First Full-Squad practice today

Ozzie's in mid-season form.
Watch your back, Mariotti.
Spring training, the not-yet-playing-games portion, begins in earnest later today, with Ozzie Guillen promising to deliver an explicative-laced address to his team. That 'give 'em hell' speech will be followed by the first full-squad practice of the spring. Everyone is expected to be in attendance except Danny Richar, who has already raised Guillen's ire by experiencing the all-too-common visa problems.

As far as I'm concerned the big news out of Wednesday's live bullpen session was a sighting of John Danks' perhaps-no-longer-mythical cutter by Josh Fields, who called the pitch "nastier than advertised." Supposedly, Danks has been bragging about his Buehrle-like cutter for some time now, which would make him the Larry of the White Sox clubhouse. I had just assumed that Danks' cutter was something that Larry was making up.

The fact that a major league hitter has seen Danks' cutter in the wild makes me feel better about his future. It helps temper some of those troubling trends I've pointed out in the past and gives me hope that he can use that cutter to cut his homerun rate this season.

Oh yeah, and there are those pesky Bartolo Colon rumors. Those rumors prompted Kenny to go on a rant about blogs, websites, and inaccurate reports wasting all his time. I think I heard him say he was waiting for the press release, which would make him the JRE of the Sox front office.

Comcast quoted "a source within the White Sox" as saying a deal with Colon was unlikely, but not something they could rule out. I don't really see a fit unless the deal is of the minor league variety. Otherwise, it's just guaranteeing money and a roster spot to over 30 pitcher who's battled injuries each of the last two seasons. We've already got one of those, and that's plenty.

Kenny
Is probably pissed because Colon is using the white sox to make it seem like they are interested in him so he can get a better deal. Or this is a prelude to a major move. If he can package up Crede and or Fields with Floyd or Danks we will need a starter unless we get one in return.

I posted elsewhere, but the real news is
Fields had a 7-pitch AB.  Either Danks is getting better or Fields is getting more patient.  (Positives, both.  I refuse to suppose any negatives in ST.)

Anderson just looking for a chance
Real convincing from the Oz

''He's going to be out there,'' Guillen said. ''We never doubt Brian could play in this league. We give him a pretty good shot. It didn't work out the way we thought. That's the reason we went after a couple of guys.

''But if he show up at spring training and take the job, I don't know if he will be playing every day, but he has a legit shot to make the ballclub.''

That's all Anderson wants

Come on KW - just trade the guy already, whatever the issue with him and Oz, it appears it won't be resolved anytime soon.

i'm glad to hear my reputation is such
that people - including the head man in charge of this site - think i'm creating fictitious pitches for our players.

at any rate, this is why i've always been optimistic about danks and the trade that brought him here. this is moneyball, folks. exploiting inefficiencies and comparative advantages. to many observers - including many on this site who i have had the danks-mccarthy disccusion with in the past - the trade looked pretty much like a straight swap or, worse, one that some, based upon a 22 year old's rookie season, thought the sox may not have actually gotten anything all that good. this, of course, illustrates the danger of evaluating trades based upon one season. because, all along, the sox had the intention of teaching danks the cutter. to borrow from my good friend phil rogers, the sox saw a mini mark buerhle - who was just missing an essential ingredient. and what better place to add that ingredient than with MB and coop? of course, adding an ingredient such as a new pitch isn't something that comes quickly to fruitition (rule of thumb spouted by many is 1000 repetitions before a pitcher has a good handle on a new pitch). so patience, grasshoppers. the best is yet to come.

in the past
i've resisted the urge to state on here what effect the addition of the cutter could be for him. i'll continue that - certainly at least until i've seen him pitch a few times in ST, if not during the regular season. but i will say that, while i appreciate the work and study people have done on danks (including the cheat a few posts below, not to mention my own study of his peripherals), i think the addition of the cutter makes such things largely irrelevant. it will make him a very different - and much better - pitcher. i've always thought it odd that the "optimists" on here - you know, you guys who think the sox are one starter away from contention - haven't latched onto the idea that maybe the starter you're looking for is already on the team. i know some people on here think KW is deluding himself and others when he says he's happy with his pitching staff. this, i think, is a primary reason for that optimism.

...I must say, you really do have a man-crush on John Danks.  For now, I will assume Danks will still have the same repertoire of pitches until I see him throw the cutter to live batters and he is able to get it over the plate.

No, I believe I hold the title,
esp. if you ask my wife.  Danks was being crucified last year when he started hitting the wall, both in the middle of every game (corroborated by his "through the lineup" stats) and the middle of the season.  Folks were giving up on the trade/Danks way too early, said a few of us (and I was one).  He's a kid, and thus has a bit of time to learn.

I'm open-minded to the idea that we have not seen his best in '07, and that is (now) seen as a much more reasonable opinion than the "he sucks, why did we get him?" mantra we were hearing last year.  Shoot, have Haegermeister teach him the knucksie someday - he's competitive (Pete was on that bandwagon in the spring last year) and may have a great mental make-up to be a mid-rotation pitcher.  Good for us.

Its just at least for me I havent exactly wanted to put that one in print. Im sure most think my glasses are rose colored enough. I have never cared where the 3rd upper tier starter came from, FA, trade or on staff.

At the very least the 3-5 is interesting. Most are doubtful but the potential is there.

Contreras - Is old as hell but may be drama free for the year. Will it make a difference?

Floyd- Most agree good stuff, but can he make the transition between the ears?

