Buehrle gets the Opening Day start

and Javy gets the home opener says Joe Cowley:

Manager Ozzie Guillen unofficially made it official on Friday that Mark Buehrle would indeed start his sixth Opening Day in the last seven years.

The way the rotation sets up right now - with a slight subject to change - It will be Buehrle against Cleveland in the opener, followed by Javier Vazquez and John Danks. Jose Contreras would then start the three-game series in Detroit, followed by Gavin Floyd and then Buehrle. As far as the home opener, that will fall to Vazquez, rewarding the veteran right-hander for his 15-8 2007 season.

Mark Gonzales and Scott Merkin report it too.

At Cleveland and then at Detroit
Then home against Minnesota, Detroit and Oakland....all before April 15th.

Bad enough the Sox bats will have to try and get it going at at Cleveland and at Detroit...but then all the cold weather!!

I could see this being a very long April.

shelby reports to camp
[MarkMALONEY@HERALD-LEADER]:
The former Tates Creek and University of Kentucky baseball standout reported Tuesday to Chicago White Sox training camp in Arizona.

...

On to Kannapolis last year, he recovered from a slow start to bat .301 over 122 games, with 16 homers and 79 RBI. He became more disciplined at the plate, with a .352 on-base percentage and .508 slugging.

He hit .322 with 13 homers and 54 RBI after the all-star break and had a 24-game hitting streak. His move to center was not an issue.

Lessons learned include his approach at the plate.

"I had a big leg kick at UK, and you can't get away with that now, with people throwing 96, 97 (mph) or their closers," he said. "I had to kind of settle down. Now my swing is a little more compact, and it's actually got me a little bit more power -- a little-bit-easier power."

He also learned to hit to the opposite field, using the whole park, rather than try to pull as he did so often for UK.

Maybe this is why Kenny is so pissed off...
at the media.  First, he loses out on his #1 free agent target Torii Hunter and now he may lose out on Bartolo Colon:
"As hoarse White Sox, the Boston Red Sox sent to find Bartolo Colon"

Impact Sports

Somehow, the Boston Red Sox are adding another pitcher.

There was talk of Odalís Perez, but the left-handed went to Nationals.

This Friday, was informed Impactodeportivo.com.do, Bartolo Colon has been summoned by the Red Sox.

And that the offer could be better than the White Sox.

So what Ozzie Guillen cancanea, Columbus could landing at the Fenway Park in Boston.

The media has reported many of Kenny's moves this offseason before they were made official -- the possible Hunter signing, the Linebrink signing, the Ramirez signing, the Dotel signing, and the possible Colon signing.  The only moves Kenny made that were "under-the-radar" were the Garland for Cabrera trade, the Quentin trade, and the Swisher trade.  Kenny is probably fed up with getting scooped on his signings and near-signings.  He probably feels that he lost out on Hunter and now maybe Colon because of the mass media.

by SSH2005 on Feb 23, 2008 1:35 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Another thought...
I hope this isn't the reason that Kenny then signed Tomo Ohka.

by SSH2005 on Feb 23, 2008 1:37 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

And another, hehe...
I can understand the Red Sox being interested in Colon after finding out that Curt Schilling could miss much of the season but isn't their rotation still covered even without him?

Josh Beckett
Daisuke Matsuzaka
Clay Buchholz
Tim Wakefield
Jon Lester

Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester are much better than the combination of John Danks and Gavin Floyd.  It seems to me that Colon would have a much better chance of landing a spot in the White Sox rotation, than the Red Sox.  Even if Schilling misses the entire season, the Red Sox have more than enough protection for their rotation to the point that signing Colon wouldn't make much sense for them.  What do you guys think?

Now see, there's the problem right there...
the White Sox continue to talk to free agents and their representatives.  It is time to take a cue from the Red Sox and just start summoning these bastards.  I think it is high time that we start acting like English lords of the 1600s and just summon the hell out of the players we are interested in.  If they have a problem with that, then we'll just banish them to another team.
Why don't you crack an egg of knowledge all over me, buddy.

i'm confused
how does the media reporting any of this have an effect on whether they sign with the sox? if KW is pissed at anything, he's pissed that the press decides to act like deals are done when they are far from it (i recall bruce levine and his "the deal is done with MB" - about two weeks too early) or they make up stories and then KW has to answer questions about this stuff. every story that was written about hunter outside of chicago made it pretty clear that there were quite a few teams still in the running when the sun times published their "it's pretty much done" story and he wasn't going to make the decision for another week. the angels making an offer that was substantially higher had little to nothing to do with the sox offer. and this colon - white sox thing always sounded pretty bunk to me. it wouldn't surprise me if there was interest but i don't think the sox interest is particularly high. KW wants to do a little dumpster diving and colon isn't really inside the dumpster - he's more leaning up against it.

by larry on Feb 23, 2008 10:28 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I Agree..
I think KW is more or less sick of reporters being too smart for their own good. They seem to have "inside sources" and whatnot, but in reality those sources should only be considered "inside" if they are actually employed by the organiztion. It would piss me off too if there were news articles about me doing shit I haven't done yet, whether I may end up doing them or not.

