Oneli losing the closer's job in his Dominican Winter League team?

Say it ain't so 'Los Dedos':

Carlos Marmol is in the process of supplanting six-fingered White Sox prospect Oneli Perez as the closer for powerful Licey. Marmol took the first part of the winter off but is back on the mound in the Dominican Republic, where he has nine strikeouts, no walks and one hit allowed in his last 5 1/3 innings.

Maybe it was Oneli's blown save in Licey's January 4 postseason game. He allowed 3 runs in one-third of an inning in that game. Marmol pitched the last 1.2 innings in Licey's 3-2 win Saturday. Oneli didn't pitch in Saturday's game. UPDATE: Oneli picked up the save in Licey's 4-3 win Sunday.

Note: the links in the quote point to the regular season stats on MLB.com. The postseason in the DWL started on December 26. Licey's website has both postseason (PDF) (HTML old version) and regular season (PDF) (HTML) stats.

  • Larry gives us this rumor from BP's John Perrotto: "San Francisco would consider trading for White Sox third baseman Joe Crede if they don't re-sign Pedro Feliz, who is drawing interest from Philadelphia." Robothal says the Dodgers, Brewers and Phillies are interested in Feliz. The Brewers interest would be contingent on them trading Bill Hall.

Sickels Top 50 Hitters List
Seems pretty arbitrary.  I can't tell what he is basing these ratings on.  It certainly doesn't seem like stats weighed too heavily in this process.  Talk about subjective.  I really like the ChiSox part of the list.  I would argue that Josh Fields deserves better than to be #43 on this list, but if he does not, can someone seriously think that nobody that can be called a prospect in all of baseball fell somewhere between him and #44 Ryan Sweeney?  I mean, what the hell?  That is absurd.
Why don't you crack an egg of knowledge all over me, buddy.

cracking the egg of knowledge
by "2007 top 50 hitters in review" he means that was his list prior to the 2007 season. it wouldn't really make much sense to review something if you just created it, would it.

Re: Sickels' comment on Fields
43) Josh Fields, 3B-OF, Chicago White Sox
Hit .244/.308/.480 with 23 homers for the White Sox. Contact issues will impact his batting average but power will get stronger.

I added the bold, but I'm looking at this comment and thinking a bit -- does he mean that there's still some 'untapped' or 'undeveloped' power potential in his bat or is he just saying that because he's a young player who's had a successful rookie campaign, odds are that he's going to improve?

by CWSKeith on Jan 13, 2008 5:11 PM CST reply actions

power peaks
in, you guessed it, peak power years. fields isn't there yet. i would also note that his power increased in the second half - which suggests that he made a successful transition to the big leagues. so you can expect, even if he doesn't have anything else to tap, numbers that would more closely resemble the second half than the first couple months.

by larry on Jan 13, 2008 5:18 PM CST up reply actions

jeez
that'd be elite power then, wouldn't it?   He was 30th in ISO amongst those with 200 PA (25th for 400 PA) last year with  his .236.  In the neighborhood of ~.260 was 15th or so.
His little smile pissed me off.

by colintj on Jan 14, 2008 4:38 AM CST up reply actions

i think that's about right
he should have that or close to it. of course, that's about the only thing he will be elite in. it would be nice, though, if he could get a return of that speed he had in the minors. i'm sure it won't last through his career but it could be a nice complement to his game over the next few years.

by larry on Jan 14, 2008 9:06 AM CST up reply actions

i think
he still has that speed, i just dont think ozzie is going to try to utilize it.  I'm not sure how his instincts and reads on pitchers are though for stealing...

Supposedly he had some kind of leg
injury.  Don't ask me where I heard that, cuz I think it was here from Cheat, but if not who knows.  If that's the case, that might've even impacted his turn at the plate, depending on what sort of injury we're talking about here.  I don't really expect it though, since his K rate was pretty much what you would expect given his work in the minors.  BP rated him as bad as I've seen wrt K's on that graph thing they have on the PECOTA cards.  Might have impacted his fielding too, which would also be welcome considering how terrible he was.

And if he started stealing bases too, that would be a very nice addition to his game.  If he's not going to get on base often, he needs to make the best of the times he is on.

