Ozzie Guillen is a Looney Tune
Some of my favorite cartoons of all-time are the old Looney Tunes Wile E. Coyote/Road Runner cartoons. In particular, I loved the one in which the Coyote finally caught the Road Runner only to discover, after chasing him through a series of elaborate tubes, that the Road Runner was now extremely large while the Coyote was miniaturized. Coyote famously held up a sign that read, "All right, wise guys, you always wanted me to catch him -- now what do I do?"
That about sums up my feelings about Ozzie Guillen's handling of the 9th inning Tuesday night.
In his three years in Chicago, Guillen has routinely expressed a desire to have more speed on his club. Midway through the contest with the Indians, substitute announcer Steve Stone commented that the current lineup was the speediest Guillen has been able to field this season, perhaps in his entire tenure. That speed produced an easy run in the first inning when Jerry Owens led off with a single, stole first on the first pitch to Josh Fields, was moved over by a Fields' groundout, and scored on a Paul Konerko Sac-Fly. Free run.
The Sox followed their second (and final) hit of the night in almost exactly the same fashion. With one out in the 5th, Scott Podsenik singled and stole second on the next pitch, but was unable to score after Juan Uribe and Danny Richar made routine outs.
Fast forward to the 9th, because the Sox sure did. The Sox have had 3 base runners all game, one since the first inning. Jerry Owens is leading off yet again. Owens was called out on strikes, but was able to reach first when the defensively challenged Victor Martinez let "strike three" get by him. So what happens on the first pitch to Josh Fields? A bunt!
That's right. He was bunting! With Victor Martinez behind the plate! On a night when the Sox had two first-pitch, no-doubt stolen bases!
I didn't listen to the post game, so I'm not 100% sure the bunt was a Guillen call. It could very well have been a dumb rookie (Fields) not knowing the situation. But I have a feeling it was Ozzie not fully trusting the two rookies; Fields for his ability to get the runner over, and Owens for his ability to steal against one of the worst catchers in baseball. And if that's the case, Fields shouldn't be hitting #2 and Owens doesn't provide the Sox with anything of value.
It's a good thing the Sox have been out of the race for a solid 2 months, otherwise this might have been a meltdown of a post.
The poor offensive performance wasted a great outing by John Danks, whose changeup was the best we've seen from him all year. The 8 strikeouts were a career high, 7 of which were swinging at changeups.
The last two games by Danks and Gavin Floyd give the Sox some real hope for future should they be able to unload the fossilizing Jose Contreras.

couldn't have been a dumb rookie mistake

Yeah, no wins in 12 starts
Keehrist.
that recap made me
At some point this season became ridiculous.
I can't say for sure what moment it was exactly, maybe the bullpen meltdown early on, maybe the grinderstad saga, maybe the iguchi for dubee trade, maybe trying to use jenks for 2 innings, who knows, but this one sure sealed the deal.
The horror, the horror, now it just makes me laugh.

Watch that copyright stuff!
What makes the move even -more- dumb
a) can't hold baserunners
b) sucks, therefore no outs should be wasted against him for any reason
This really was a bone-headed move
You know what would have been nice?
What hurts is that the team was finally playing better, and you were handed a golden opportunity to steal another well-played game and build a little momentum.
I'll add my incredulity
The morons around me applauded the sac bunt, and while having a runner at 2nd with one out is better than having a CS, how does Ozzie not attempt the steal with his best base runner, and then bunt him to 3rd?
I was mystified by the play call, and there's no way Fields was bunting on his own. Ozzie wants speed, and yet when he's presented the perfect opportunity to utilize it, he wimps out.
Ozzie has done some curiously strange things this season, the Hinske shift being the weirdest. His mentor Bobby Cox would be shaking his head.

And it's not like we are in contention...
Dump Pods remaining salary on the Cubs...
Pena has reportedly cleared waivers, which means Boston is free to deal him to any team. "I want to be traded," Pena said. "I want to play. They know I want to play. I'm surprised I wasn't traded before the deadline. They want me to perform, but how can I perform when I have just a couple of at-bats, then they take me out, and I don't play again for days? They said I would be given a chance to play, but it hasn't happened."

Podsednik to Cubs?
oh, what a denial
I think Kenny is trying to dump Podsednik...

True, but Murton is still good enough...
Matt Murton (Career vs. RHP)

Matt Murton (Career vs. LHP)
296 PA / .313 AVG / .389 OBP / .473 SLG / .862 OPS
I don't see anything wrong with a .777 OPS against RHP from LF considering we have had Podsednik out there since Carlos Lee.

