position.

Pitchers who think the are fans instead of backing up home.

Overweight shortstops who decided to give some bad flailing jump on a soft line drive, instead of recognizing the ball, and moving back a foot or so to make the play.

Our third baseman who seemed to have went through our minor league organization without learning how to charge the ball.

I'm starting to think
That resigning Buehrle was a mistake, let alone Dye. The Sox just don't have significant talent anywhere in the organization -- especially any younger than 30. Bringing back the 2006 team in 2008 but with some rookie pitchers is a foolish plan. I hope it's not Williams plan.

by hitlesswonder on Aug 19, 2007 12:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Owens better not be on this team next year
.244 .288 .287 .575

End of story.

I'm also prejudiced against white punters from North Dakota, and Polish left fielders from Texas.  And noodle armed switch hitters from Puerto Rico.  And fat shortstops from the Dominican Republic.  And plump catchers who can't hit or catch.

Some good news last night - Erstad's 2 for 3 lifted up into positive VORP numbers for the first time this year:

Darin Erstad 0.1
Luis Terrero -0.3
Scott Podsednik -1.6
Danny Richar -2.7
Angel Gonzalez -5.3
Toby Hall -5.7
Jerry Owens -7.6
Juan Uribe -8.3
Alex Cintron -10.1

We currently have 13 position players on the active roster (did anyone notice Terrero's on the DL?  If a tree falls in the forest...)  7 of the 13 have negative VORPs.  I make it 8, Erstad will be negative after his 0 for 4 today.  Lovely.

KW needs to do something more than give pep talks in the locker room.

But seriously, I always love speed.

by ChicagoPete on Aug 19, 2007 6:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Owens
It's actually worse.  Those stats don't include his 0-fer from last night.  At the start of play today, Hawk's favorite outfielder not named Erstad is hitting:

.239/.283/.282

Oh, and since the All-Star break, when he's really "turned it on":

.246/.293/.297

Pathetic.

by JRIG on Aug 19, 2007 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep
My first thought when I heard the signing (Dye) was that's a lot of money on a player that no one wanted to trade for. (Willy Mo and a sub-sntd minor appears to have been the only offer). I like Dye, glad he will be here, but worry the Sox have tied up additional payroll that they may need. Sadly, I think the replacement options KW has are pretty weak. And with the team in the state they are - are they counting on continued strong season and pre-season tickets sales after this season? Unless KW can move the Count and Garland - it just seems as though the financial room for making deals will be pretty limited.

by Brush Back on Aug 19, 2007 9:21 AM CDT up reply actions

i guess we know why tim raines was let go
DL: You were an ideal leadoff hitter because you combined an ability to get on base with outstanding speed. Of those two qualities, which do you feel is more important for a leadoff guy?

TR: OBP. I'd rather have someone who can get on, because you can't steal bases if you don't get on base. It's all about getting opportunities, and every time you get on base you're giving your team an opportunity to score. You still see a few teams putting their fastest guys on top, but more of them are using one of their better hitters, someone with a good on-base percentage, in the leadoff position. The key in baseball is getting on base to score runs. It's nice if you can get on and make things happen--that's valuable, too--but you also have guys coming up behind you who can drive you in, guys who can hit it out of the ballpark.

i recommed the full interview.

some good repartee from BA and KW
After being sent down to the Minors, the 25-year-old also didn't understand how Luis Terrero was called up to play the same role after Anderson beat him out in Spring Training. With no disrespect to Terrero, Anderson called the move "a low blow."

KW replies:

"I've explained that situation to him personally on a number of occasions," said Williams, responding to Anderson's comments. "If he doesn't get it by now, maybe I'll have to put it in a form letter to him so he can re-read it over and over.

Its clear that BA wont be playing CF for the Sox
and it has been since Ozzie gave it to the gimp Erstad. Now Jerry takes hold of both the CF and lead-off position(haha). At least Terrero could get on base. I just hope he gets traded in the off-season so can get a chance somewhere else.
