Ozzie Guillen Scouting Bartolo Colon

Ozzie is scouting Bartolo Colon:

Free-agent ace Bartolo Colon could be making a return to Chicago.

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen has traveled to the Dominican Republic to see Colon pitch in the Dominican winter league. Guillen says he wanted to see if Colon was healthy because -- if so -- he could be "an important part of the team for the White Sox."

Rotoworld gives us Colon's line: 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 K, 0 BB. Buster Olney says "the Mets backed off after taking a closer look at the condition of his right arm."

whitesox.com announces the spring training invitees:
The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on minor-league contracts with infielders Brad Eldred, Royce Huffman, Jeff Liefer and Michael Rouse, catchers Paul Phillips and Ryan Smith, infielder/outfielder Jason Bourgeois, outfielder Miguel Negron and right-handed pitcher D.J. Carrasco. All nine players, in addition to infielder Chris Getz, have received non-roster invites to the club's spring training camp in Tucson, Ariz.
Speaking of Spring Training, Robin Ventura will also be in Tucson. Pablo too.

Colon
maybe that could become a Dotel type move where you sign Colon to a deal, let him pitch and gain some value while danks works on his stuff in AAA, and then trade Colon at the deadline to a playoff team needing more pitching, and bringing up danks for a half a year?

C'mon Mr. Pessimism
How do you know he was not sitting with a scout for the white sox? This organization won the series not too long ago, what's with all the bashing?? Are your lives so uninteresting and wretched, that you dedicate your life to finding fault to the only thing that loves you back?

ran across this
an old MLBTR article on the white sox trade possibilities, phil rogers suggested Quentin back in July....
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2007/07/conor-jackson-s.html
look at PECOTA's projected for Quentin for 2008 then, i wonder how its changed since then.

I was about to give Rogers some credit...
but then read the article. He mentions Quentin as being shopped in what is essentially a footnote to his main point in the article. Zero prescience on Rogers' part.

By the way, I think Rogers is a doofus (or dufus, whichever you prefer).

And I will scout out the Tucson facility and see if the karma is proper for ST this year - headed there on Sunday.  Will try and get drunk with Hawk and Walk and NOT get kicked out within 24 hours of arrival.

I don't know why we would want Colon
We've already got a bunch of below to average starters, unless you're concerned for Danks.  But he would have been ready this year anyway, so I'm not sure what's so horrible about him getting the call.  Besides, Egbert is waiting in line.  So unless they really feel like they need another walking casualty on the team (is that a position like leadoff hitter?), I don't get it.

Maybe Kenny thinks Cooper is a doctor and can reattach his arm?

This just all baffles me...really does.  Hopefully this is all just hearsay and not true.

I'm no longer on the Colon bandwagon
as colin correctly points out (and as larry probably pointed out a couple of months ago), we have a bunch of average-ish (I'm stretching the definition of average here a bit) starters, which is what Colon figures to be.

Truth be told, since ZiPS came out, I've become much more interested in Egbert.  I know this is old news, but I think the biggest thing is ZiPS saying his bump in K-rate from last season is for real -- 101 Ks in 164 innings would rate second among Sox starters, only behind Javier Vazquez.  And since he's about the only one of our real prospect pitchers (Poreda can't be traded, unless as a PTBNL) who hasn't been traded this winter, I'd imagine that says something about how much the Sox think of him (well, that, or he really is a 'scouts vs stats' player in that the projection systems like him but scouts think his stuff will only get him so far, although maybe those two aren't mutually exclusive).

Bleh -- that was a mouthful.

by CWSKeith on Jan 11, 2008 2:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

glad to see you've come around
i thought it was interesting that egbert was supposedly the sox scouts' #2 pitching prospect. what that translates to into the reality of a KW/guillen run team remains to be seen but it just made me that much more comfortable in going into ST without a FA starter. we still have an excess of pitching (especially pitching without options) so it will be interesting to see how things shake out over the next three months with that. i would hope, however, that such considerations wouldn't completely foreclose there being an "open" competition for starting roles between danks, floyd, egbert, broadway, haeger, and whoever else wants to get in on that. i think danks and floyd (and maybe broadway) should be given an edge in it because of their major league experience - not to mention that egbert hasn't been to AAA, either - but if egbert does real well and one of those does piss poor...

Thome - Ribs, Back, Elbow
Konerko - Degenerative Hips
Uribe - Ulcers and Food Poisoning
Crede - Back
Contreras - Geriatric
Pods - Groin
Erstad - Ankle, Back
Dye - Quad

What the heck is Chicago Tough?  Now we might add Colon who's arm is in worse shape than Charles Nagy's before he retired??

re
[J-S]:
After serving a 25-game suspension at the start of the season for testing positive for a banned stimulant last year, Cameron will take over in center field for the Brewers. Bill Hall will move from center to third base, with Ryan Braun shifting from third to left.

what a good signing.
team option for '09? single year deal?  how would this have not worked for us?  what are the odds he's at least a B type center fielder?  pretty decent right?  good production, another draft pick...what's the downside again?  we even have a backup in swisher who would be seriously productive for 25 games.  and we'd probably go from shitty OF defense to good OF defense too.

and I think we could have easily gotten Quentin his ABs because our corners and DH are so old and should be taking the rest anyway.