With that said, Owens should STILL be running in that situation.
Part of that 30 percent...
Bad comparison
Your numbers are different from mine
Normally I'd link, but it keeps screwing up for some reason.
And even still, I don't know how he managed that, since he's always looked bad this year against us.
Owens should have ran b/c:
b) He should have been out anyways, so I think you can be a little more risky with that baserunner.
c) Why not? With the current record it's not worth playing it safe.
d) Future. If they truly believe Owens is a possible future Leadoff man, then this is a great situation for him. It's also a good situation for Fields.

Shouldn't that be "stole second?"
Ozzie is a Looney, but...

Arthur: You're a looney!
- Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The point is...
If Owens gets into scoring position with his one talent (speed), we have an extra out to knock him in and tie the game. For all Ozzie's talk about speed and stolen bases, why does he puss out on a perfect straight steal opportunity. Our awful record this season makes this call by Ozzie even more retarded.
Steve Stone
No question
Hawk actually seemed a little nervous with Stoney in the booth and obviously didn't know how to handle a partner that a) wasn't constantly agreeing with him and kissing his ass and b) actually made points Hawk would be expected to respond to. But, as others mentioned, Stoney did force Hawk to raise his game a little.
If Hawk were reduced to exclusively play-by-play, nicknaming, catchphrases, and the occasional (not constant) trip down memory lane and Stoney provided all the analysis, I'd be delighted. Guess I'll just have to savor the next 5 days.
I predict Steve Stone is found in a

Marlins DFA Joe Borchard...
A former first-round pick of the White Sox who received a massive bonus to pass up a potential football career, Borchard has been a huge bust as a pro. He batted just .196 in 179 at-bats this season, giving him a .205 batting average and 636 OPS in 301 career games.
Say it ain't so, Joe.
I bet he wishes he had played football

The Angels are going to have to make some huge concessions, if they don't clean up their concessions.
Orange County health officials are planning to increase enforcement at Angels Stadium, where they've found 118 vermin violations at stadium kiosks and restaurants over the last 2½ years.
Included were 33 major violations, in which ''rodent activity'' was observed by inspectors in a ''critical area'' of 18 stadium food venues, the Orange County Register reported Sunday.
''We realize we have an issue at Angels Stadium,'' said Richard Sanchez, the agency's director of environmental health. ''We're stepping up enforcement.''
For comparison, San Diego's Petco Park had two vermin violations, and Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles had seven, the Register reported.

Food Service Issues
Jose demotion soon to be over it seems.
Asked if Floyd deserved a second consecutive start, Guillen seemed to almost downplay Floyd's performance against the Tigers on Sunday.
''One game don't mean anything,'' Guillen said. ''That's the first good game he's pitched any time I've seen him, to be honest with you. He will be out there because he threw the ball well. I think it's not fair for us or the team to see what we have for the future. It's just one outing or two outings. We're going to give him another shot to go out there. But remember, if this kid fails, I don't think we should take him out because he would just fail for one day. It's a tough situation to deal with, but I think we're going to deal with the best we have.''
Another option being weighed is skipping John Danks' next start, after the left-hander pitched on Tuesday. The rookie's innings are piling up this year, and it might be time for Guillen to give him a break.
''We're not going to kick Josie on the butt and say that's the way we're going to do it,'' Guillen said. ''I'm not the type of guy who deals with it that way. But I promised Josie he will be starting one of the games. And I'm a man, when he says something, I'm going to do it. With Jose out there, we're going to see how he's going to do it, but he has to do it.'

Now there...
Mike Sirotka - never threw another pitch in a real game.
Jim Parque - made a total of eighteen appearances over the next three years, was awful in almost all of them.
James Baldwin - was dealt away the next year for a handful of crap, and didn't do anything of note.
Interestingly, Cal Eldred, the oldest and most injured of the bunch (remember the screw holding his arm together?) was the one who had the most post-2000 success, putting together two good seasons as a middle reliever for the Cards.
I just find it interesting that all four starters were good in 2000, and none of them had any success as a starter afterwards.

Y2K wasn't about technology
Scary. 2000 is the year I was married. And the all-time high (until this year) of the stock market. And the all-time high of the dollar vs. euro.
So they are not alone - peaking as they (we?) did.
Fortunately, the wife is much better than the markets or currency.
Awwwwwww.
