garland to the rockies?
Troy E. Renck:
The Rockies have told multiple agents they will be looking to add at least one veteran starter next season, likely coupling him with Jeff Francis, Aaron Cook, Ubaldo Jimenez and Jason Hirsh. Franklin Morales will probably require more Triple-A seasoning, and Josh Fogg, who's been nails for this team down the stretch, might be deemed too expensive for the role.

That's where the White Sox come in.

Given their collapse, it's becoming more likely that they will try to tweak their roster and revamp their bullpen this offseason. That's led to talk that general manager Kenny Williams will shop starter Jon Garland. Colorado pursued Garland in July, but found the asking price prohibitive. Williams will likely be looking for multiple relievers.

A potential starting point to serious discussions: former closer Brian Fuentes for Garland. Fuentes is a two-time all-star who absolutely mauls left-handed hitters. He's in line to double his $3.5 million salary in his final year of arbitration, a figure that could prove difficult to justify if he remains a setup man for Manny Corpas.

btw, here's the mlbtraderumors.com entry

Colorado
I don't really see a match there.  The one guy I might be interested in is Ian Stewart, and even he has his issues.  He hit .304/.379/.478 this year, but that was hitting in Colorado Springs in the PCL.  Those numbers are hardly spectacular.

In trading Garland, the Sox should be looking for a trade along the lines of what they got for Freddy Garcia, except instead of Floyd, get something a little more useful.  I'm not saying the Sox should be aiming at getting more pitching prospects -- since I doubt Hu is going anywhere, I got my eye on Lillibridge in Atlanta.  I would probably trade Garland for Lillibridge and an additional piece.

I don't like Colorado either
Still think Seattle makes good sense for both clubs

by 3E8 on Sep 9, 2007 8:03 PM CDT up reply actions

you want a better package for garland
than we got for garcia? ratchet down those expectations some. we can look for that but jon isn't as good of a pitcher as freddy. the somewhat weak free agent market for pitchers may play in our favor some but i'd be pretty happy with a B prospect like lillibridge.
All that matters is the L.

by larry on Sep 9, 2007 8:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree...
Lillibridge and a C prospect would be great. I'd even just take Lillibridge. I think a deal like that should be possible -- Sickels said he thought Garland could fetch a B and 2 C's. And the free agent pitching crop is thin and involves signing a guy for multi-year deals. So, if Garland can end the season with 2 or 3 strong outings, I think moving him for a B prospect should be doable.

I just hope the Sox don't trade him for Fuentes...or any reliever, really.

Hunter - I hope not
Was at 2 of the 3 games, Hunter's defense is not what it was. And def not worth 14m or more a year. He seems to have lost a couple steps from what it used to be. Perhaps its from this season and the fact they are not playing for anything - or perhaps its from geting older and playing on an artificial surface.

Also - Josh's crash into the wall was awesome. You could hear him smash of the wall extremely clearly. (unlike my sentence structure)

Which is more painful to watch...
the Sox offense or the Bears offense?  Grossman just ain't getting it done, he's clueless.

I may need something stronger than drink
Grossman isn't improving, he's getting worse.  Bears don't need a QB who can heave bombs against shitty teams with no pass rush.  Grossman is useless against a good defense.  A savvy guy who can move the chains like Griese is a much better complement to our defense, it was a shame to lose this game.

I wouldn't say that
We fought toe-to-toe with a team that went 14-2 (?) in the AFC last year.  Grossman's turnover didn't even hurt the Bears nearly as much as the Benson fumble, AP's fumble and the unlucky bounce off McGowan.

You may be right about Griese, although I don't think he does a whole heckuva lot more than Rex.  I'd love to see some more creativity from our offensive coordinator.  The weapons are there -- we have a solid tight-end duo in Clark and Olsen, a solid if unspectacular wide receiver core and (in my mind) a decent running back duo.  There's also Hester who was supposed to be used a bit more -- I don't understand why they don't try to stretch the field with Devin in the slot.

Grossman didnt light the world on fire
But you can put this one on Benson and company putting the ball on the deck.

by southsideirish71 on Sep 9, 2007 8:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Wasn't just the fumble
Benson also got stuffed on the fourth and one, that's as good as a turnover.

I tend to think...
Turner is more of a problem than Grossman.  Why do they have to be so allergic to the shotgun on third down?  Grossman seems so much more comfortable when he's allowed to look over the defense and not worry about the snap/the three/five step drop.

Turner's playcalling is terribly uncreative, too.  I don't think Benson ran the ball once today when he wasn't in the i-formation.

by CWSKeith on Sep 9, 2007 7:16 PM CDT reply actions

Blame the player, not the game...
You make a reasonable point, but I think you are wrong.

It is likely that the Bears' coaches do not implement the 3/5 drop b/c their QB has not demonstrated the ability to execute the play.

Grossman isn't "bad" b/c he fumbles a snap or throws an interception; no, he sucks b/c he is too stupid to do it.

It sounds to simple, but ..

It will be another year
of the defense carrying the team, with Rex's rating all over the board. He'll look great one game and pathetic the next...he's "The Bi-Polar Quarterback." He'll be just good enough to keep his job a long time.

And, they better find a "go to" running back quick. Benson runs straight ahead...and not very well. He's not showing a lot of "instinctual" running ability as of yet.