Mark Kotsay to the Braves for a prospect?
"Braves, A's discuss deal for Kotsay
Possible move to Atlanta 'does excite' veteran centerfielder"
Athletics general manager Billy Beane called Kotsay Friday morning and told him they were discussing a trade to send the 32-year-old center fielder to Atlanta for a prospect. The A's would likely also pay a significant portion of Kotsay's $8 million salary in 2008.

maybe on monday, A's got Emil Brown
[MLBTR]:
The A's signed 33 year-old outfielder Emil Brown to a one-year deal today.  Terms are not yet known; Brown made $3.45MM in 2007.

Mychael Urban's sources say the Brown signing is linked to Oakland's likely Mark Kotsay trade, a deal that might be finalized on Monday.

Brown had a dreadful '07, slumping to .257/.300/.347 in 113 games.  Before that, though, he posted a respectable .800+ OPS in 2005-06.  The KC Star recently summed up Brown's Royals career, including the pellet gun incident.

Cameron
Tom Haudricourt has the contract details.  Cameron gets a $1.25MM signing bonus and will make about $4.22MM in '08 (missed out on $780K due to his suspension).  The 2009 option is for $10MM, plus a $750K buyout.  As Haudricourt says, in a way it's a one-year, $6.22MM deal.  The signing isn't a precursor to a Bill Hall trade.

LFC appears to be in bad shape
I've been out of the loop the past two weeks, but man, worse than the tie versus Middlesbrough is the tie versus fucking Luton Town.  That's rather pathetic.  I'd Rafa's seat has to be getting mighty hot right about now.  Unfortunately, both of my 'go to' LFC blogs haven't been updated in better than two weeks, so I'm stuck relying on the official website for information, which is about as bad as relying on WhiteSox.com for Sox analysis/info.

On the other hand, at least Marquette stomped Notre Dame.  Gosh damn was that an enjoyable pounding...

i don't know what sites you follow
but i've always heard thisisanfield.com is good.

draws like that in the fa cup aren't really that uncommon. liverpool sent out a second-tier side who were half-interested against a side for whom the game meant everything. literally, in the case of luton, considering this cup run will likely save the club from bankruptcy. the luton players hadn't been paid in two months. the match paid their back wages and the next match will probably ensure their wages for the rest of the season are paid. it wasn't a great result but luton will be put to the sword at anfield.

Cameron over Owens (let the owens bashing begin).

Cameron is probably good for .260 avg .320 obp. Owens would probably do that on a bad year and will probably do better than that, if he's played full time. Plus he's younger, cheaper, and isn't a user.

It probably won't be a mistake
to sign him, but I wonder if they realize how much he resembles what happened with Erstad last year.

When did the Sox turn into
Victory Auto Wreckers?

'That old ballplayer is worth production!' KW needs to start leaving these beat up old cars on the side of the road. As already noted, the Sox have an abundance of pitchers who can give the same production of Colon (if not better). They're cheaper too, and with a far less risk of injury.

Rolen for Glaus
Glaus' body can't handle the artificial turf in Toronto.

Rolen's body can't handle Tony LaRussa in St. Louis.

Glaus has a little more power, Rolen has more talent (a fielding upgrade too).

Glaus has a roid history

Rolen has a personality (accute assholism) history.

Pretty straightforward trade just based on these factors.

How is Rolen's
body going to deal with the turf?

Is Glaus going to have to get used to alcohol,
not 'roids/HGH, as his drug of choice?

Cards
Great deal for St. Louis, if only to rid themselves of the Rolen/Larussa issue.

For the jays, they get the better player, so it's a good deal for them.  as for the injury concern, it's not like glaus was mr. iron man, so that's a non-issue to me.

by em3 on Jan 13, 2008 11:43 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

what makes you think
rolen is better than glaus?

by Jbasic89 on Jan 13, 2008 12:41 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

uhm, it's a steal for st. louis
it makes NO sense for the Jays to do this trade. None that I can see, at least.

maybe the jays know more about his steroid
use than has been released publicly. or maybe they think that a guy who has missed significant time in 3 or the last 5 seasons isn't going to hold up any longer on the turf. at any rate, it looks more like a here's my problem, i'll take yours trade. they're both likely to do the same thing over the next couple years.

by larry on Jan 13, 2008 5:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

to me it's pretty obvious who i'd rather have...
Glaus: (31 yo)
  1. (91 G) 113 OPS+
  2. (58 G) 140
  3. (149 G) 126
  4. (153 G) 122
  5. (115 G) 120
T = 556 Games

Rolen: (32 yo)

  1. (154 G) 138
  2. (142 G) 157
  3. (56 G) 84
  4. (142 G) 126
  5. (112 G) 89
T = 606 Games

Rolen had two awful years in 05 and 07, when he was very injured... but it appears to me Glaus is more consistent when he is healthy, although Rolen has been more healthy in the past 5 seasons, by 50 games. (10 games per year avg)

Then there is the contract issue.