Kenny needs to get some tougher skin...
If the media isn't reporting on news that I am actually interested in like rumored or possible player acquisitions during the offseason, why would I bother with them?  To read boring fluff pieces about how every player on the team is in the best shape of his career?  No thanks.  The media is just doing their job -- trying to scoop Kenny's moves before they become official.  Kenny needs to worry about his own job (like adding another starter) instead of the media's.

crede back to normal practice
Joe Crede was back in action on Saturday morning, taking batting practice with his teammates, as well as facing live pitching.

Crede was plunked on the left hand by Mike MacDougal on Thursday, and was taken to the hospital for X-Rays. All the tests came back negative, but the hand was swollen enough on Friday that Crede was shut down from any batting practice.
After another day of treatment, the hand was noticeably back to normal size and Crede was cleared to go ahead and participate in the full workout.

Coop's Sweet 45
More drivel. Seems that the ability of those Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, and Indians pitchers to get to 45 wins would be pretty closely related to pitching for four of the top 6 AL scoring offenses. And as for the Cubs, wonder if playing in the worst division ever might have contributed.

2009 spring training: pinar de rio, cuba
[Mark Gonzales]:
The Pittsburgh Pirates trained in Cuba in 1953, and the Los Angeles Dodgers once used Havana as a spring training base in the 1940s.

With the resignation of Fidel Castro as Cuba's president, there's been speculation as to whether the communist country would open its doors to a free market.

White Sox pitcher Jose Contreras, a Cuban defector, sees advantages to returning spring training to Cuba.

"It would be good for the baseball in Cuba," said Contreras, who defected in 2002. "Fifty years ago there was spring training and a winter baseball league in Cuba. If it happens now, it will be really good for the people in Cuba."

That's
a service we've been signed up with for at least two years now... It sounded promising, serving headlines on relevant newspaper sections/articles. But soon after, in order to get more newspapers signed on, they started publishing our full posts. The Sun-Times is the first Chicago area paper to sign on (2 years after I signed up) I had long forgotten about the service. I'll see how it converts on S-T.com, then decide if we stick around. They've only been up and running since Friday on S-T.com.

They've served 50,000 of our headlines already, and we've had about 5-6 clickthroughs to here. Seems like a pretty shitty conversion rate.

Crede hit a home run off batting practice pitcher Omer Munoz, and then batted off pitchers Carlos Vasquez and D.J. Carrasco without favoring his left hand.

"Stewart to fill platoon in left field for Jays"
Nearly five years ago, the Blue Jays traded Shannon Stewart and a minor leaguer to the Twins for Bobby Kielty.

Now, the Jays are on the verge of bringing Stewart back.

Stewart, who turns 34 on Monday, is close to signing a minor-league contract with the Jays. He will compete with Reed Johnson to be the right-handed hitting part of a platoon in left field with Matt Stairs. If Stewart beats out Johnson, he'll likely get 300 to 350 at-bats.

Colon to have workout with Red Sox at Fort Myers
Impacto Deportivo wrote:
"A point of signing; Bartolo Colon joins this Sunday at the Red Sox in Fort Myers"

Impact Sports

The Dominican pitcher Bartolo Colon could finally landing at the Fenway Park in Boston.

And from this Sunday, it could be in Fort Myers training with the world champions.

A relative of the player entrusted Impactodeportivo.com.do, Columbus was required by the club.

That would be this Sunday to Fort Myers for a meeting with the personnel manager Theo Epstein.

Still nothing is sure, but Colon said to be in good shape and if they can convince demonstrates Boston.

The man already has almost work.

So is it possible that the White Sox were close to signing Colon but then when this news leaked out, the Red Sox jumped in offering a better contract?  Maybe this is why Kenny is so pissed off at the media reporting these rumors?  I realize that neither might ever pitch for their respective team but I would rather have Bartolo Colon than Tomo Ohka.

by SSH2005 on Feb 24, 2008 9:24 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I doubt it
It seems like you're looking way, way, way too hard to find things to complain about.  "Wait, if we look at this way, then I have a reason to be upset about Kenny."

