Is the drooling mandatory?
Do sportswriters flip some sort of a drooling switch on as soon as they see peter pan?
One of my enduring memories of the 2002 World Series is how happy Darin Erstad's teammates were for him. He played through some frustrating seasons in Anaheim before that magical run, and the people around him respected everything from how he produced on the field to how he carried himself off it. As Ed Wade said, Darin Erstad is a prototype for what a franchise would like every player to be.

Let's say right up front that it's impossible to know if Erstad has anything left in the tank. He's 33 years old and hasn't played much the last two seasons. He hit .221 in 2006, .248 in 2007. His last really productive season was 2005. But in the reconstruction of the Astros, Erstad is exactly the kind of player Wade needs. He'll set an example in every way.

That's also true of Geoff Blum, Woody Williams, Ty Wigginton, Roy Oswalt and Doug Brocail. I don't know enough about some of the newcomers to know where they fit in or not.

Erstad fits in as a fourth outfielder and as insurance in center in case Michael Bourn isn't productive. He can also play first. He's no longer the kind of guy a lineup can be constructed around, but inside the clubhouse, his influence will be important. He's also a career .284 hitter, and given his age, it's possible he can still be productive.

"as insurance in center in case Michael Bourn isn't productive" should be "as insurance in center in case Michael Bourn is productive."

That's right
Delvis Lantigua never made it so Gio and DLS won't either. Every bottle of Bud I've ever had was pretty lousy, so a bottle of Bells Stout will probably suck  as well.

its bullshit that the White Sox PR dept
puts this out.

That is bush league to say, "here's the shit we foisted on our trading partners."  Aren't trades supposed to work out for both teams (at least that's what PR depts are supposed to say)?

Its bad karma too...

Bell's
Sadly, I think it is still unavailable in Chicago. I have in-laws in Michigan that have been kind enough to export some to me when they've visited. I did read that Bell's brewery is going to try reintroducing itself into Chicago under a new label ("Kalmazoo") but I think you can only get that on tap right now.

I think that might be the most
annoying aspect of Chicago and beer.  Michigan, from what I've found, is a hell of a lot better with a ton of great breweries all over the state.

I saw this the other day
there are a few points worth noting...

Of the players KW has traded (young players, i.e add Wells, McCarthy), the ones with the highest ceiling have exited most recently. Off the top of my head, ranking them by ceiling at the time of trade, I (extremely subjectively) go something like this...

Young
DLS
Gio
Carter
Wells
McCarthy
Reed
Webster (tons of tools, didn't come together. Still has his fans)
Sweeney (I had sweeney higher, but that was the sweeney of a year+ ago.)
Cortes (He could be higher, as he's toolsy still lots of potential)
Francisco
Cunningham
Rausch (his ceiling was significantly lower after the injury)
Lumsden
Morse
Majewski
Fogg
Haigwood
Guerrier
Ring
Myette
Rupe

I'm probably missing some, but you get the idea.... The previously traded pieces are firecrackers or m-80's compared to the sticks of dynamite he's begun to throw around in the last 26 months. There's one or two that are bound to blow up in his face, and when it's bigger ammunition you're increasingly more likely to lose the nickname "lucky" and pickup the nickname "stumpy"

True...
I was going to get uplifted after seeing Larry's post, but I was curious to know what their rating was when they were traded. If they were all junk when traded, then it's obvious they wouldn't turn up great now.

I was willing to bet that few of those pitchers were in our top 3. I know your claim is subjective, Cheat, so anyone have any real numbers on the highest rated prospects KW has dealt?

It'd be interesting to see. DLS, Gio, and Young certainly appear to be the best he's ever traded.

by Shoeless In SC on Jan 8, 2008 11:33 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I weighted by ceiling
so Reed might have been the "best" prospect at the time of trade, but since his ceiling was something like a 290/370/430 #2 hitting LFer he ranked lower... Carter and DLS have a bunch of time before they turn into anything or fail completely, but they have BIG, big potential.

ah i see
When I said "real" numbers I meant ratings by ratings gurus like Sickels, BP, etc. All those ratings are really subjective so there are no "real" numbers. They are just as subjective as yours, Cheat. Also, it's not like I don't trust your evaluation, but I would like to see theirs as well. I'm not sure where to look...

very good
point cheat.  i know this isnt a good way to look at it, but just by the law of averages, a few of the guys recently traded are going to become good major league ball players.  granted young has a few flaws, but a very close to 30/30 rookie!??? cmon, thats somethign special already.  i totally agree that its bullcrap that the white sox are releasing a list like this to say "see, we told you so, our deals always work out" and definitely has a bite in the ass moment waiting to happen.  you have to believe that either gio or DLS will be a good starter.  thats not saying we're going to regret this deal, but it is really stupid for the white sox to allow the PR dept to be that pompous.