Glaus will earn 12.5 in 2008 after which he has an option for 2009 at 11.25

Rolen is signed thru 2010 for 13.79 in 2008, 13.25 in 2009, 12.63 in 2010 and complete NTC.

Now, if the Cards sent money in the deal, as is suspected, it won't be so bad.

But I think even with the contracts aside, Glaus has the greater chance to produce than Rolen. Even despite the steroids rumors.

no, the jays send money ($1.8 mil) to the cards!

okay
let's make sure we have the facts straight. first, glaus has a full NTC. second, glaus' option is now guaranteed. third, yes, the jays are sending $1.8MM. but, fourth, the cardinals are sending $4MM.

and, since i know the question is coming, they're doing it this way because the money owed to rolen isn't due until 2010. it's creative accounting.

Headed to Tucson in the AM
to ask Walker how he continually turns good prospects/talent into crap, how Bainsey collects a paycheck, and how Kittle has been living off his rookie year for 25 years now.  Also hoping I don't get too embarassed in public.  I'll be reporting anything worth making sport of.

Have a great week, men.  Please challenge larry whenever it is warranted.

rumor-mongering
of a more legitimate nature.

"San Francisco would consider trading for White Sox third baseman Joe Crede if they don't re-sign Pedro Feliz, who is drawing interest from Philadelphia."

Feliz
I can't imagine any team giving serious consideration to Feliz.  Sure, the defense is great, but his lifetime OBP is .288!

SF (and Philly) should take a more serious look at guys like Crede and Inge for 3B.  Feliz is a disaster.

where to start with this one
getz over richar as the projected 2011 2b? swisher in center in 2011? JD still with the team? hell, PK still with the team? joe crede? i realize the sox don't have a lot of position players to point to but shelby seems like a sensible choice to at least put swisher at a position he's more capable at and get rid of at least one guy who will be a total geriatric. and orlando cabrera?

he has two players - yes, two (2) - who have not played for the big league club on that projected roster (not counting quentin, who has obviously played for AZ). there is no chance in hell that happens. why even bother printing this?

Reposted from BTF
Some more piling on Phil:

That's an absolutely terrible list (in more ways than one). How can Rogers seriously justify putting Broadway over Egbert -- one major league start? It's not like Broadway is a 'good stuff' guy who is having control issues -- his stuff is mediocre as have been his results. And John Shelby at eight? Shelby is arguably the highest ceiling prospect (in the Sox system -- obviously) at or above single-A and just came off a .322/.351/.572 second half -- that should be good for much better than 8th in such a useless farm system.

Not that it really matters, but my top five (since 6-10 is basically a useless exercise) would be:

  1. Jack Egbert -- Probably not a very high ceiling, but ZiPS says he can be an above average starter this season. He gets groundballs (lots of 'em), has good control and this year was amongst the league leaders in strikeouts (which ZiPS sees as being 'for real' -- he projects to have the second best K-rate among Sox starters, although that might not be saying a lot).
  2. John Shelby -- Decent combination of ceiling and production, highlighted above.
  3. Jose Martinez -- Mainly here because of 'projectability' (I think that's a fair word to use here) -- he's got a great frame but hasn't even seen low-A yet.
  4. Aaron Poreda -- I have him here mainly due to draft position (and because the Sox system is crap). CBW absolutely hates his arm slot and apparently some scouts were fired over the decision to take Poreda. Hopefully he can stay healthy for another six months so Kenny can deal him for a reliever. If they do end up keeping him I'd hope they try to turn him into Matt Thorton version 2006 -- he's got a dynamite fastball but that's about it.
  5. Lance Broadway -- I'll admit I'm kind of picking a name out of a hate here. Broadway isn't that great, but he did look pretty good in his one start at the major league level, and perhaps his below average production at AAA can be explained by his use of a new pitch (two-seamer) for a good part of the season. Another (relatively) low-ceiling pitcher.

by CWSKeith on Jan 14, 2008 11:46 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

no scouts were fired over the decision
to take poreda. that's ridiculous. no one gets fired for one pick - let alone one that was made about two months before they were let go and, obviously, no one knows what will actually happen with it. they were fired for everything that happened with the minor league system long before poreda arrived.

that guy at soxtalk is cute but let's actually use our heads and apply some common sense to what he asserts - just like we would with what anyone else asserts.

at any rate, you list makes a hell of a lot more sense than rogers'. and, yes, 6-10 are pretty much useless (though i think throwing haeger into your mix makes sense). any list that includes silveiro is a big stretch. the fact that rogers doesn't include him on his 2011 projected roster tells you everything you need to know about the depth the sox don't have right now.