His little smile pissed me off.

by colintj on Jan 14, 2008 11:02 AM CST up reply actions

As opposed to stealing bases
I would prefer that he is just agressive on the base path, as in going 1st to 3rd on reasonable hits to RF, scoring from 2nd on singles to the outfield, and scoring of what should be sacrifice flys.

You know, the things that any "small-ball" managed team should be doing but that every "ozzie-ball" managed team doesn't do (possibly due to a roster of many slow and lumbering sluggers or possibly due to poor coaching).

Sorry, had to get it out.

Gotcha
84% success rate is good enough for the green light. If he's over the hammy pull, let him run!

I suppose the usual caveats apply here, as in was he stealing against vastly defensively inferior catchers in Charlotte with respect to the majors, etc. I understand that is splitting hairs on my part and asking a lot of questions I'm not confident any of us can answer with any certainty.

In defense of my stolen base statistic ignorance, though it may not be obvious, I was trying to extend the smart base running rant to the team as a whole despite replying to a post about a specific player.

My bad in not making that obvious.

on danks:

14) John Danks, LHP, Chicago White Sox
Went 6-13, 5.50 with 109/54 K/BB in 139 innings for the White Sox. Paid the price for being rushed. Should improve if he stays healthy and confident.

The Crede to the Giants rumor
whether it's true or not, obviously stems from Aaron Rowand signing with the Giants. Bruce Bochy doesn't use the word "grinder," but he's explicitly stated that he wants guys who care more than the majority of the '08 club did. But whether Kenny will trade Crede for Jonathan Sanchez or Brad Hennessy -- I can't see Sabean giving up Limcecum or Cain for Crede -- is the $64,000 question.

The colon rumor is odd
not because the Sox shouldn't (or don't seem likely to) be interested in Colon, but because of who "broke" the story.

It seems odd to me that St. Louis CBS affiliate has any connection to the Dominican Republic. (It seems their report is the only link between the two, and everything else was reported off of their info) I mean how would they go about obtaining such information.

I imagine it was something like this: Local weatherman, Skip Skyhammer, was on vacation in the DR. Apparently Skip is a baseball fan, Cardinals fan specifically, and something of an aspiring amateur scout. He decided to take in a local baseball game, hearing Bartolo Colon was likely to pitch. Upon entering the stadium, he came across a gregarious and loquacious hispanic who happened to be wearing a White Sox hat and swearing up a storm.

Thus, Ozzie Guillen is scouting Bartolo Colon in the Dominican... according to Skip Skyhammer.

I was at the Habs/Hawks game in Montreal
what an experience -- the fans there were wonderful and Montreal had a completely-class hour-long presentation before the game highlighting the rivalry between Montreal and the Hawks, mainly the 1961 Cup (I believe the Hawks beat the Habs in the semis) as well as the '71 Cup (damn that would've been a tough one to live through -- Hawks blew a 2-0 lead in Game 7).

I definitely have to make the Canadian rounds.  I think next year I'm going to try and see 'em in Toronto.

... man, game 7 in the stadium, when home ice really meant something.

frickin' henri richard scored on a  shot from center ice that got past espo because of the fog or something. what a heartbreaking loss. i was stunned.

nice sidebar to the habs-hawks rivalry is that denis savard wanted to be a canadien but they wouldn't draft him because they thought he was too small. so he "too smalled" with the hawks for a HOF career. Of course, he had to go to montreal to get to drink from the cup. but now he's our coach, finally a chance to resurrect this franchise.

Yankees pull trade offer for Johan Santana...
ESPN is reporting that the Yankees have again pulled their offer for Johan Santana off the table.
The Yankees will not restart trade talks with the Twins unless Hank Steinbrenner has another change of heart, a baseball official with knowledge of the talks told 1050 ESPN Radio's Andrew Marchand. The Yankees' offer for Santana was believed to include Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera and one or two prospects.

This approach does open up a lot of material for writers and sports talk radio. There are an infinite number of things the Yankees won't do. Discussing those can chew up a lot of air time or column space.