The sox deal Konerko to the Orioles for Roberts straight up or include Crede and get Bedard too? I have a feeling that KW has been activly pursing his "guy" Bedard all off season. He has a real hard on for him and so do I.

KW could have really helped the Sox here.

Where's all the media stories about how the Sox drafted Goose in the 9th round gave him his nickname and developed him into a closer and the stories of 5 years on the Sox ? Wrong side of town I guess so no parade.

i just have
a hard time seeing KW give up on richar this early.  by no means am i endorsing richar as THE 2B solution.  The only way i see KW trading konerko is if he really feels that he needs the defense and thinks this lineup can still produce without konerko.

Now that they have 12 second basemen, could the Sox (Uribe) be a natural trading partner for the Northsiders?

I don't see how
Ronny Cedeno is clearly a better player than Theriot.

Cedeno has never hit well at the Major League level.  He is younger and was a highly regarded prospect by some, but if contending is what you want the Cubs to do, then Theriot is the more valuable player for the present.

by BoKnows on Jan 9, 2008 10:50 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Cedeno may not be any better than Theriot...
but I would be willing to give him the full-time shot at it.  However, I'm not sure that the Cubs could live without Theriot's .672 OPS from last season.

theriot is garbage
and so is Cedeno. At least Cedeno put up great numbers in AAA.

Theriot is at least better than Izturis. God he was awful.

The Cubs are overloaded at 2B. They need someone who can play SS. DeRosa supposedly -can- or -used- to. I dunno if he can anymore.

DeRosa/Roberts would be nice.

"God knows I gave my best in baseball at all times and no man on earth can truthfully judge me otherwise."

by Shoeless In SC on Jan 9, 2008 12:41 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

true.
that is even assuming DeRosa can hack it at SS. They should trade for Uribe...

My buddy, a Cubs fan, has voiced to me that he would like Uribe. He is a very knowledgeable guy, a real stathead, and still seems to not mind his offensive tendencies. He likes his glove.

Uribe could probably do no worse than Theriot or Cedeno. Or could he?

hmmm
personally, i wouldn't take uribe over theriot. but if the cubs fans want him, by all means.

by larry on Jan 9, 2008 1:08 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

so would i
but ive had that argument with a few of the "normal" cubs fans and they treat theriot like hes a god.  one of them were dumb enough to tell me that o-cab was just another caesar izturis....

uribe can backup all IF positions right?
isn't that more valuable than guys who can backup only 1-2 positions?

by The Wizard on Jan 9, 2008 1:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

when you're talking about
similar OPS, yeah, I would think Uribe would be more valuable.

I'd like to send Uribe over to the Cubs for a reliever.

don't be drawn in by the siren of OPS
OBP is way more important than slugging; theriot kills uribe there. eqa is a much better "quick look" measure of offense.

by larry on Jan 9, 2008 1:22 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

sure
but they have derosa who is better than uribe offensively and can play most infield (and outfield) positions. if they do this deal, they will probably need to pick up a utility player who can play SS; i'm just not sure i'd pay uribe that much to be a backup and certainly not on the roster the cubs have right now (or with the roberts trade).

at any rate, i thought SC was referring to who would i start at SS. theriot, hands down.

Not when he's only good for...
a below .700 OPS with a $4.5 million dollar salary.

uribe vs. theriot fielding stats
how do they compare to each other?

Cub Rotation
Is a joke now.
Zambrano - now has contract will get as big as Colon and CC Sabbathia
Lilly - he will come back to earth
Hill - good upside
Marquis - cut from my 16 inch softball team
Dempster - Mr. Unclutch

The 4 and 5 starters are brutal, at best.

They will get out of the weak NL Central but will lose out to the Phils, Mets, DBacks or Rockies.

Yep
Cub Payroll keeps rising!

After Fukudome and now Roberts...what are they at?

Roberts is due $6.3m this year and $8m in 2009.

Wasn't...
...that father/son duo who ran onto the field at a Cub game earlier in the day?  I thought that came out later, or am I confused.

Boras on Ankiel who's headed for arbitration
[stl pd via BBTF]:
"You have a player whose contributions came first as a pitcher, then as a position player," the agent [boras] said. "The last player you're really talking about is Babe Ruth."

by The Wizard on Jan 9, 2008 12:54 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I'ts amazing...
that Ankiel is still arb-eligible.  He made his debut in 1999.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jan 9, 2008 1:00 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

and
he's arb-eligible next year, too.

by larry on Jan 9, 2008 1:02 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Its not so amazing
That Boras would try to compare him to Ruth... must be because they had the same success as pitchers.

Ruth's hot dogs = Ankiel's HGH
Please don't dominate the rap, jack, if you've got nothing new to say.

Both lefties, sure,
but Ruth had that (alleged) African-American DNA.

Gotta add what God didn't put in, right?  DNA has 3 letters.  So does HGH.

Close enough.  $8MM/year is the starting price.
