Ozzie Guillen Scouting Bartolo Colon
Ozzie is scouting Bartolo Colon:
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen has traveled to the Dominican Republic to see Colon pitch in the Dominican winter league. Guillen says he wanted to see if Colon was healthy because -- if so -- he could be "an important part of the team for the White Sox."
- Jim looks at Charlie Haeger, and Jay says the Sox need another starter.
- Hot Stove: Teams linked to Mike Cameron: A's, Yankee$, Brewers. Seems he signed a 1-year deal with the Brewers.
- Carl's latest strip: There's No Place Like Tucson.

I'm no longer on the Colon bandwagon
Truth be told, since ZiPS came out, I've become much more interested in Egbert. I know this is old news, but I think the biggest thing is ZiPS saying his bump in K-rate from last season is for real -- 101 Ks in 164 innings would rate second among Sox starters, only behind Javier Vazquez. And since he's about the only one of our real prospect pitchers (Poreda can't be traded, unless as a PTBNL) who hasn't been traded this winter, I'd imagine that says something about how much the Sox think of him (well, that, or he really is a 'scouts vs stats' player in that the projection systems like him but scouts think his stuff will only get him so far, although maybe those two aren't mutually exclusive).
Bleh -- that was a mouthful.

maybe on monday, A's got Emil Brown
Mychael Urban's sources say the Brown signing is linked to Oakland's likely Mark Kotsay trade, a deal that might be finalized on Monday.
Brown had a dreadful '07, slumping to .257/.300/.347 in 113 games. Before that, though, he posted a respectable .800+ OPS in 2005-06. The KC Star recently summed up Brown's Royals career, including the pellet gun incident.

i don't know what sites you follow
draws like that in the fa cup aren't really that uncommon. liverpool sent out a second-tier side who were half-interested against a side for whom the game meant everything. literally, in the case of luton, considering this cup run will likely save the club from bankruptcy. the luton players hadn't been paid in two months. the match paid their back wages and the next match will probably ensure their wages for the rest of the season are paid. it wasn't a great result but luton will be put to the sword at anfield.

Cameron is probably good for .260 avg .320 obp. Owens would probably do that on a bad year and will probably do better than that, if he's played full time. Plus he's younger, cheaper, and isn't a user.

'That old ballplayer is worth production!' KW needs to start leaving these beat up old cars on the side of the road. As already noted, the Sox have an abundance of pitchers who can give the same production of Colon (if not better). They're cheaper too, and with a far less risk of injury.

Rolen for Glaus Swap
by The Deacon on Jan 12, 2008 12:29 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Rolen for Glaus
Rolen's body can't handle Tony LaRussa in St. Louis.
Glaus has a little more power, Rolen has more talent (a fielding upgrade too).
Glaus has a roid history
Rolen has a personality (accute assholism) history.
Pretty straightforward trade just based on these factors.

For the jays, they get the better player, so it's a good deal for them. as for the injury concern, it's not like glaus was mr. iron man, so that's a non-issue to me.

by larry on Jan 13, 2008 5:12 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
to me it's pretty obvious who i'd rather have...
- (91 G) 113 OPS+
- (58 G) 140
- (149 G) 126
- (153 G) 122
- (115 G) 120
Rolen: (32 yo)
- (154 G) 138
- (142 G) 157
- (56 G) 84
- (142 G) 126
- (112 G) 89
Rolen had two awful years in 05 and 07, when he was very injured... but it appears to me Glaus is more consistent when he is healthy, although Rolen has been more healthy in the past 5 seasons, by 50 games. (10 games per year avg)
Then there is the contract issue.
Glaus will earn 12.5 in 2008 after which he has an option for 2009 at 11.25
Rolen is signed thru 2010 for 13.79 in 2008, 13.25 in 2009, 12.63 in 2010 and complete NTC.
Now, if the Cards sent money in the deal, as is suspected, it won't be so bad.
But I think even with the contracts aside, Glaus has the greater chance to produce than Rolen. Even despite the steroids rumors.

Reposted from BTF
That's an absolutely terrible list (in more ways than one). How can Rogers seriously justify putting Broadway over Egbert -- one major league start? It's not like Broadway is a 'good stuff' guy who is having control issues -- his stuff is mediocre as have been his results. And John Shelby at eight? Shelby is arguably the highest ceiling prospect (in the Sox system -- obviously) at or above single-A and just came off a .322/.351/.572 second half -- that should be good for much better than 8th in such a useless farm system.
Not that it really matters, but my top five (since 6-10 is basically a useless exercise) would be:
- Jack Egbert -- Probably not a very high ceiling, but ZiPS says he can be an above average starter this season. He gets groundballs (lots of 'em), has good control and this year was amongst the league leaders in strikeouts (which ZiPS sees as being 'for real' -- he projects to have the second best K-rate among Sox starters, although that might not be saying a lot).
- John Shelby -- Decent combination of ceiling and production, highlighted above.
- Jose Martinez -- Mainly here because of 'projectability' (I think that's a fair word to use here) -- he's got a great frame but hasn't even seen low-A yet.
- Aaron Poreda -- I have him here mainly due to draft position (and because the Sox system is crap). CBW absolutely hates his arm slot and apparently some scouts were fired over the decision to take Poreda. Hopefully he can stay healthy for another six months so Kenny can deal him for a reliever. If they do end up keeping him I'd hope they try to turn him into Matt Thorton version 2006 -- he's got a dynamite fastball but that's about it.
- Lance Broadway -- I'll admit I'm kind of picking a name out of a hate here. Broadway isn't that great, but he did look pretty good in his one start at the major league level, and perhaps his below average production at AAA can be explained by his use of a new pitch (two-seamer) for a good part of the season. Another (relatively) low-ceiling pitcher.
by CWSKeith on Jan 14, 2008 11:46 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
no scouts were fired over the decision
that guy at soxtalk is cute but let's actually use our heads and apply some common sense to what he asserts - just like we would with what anyone else asserts.
at any rate, you list makes a hell of a lot more sense than rogers'. and, yes, 6-10 are pretty much useless (though i think throwing haeger into your mix makes sense). any list that includes silveiro is a big stretch. the fact that rogers doesn't include him on his 2011 projected roster tells you everything you need to know about the depth the sox don't have right now.