Danks- Cutter gate... Stay tuned.

That is exactly why I tried to press you on numbers. We all saw the effect of learning a new pitch first hand. A Mr. Esteban Loaiza. I know every story doesnt end that way but a guy can dream.

Well
as one of the "optimists" I've been very pro-danks. Although I missed the previous discussion if you examine previous posts you'll see I like him quite a bit. Not specifically because I knew he's got a cutter, but more generally because 22 lefties with good stuff and decent K rates at the MLB level typically improve over time (barring injury). Whether that be because of adding new pitches, improving on old pitches, better control, better pitch selection or whatever I was confident Danks would find his way. Here's to hoping that the cutter will be the key!

by bhoov on Feb 21, 2008 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

The cutter and some support
I liked Danks from the start - but that no run support has to wear you down quickly. I was at a lot of those game, and it was unfortunate that he would start off strong, then seem to just not get it over the plate on a regular basis. A left hander with his confidence is not someone I would quit on this early in his career. Nor would I look to move him to the bullpen for any immediate reason. Twenty one and in the majors, he must have some ability that you should not overlook.
I still feel he will be a top pitcher given a short amount of time and some defense and run support.
So instead of a big splash, there were ripples -- enough to change the tide, Williams believes

by Brush Back on Feb 21, 2008 3:43 PM CST up reply actions

I hope you're right
I've said before that I think he has the pitches with or without the cutter -- some days he succeeded with just a fastball and change.  My biggest fear is that he really didn't look like he was pitching as much as praying in the second half.  Shell shock and all that.

A lot of guys get over that, and some guys don't.  Gavin Floyd's a good example of the latter, although he might rebound himself -- a few years later.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports that the Cardinals are interested in Jeff Weaver and Bartolo Colon.
St. Louis is clearly looking for additional rotation depth given the uncertain status of Mark Mulder, Chris Carpenter and Matt Clement. There's speculation that Colon could be close to signing with the White Sox, but Weaver figures to be available for a minor league contract.

on colon
[Scot Gregor]:
Two hurdles stand in front of Colon's return to the South Side.

First, he is rumored to be seeking an $8 million contract for this season, although that figure has been dropping. The Sox reportedly offered a one-year, incentive-based deal.

For as good as he has been, Colon has missed most of the past two seasons with shoulder injuries, and he also has back issues. Colon was a combined 7-13 with a 5.90 ERA the past two years.

Second, at least 10 other teams are rumored to be after the 34-year-old pitcher, and Colon reportedly is interested in signing with a National League team.

After coming up empty in pursuits of free agents Torii Hunter, Kosuke Fukudome and Aaron Rowand during the off-season, Williams obviously is trying to avoid another round of bad publicity.

The trade looks amazing to me...
Paxson dumped aging Wallace's awful contract and picks up a better player in Gooden and a big guard that the Bulls have wanted for years.  Hughes' contract is pretty bad but dumping Wallace was worth it.

by SSH2005 on Feb 21, 2008 3:06 PM CST up reply actions

Better than what we gave up.
Ben Wallace was a huge disappointment.

I like Drew Gooden.  He's a solid 4.  This move frees up minutes for Noah and the Bulls are better when he is on the court (addition by subtraction..Wallace will be off the court).

Hughes had to be included to make the contracts work.  He will probably become the 2 or 3rd guard off the bench.

by BoKnows on Feb 21, 2008 3:09 PM CST up reply actions

I can speak to Gooden
seeing him in Orlando for a year.  Looks great on paper, great tools, will break your heart.  He's been traded what, 3 times now?  Something doesn't fit.  But he can board pretty well, which seems to be a Bulls weakness.

Hughes is interesting - I wonder why they let him go?  I bet he wasn't happy deferring to LBJ.  Wonder if his injury last year is affecting him, too.

Looks like a decent trade.

by The Wizard on Feb 21, 2008 3:49 PM CST up reply actions

Hughes just never fit with the Cavs style
he's better off the dribble than catching and shooting or coming off of screens, and since LBJ is the focal point of the Cleveland offense he had to do a lot of that.

His contract is pretty bad, but he does provide insurance incase the Bulls trade or let Gordon go after this year.

Gooden's contract is up after next season, so he will provide value due to his play as well as being an expiring contract.

I realy like this trade for the Bulls since Wallace brought nothing to the table and I'd rather waste money on Hughes than on Wallace. Hughes has the potential to actually be a productive member of the team, plus he'll be able to defend taller 2-guards since they give the Bulls fits with their small guards and all. Don't forget, Hughes led the league in steals when he was on the Wizards, so as long as he's healthy he'll contribute. The question though is who's going to lose minutes? I fear Thabo will be firmly entrenched on the bench, though I'd love for Duhon's minutes to be minimized instead

Full Bulls trade details...
"Three-team deal sends Wallace to Cavs"
A little more than one and a half seasons after Bulls general manager John Paxson and then-coach Scott Skiles made a splash by signing Wallace away from the Detroit Pistons for $60 million over four years, the Bulls have agreed in principle to ship the center, along with Joe Smith and a future second-round pick, to Cleveland as part of a three-team deal that included Seattle.

The Cavs also received Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West from the SuperSonics. Chicago also sent Adrian Griffin to Seattle, which also acquired Ira Newble and Donyell Marshall from Cleveland.

The Bulls will receive Larry Hughes, Drew Gooden, Cedric Simmons and Shannon Brown from Cleveland.

The trade awaits league approval but is expected to go through.