Ricciardi is acting like Glaus is completely damaged goods.  He either got hosed or, well, I don't know how you can win with Rolen's contract being the way it is.  Has he lost it?
His little smile pissed me off.

by colintj on Jan 14, 2008 1:04 PM CST reply actions

If Rolen is healthy...
he's more valuable than Glaus.  He's almost as good a hitter, and he's much more valuable defensively.

The question is whether or not he's healthy.  It's quite a gamble by J.P.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jan 14, 2008 1:06 PM CST up reply actions

This strikes me as a
"save my ass" sort of deal.  The team would be better off with Glaus, who's coming off the books soon enough and is equally unhealthy, than Rolen, who is owed $36M through '10 and has an NTC.  Rolen's walk rate and power seem to be evaporating and every time he gets injured, he's coming back less physically capable than before.  Ricciardi is gambling that even that prospect is better than Glaus and his expiring contract and the Cardinals apparently agree (considering the direction of the money).

Bottom line: he's paying 12 mil for 3 years for an injury-riddled history and the upcoming age 33-35 seasons.  Opportunity cost is pretty huge and the payoff likely won't be...unless the payoff is personal (i.e. he keeps his job).

His little smile pissed me off.

Rangers DFA 1B Chris Shelton...
to make room for recently signed RHP Kazuo Fukumori.

If the Angels would give up Howie Kendrick and Ervin Santana for Konerko, I would keep Swisher in CF and claim Shelton to start at 1B.  Shelton's minor league numbers are really good and he hit well recently for the Tigers.  He should just now be hitting his prime at 27 - 28 years of age.  It would be yet another step in getting younger as a team.

by SSH2005 on Jan 14, 2008 2:51 PM CST reply actions

Then, when Thome is gone...
acquire a true CF'er or go with Shelby (if he is the real deal), move Swisher to 1B, and make Shelton the DH.

by SSH2005 on Jan 14, 2008 2:54 PM CST up reply actions

Do you really want Chris Shelton as a DH?
I don't.  He K's a ton, and doesn't get on base that well.  His 2005 season looks decent, but you have to remember he hit 9 HRs in the first month.

by BoKnows on Jan 14, 2008 2:57 PM CST up reply actions

Chris Shelton...
Shelton's minor league stats:  .311 AVG / .410 OBP / .500 SLG / .910 OPS
Shelton's major league stats:  .281 AVG / .348 OBP / .477 SLG / .825 OPS

Konerko's career OBP is only .353 and he is turning 32 soon while Shelton is only 27 years old.

by SSH2005 on Jan 14, 2008 3:16 PM CST up reply actions

I think...
Shelton can probably provide equivalent production to Konerko at a fraction of the price.

But I'm on record as not liking Konerko as much as most Sox fans do.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jan 14, 2008 3:20 PM CST up reply actions

Come on....
You can't look at those stats without putting them into perspective.  He got off to an unbelievable start in 2005 that make his pro numbers look much better than they really were.  The Mayor, Sean Casey forced him back to AAA.

by BoKnows on Jan 14, 2008 3:24 PM CST up reply actions

His numbers...
in 2006 weren't bad, either.

Shelton isn't great, but he's better than several first basemen who do have jobs.

And I'll never understand what the Tigers saw in Sean Casey.  He was not better than Shelton in any way.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jan 14, 2008 3:28 PM CST up reply actions

Shelton still put up a decent line in 2006...
in 373 at bats:

.273 AVG / .340 OBP / .466 SLG / .806 OPS

Meanwhile, Sean Casey was a ton worse for the Tigers (.245/.286/.364/.650) in 2006 as Shelton's replacement and he was bad on the season (.272/.336/.388/.724) as well, when you include his numbers with the Pirates.

Teams don't always make the right moves with their players, ya know?

by SSH2005 on Jan 14, 2008 3:30 PM CST up reply actions

What's more likely...
is that Dye becomes the DH and Swisher moves to right field.

I like Shelton, too, but I don't see the fit.  Swisher isn't a center fielder - one of the biggest reasons for moving Konerko is to find a home for Swisher.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jan 14, 2008 2:58 PM CST up reply actions

Saw Shelton last year with the Mud Hens
He was nothing exceptional in AAA ball (strikes out), in a rather blah Mudhens line up.

Good if we want a slow footed, low OBP, off and on power hitter (as if we don't have enough of that!!)
