I think...
Gossage and Rice get in, although Rice won't deserve it.

And O'Neil isn't in the Hall of Fame because he wasn't quite good enough as a player, and they don't have an "ambassador of the game" category.  So it goes.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jan 7, 2008 2:46 PM CST reply actions

seems to me
o'neill should be in as a manager and coach, if not for "overall contribution." had a good record in the negro league and was the first black coach in the majors. we can debate the merits, but i imagine there were still players even in chicago and even in the early 60s who weren't particularly happy about taking orders from a black man. at any rate, i don't run the HOF and my hall would be way different from theirs - and would include ambassadors. or, at the very least, i would expand the pioneer category beyond simply those who were executives.

by larry on Jan 7, 2008 3:07 PM CST up reply actions

I agree...
the Hall would look differently if I was running it, to, and there would be room for O'Neil.

But the way it's set up now, I can understand why O'Neil isn't in.

It may be a slow day, but...
Thx for the new thread!  It took you long enough (slacker)...
It should be called Bill Veeck Park!

the fans have spoken
poll on who should be CF/LF combo. swisher and owens lead the way.

wiz didn't post a new thread because he was busy trying to prop up the voting for swisher/BA. and a small group of cubs fan jokesters want ozuna/swisher. i was disappointed at the lack of an ozuna/ramirez option.

Goose!
I just hope the Trib shows pictures of him with a Sox hat and not a lame-o cubs or yankees hat....

Providing of course, that he actually gets elected. Which is wayyy overdue.

by ruffster on Jan 8, 2008 12:49 PM CST reply actions

He'll get elected.
I think the voters realised that it's stupid to let in Bruce Sutter and not Rich Gossage.

And he'll wear a Yankee hat on his Hall plaque.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jan 8, 2008 12:55 PM CST up reply actions

hats
does the player still decide which team he'll represent in the hall or no?
12/12/07- We'll miss you Andy Gonzalez

by The Deacon on Jan 8, 2008 12:57 PM CST up reply actions

Not anymore...
after a couple of players started talking about signing contracts where they would wear the team's hat in the Hall in exchange for more money.

The Hall asks the player what they would like, and they take that into consideration, but they can ignore Goose if he asks to wear, say, a Rangers hat.

Had a 3-picture feature- sox, yankees, padres. The Goose was something else as a young Sox pitcher. Too bad it was mostly folklore and 1975. Veeck traded him for Zisk for a memorable '77 season, and then the yankees swooped in with the big cash after that.

goose is in
[sn]:
Gossage elected to Baseball Hall of Fame

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Rich "Goose" Gossage was announced Tuesday as the newest member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Gossage, one of the most intimidating pitchers of all-time, was the only player elected by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. He will be inducted at Cooperstown on July 27.

There were 543 ballots submitted by members of the BBWAA with 10 or more consecutive years of service. Players needed to be named on 75 percent of those ballots to gain election, meaning 408 votes were required this year.

Gossage, who spent 22 years in the big leagues with nine different teams, was listed on 86 percent of the ballots. He was 21 votes shy last year when Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gywnn were elected.

Former MVP outfielders Jim Rice and Andre Dawson again came up short. Rice, in his 14th year on the ballot, was named on 72.2-percent of the ballots.

mcgwire got only 23.6%
[MLB.com]:
In the wake of last month's Mitchell Report, Mark McGwire, the first star player tainted by the steroids era to face the electorate, finished at 23.6 percent, almost exactly the same place as last year, when he also received 128 votes despite hitting 70 homers in 1998 to win his famous record home run race against Sammy Sosa and finishing with 583 in his career. In 2007, McGwire also received an underwhelming 23.5 percent.

Of the 11 first-timers on the ballot, only one -- Tim Raines -- received the requisite 5 percent to remain on the ballot. Raines earned 132 or 24.3 percent. Dave Concepcion, the shortstop on Cincinnati's great "Big Red Machine" teams of the 1970s, received 88 votes or 16.2 percent on his 15th and final chance among the writers.

Andre Dawson, who hobbled on bad knees through many of his 21 seasons with the Expos, Cubs, Red Sox and Marlins, received almost a 10-percent uptick to 65.9 percent and may be right on the bubble in 2009. Voters from the Baseball Writers' Association of America also are taking another look at Bert Blyleven, a pitcher whose career ended after 22 seasons, just 13 victories shy of 300. Blyleven finished fourth behind Gossage, Rice and Dawson with a healthy 61.9 percent of the vote.

amazing stat
Goose only allowed more than 10 hr's in '74 when he was a starter for the Sox.

goose-   1809 ip, 119 hr's
sutter-  1042 ip,  77 hr's
eck-     3285 ip, 347 hr's
fingers- 1701 ip, 123 hr's
rivera-   953 ip,  49 hr's
hoffman   942 ip,  82 hr's
l smith  1289 ip,  89 hr's
lyle     1390 ip,  84 hr's

Goose only gave up 4 earned runs in 1981. Unreal. bbref already has his hof banner up.

by ruffster on Jan 8, 2008 1:40 PM CST reply actions

amazing, yes
and Rivera's is more so.  In the 903 IP since he became a fulltime RP, only 41 HR's.  AND that during a period of lots of longballs...

And that's it.
In 268 plate appearances against Rivera, White Sox batters have two home runs.

Total line (White Sox vs. Rivera) - .190/.236/.250.

Yeah.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jan 8, 2008 3:57 PM CST up reply actions

Not far off.
MLB vs. Mariano Rivera - .216/.271/.294.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jan 8, 2008 4:24 PM CST up reply actions

i'd be interested to know
if this is one of those cases where more plate appearances help (i.e., al east mainstays have better lines against rivera). or the sox just aren't that good and wouldn't be no matter how many times they face him. considering the sox haven't been particularly lefty-heavy, one would think the sox may have had a slight advantage there.

by larry on Jan 8, 2008 4:29 PM CST up reply actions

He does tend to dominate...
the NL teams that don't see him very often.  Interleague opponents are batting .176/.226/.245 off him.

The AL team that's done the best off of Rivera is the Orioles (.251/.293/.370, with eight homers in 389 plate appearances).  The worst?  The Twins (.190/.238/.223, with no homers).

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jan 8, 2008 4:37 PM CST up reply actions

i just noticed for the first time
that jenks is also tougher on lefties, albeit in an obviously much smaller yet not insubstantial sample size.
Please don't dominate the rap, jack, if you've got nothing new to say.

by Toonderstrook on Jan 8, 2008 4:47 PM CST up reply actions

i think that's always been the case
so i don't think i'd worry about the sample size. his fastball causes them fits.