Colon's not some secret project -- he's a former Cy Young winner who can be had for pretty cheap, and there are probably a dozen teams calling.  The agent isn't going to keep all offers confidential and then award a team Colon's services; he's going to use them as leverage against each other.  Impacto Deportivo is not giving any team Bartolo Colon news first, unless it's of the fabricated variety.

It seems more to me that Kenny's complaining that it's harder and harder to even put out feelers because everything gets blown up, and he has to answer questions about it and correct wrong jumps to conclusion.

It's more work, more unnecessary work.  Like if somebody saw you socializing casually with a co-worker and assumed you were hooking up with her.  There's nothing technically slanderous or malicious about the rumor, but it's annoying to have to clear the air about something that never came close to happening.

by Sox Machine on Feb 24, 2008 10:01 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

exactly
the red sox didn't suddenly get reminded that colon existed when the "report" came out. media leaks/attention are a heck of a lot less important in the free agent realm - especially when it's late february - than it is the trade arena. no team particularly cares that much whether they get colon. if they did, he would have signed, i don't know, before spring training started.

and drawing a connection to ohka is ridiculous. ohka is AAA fodder, plain and simple.

I'm not ripping on Kenny about Colon...
it just seems like a strange coincidence that the White Sox were close to signing Colon, then Kenny rips on the mass media, and now we have reports of Colon having a workout with the Red Sox.  I would still like to see Kenny add another starter somehow, whether by signing or by trading Crede.

by SSH2005 on Feb 24, 2008 11:35 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

the sox weren't close to signing colon
i don't buy that for a second. the sox aren't going to give up on danks and floyd. colon wants a major league contract and, as you said yourself a few days ago, he'll get it. the sox aren't going to give him a guaranteed rotation spot. there are about ten other teams who would and that number is more likely to grow than decline since pitchers get hurt (gallardo and schilling have already gone down and once the real action begins even more). colon can afford to wait until he finds what he's looking for - likely a starting position with a reasonably good team for a nice guaranteed payday. the sox probably can't offer any of that.

by larry on Feb 24, 2008 12:20 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Good deal if he shows something in ST...
According to WBZ-TV's Dan Roche, Bartolo Colon will earn a little more than $1 million if he makes the Red Sox after agreeing to a minor league contract.
The deal could be made official on Monday.

Kenny wouldn't guarantee Colon $1 million if he made the roster?  Wow.

by SSH2005 on Feb 24, 2008 8:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

might there be more to it?
you act as though it boils down solely to whether the white sox would match the red sox money-wise. couldn't there be numerous other considerations?

perhaps fatolo and his agent believed that the white sox were more likely to give their young starters a lot of rope and the veteran white sox pitchers were less likely to sustain a major injury (as opposed to schilling, etc.).

or perhaps they decided that at least if he made the red sox he would have a real chance at a world series. or that he would have a better shot latching on somewhere else post-boston farm than post-chicago farm.

i just have a hard time believing it's as cut and dry as "kenny wouldn't offer him a minor league contract worth $1M if he makes the team."  if i put myself in his position, i would need a lot of excuses (maybe an extra number at the front of the seven digits) to not gravitate toward the red sox.

You second comment makes sense...
about the Red Sox having a better shot at the World Series but I disagree on your first point.  Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester are much better rotation options than John Danks and Gavin Floyd.  Colon would have had a better shot trying to make our rotation than Boston's.

Will Colon go to the minors?
If he doesn't make the big league club? It's possible the Red Sox have agreed to release him if he doesn't.

I don't know, I don't think KW dropped the ball here. Colon was bad last year and it sounds like he's not in shape now and doesn't have much fastball left. If that's true, I rather see the Sox give Danks, Floyd, Egbert, Haeger, and Broadway shots before Colon. Maybe I'm nuts, but if someone's going to put up a bad ERA, I'd just as soon we see a young guy do it.

To start with. Let the games begin. I have to admit it. The Sox pitchers are looking better to me in a way a fat chick looks better after my sixth drink.

some interesting perspectives/criticisms
"If anything, they value different things than we do," A's director of player personnel Billy Owens said. "Maybe these guys fit our statistical profile better, so we're more able to acquire them. But I think it's more coincidence than anything."

"The White Sox value power arms a lot," Wing said. "The A's are a little more results-oriented. It's not that Chicago isn't a great organization, it is, but they just look for different things."

Going to try and get some video

Just to clarify
Will that video have the expressed written consent of major league baseball or the implied oral consent?
I'll hang up and listen to your answer.
