One game is not enough
From Mark Gonzales' Retro uniforms post:
The Sox will wear their 1983 uniforms (commemorating the 25th anniversary of their American League West title); camouflage jerseys and green outfits for their Halfway to St. Patrick's Day promotion. They will wear their camouflage jerseys on July 4 to honor U.S. troops while dates will be announced later for the other two promotions.
The Sox also will wear Negro League jerseys for a game in Detroit during a series July 25-27.

kenny loves fireballers, current and not current
Armed with a 100-mph fastball, Anderson was selected by Detroit with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1997 draft. The right-hander pitched for the Tigers from 1998-2003, saving 22 games in 2001.
Anderson pitched for the Colorado Rockies in 2005, his last season in the major leagues.
In 2002, Anderson participated in a charity octopus-throwing contest at a Detroit Red Wings game. He tore a muscle under his armpit during the event and never seemed to fully recover.
You can't make that stuff up! (last sentence)

- How long do you think KW pursued M. Anderson before he "got his man"?

Notes: The Rockies' starting lineup for their exhibition opener, which was posted in the clubhouse Tuesday, features a flip-flop of No. 3 hitter Matt Holliday and cleanup hitter Todd Helton. Also, 2B candidate Marcus Giles will serve as the DH against the White Sox with rookie Jayson Nix getting the nod at second.

throwing some leather. or, intrasquad recap
Crede charged quickly and threw to first to retire Donny Lucy in his toughest defensive play during a five-inning intrasquad game.
"If you go out there second-guessing yourself, that's when you get hurt," Crede said.
At the plate, Crede went 0-for-2. He took a called third strike on a sharp breaking curve from Javier Vazquez.
But Crede isolated himself from the speculation that he will likely be traded by the end of spring training.
"I'm going in assuming I'm going to be here in Chicago and whatever happens after that, happens," Crede said.

more recap. or, haeger sucks and masset doesn't
Konerko's slam came one-half inning after NIck Swisher ripped a two-run home run off left-hander Carlos Vazquez with two out in the top of the inning. Non-roster invitee Brad Eldred led off the inning with a triple. Eldred also hit a double and scored on Cole Armstrong's sacrifice fly off Mike MacDougal in the third.
Javier Vazquez pitched two perfect innings and struck out three in front of two major league scouts. Konerko and Jermaine Dye hit consecutive doubles in the fourth.
Nick Masset pitched two scoreless innings.

Crede's comeback...
Crede charged quickly and threw to first to retire Donny Lucy in his toughest defensive play during a five-inning intrasquad game.
"If you go out there second-guessing yourself, that's when you get hurt," Crede said.
At the plate, Crede went 0-for-2. He struck out on a sharp breaking curve from Javier Vazquez.

larry beat you by an hour, bro
Dusty strikes again!!!!
Someone posted this yesterday
personally
What if...
Owens CF
OCab 2B
Thome DH
Konerko 1B
Dye RF
Swisher LF
AJ C
Crede 3B
Uribe 2B
Quentin OF
Fields 3B/DH
Ozuna
Hall C
Keeping Fields around lets him platoon at DH with Thome vs. LHP, and he can keep Crede rested at 3B. You can probably get him 400 PAs that way and keep him away from tough RHPs.
Richar (hellooooooo?) seems to have kissed his career goodbye, so there's no one's blocking him. The more I think about it, the more I think Crede stays.
400 PAs is a mighty high estimate for that role
3 starts a week = 400 PAs
Reinsdorf clearly
i'm not sure 3 starts a week equals 400
this is an awful, awful idea. doing something like this would be a reason that next year and future years are nightmares. there is next to nothing the sox can do to compete next year. let's not fuck up one of our few potential building blocks.
Larry,
Now we're already fucked next year? Oh my God!
Get to work on it, Pete.
right on my brother
Wouldn't be the first awful idea
I don't think player development is a concern this season, anymore than it was last year when Erstad was handed the CF job.
oh. trotting out the specious BA argument
The BA card
I think on a team this old, there
now we're replacing konerko and dye?
"this old" probably doesn't indicate
trying to test my hypothesis...
on top of that, PECOTA has the following attrition rates:
Konerko: 9% on 597 PAs (weighted mean)
Crede: 26% on 339
Dye: 19% on 490
Swisher: 8% on 633 (just for comparison's sake)
Quentin: 27% on 365
Owens: 25% on 424
Oh, assumptions: that Josh takes all the DH abs against LHP and is the first off the bench in case of injury/suckitude.
Okay, so do those weighted mean PAs pre-factor attrition? It looks like it, which makes it a lot easier. I'm thinking there are about 690 PAs per position. We would be able to do the subtraction, only attrition could occur jointly.
Bleh. I'm kinda stumped and tired. Doesn't it look like he'd be able to get 500 though?

He did this last year
I believe I saw some data that backed up his reasoning. Basically, there is an upgrade in the number of baserunners on base for the 2-3-4 hitters when there is a real hitter batting ninth, and that upgrade is larger than the drop off in offense that a typically happens in the 6-7-8 spots.
I think the main difference comes from the number of at-bats seen by the 2-3-4 hitters as compared to their 6-7-8 counterparts.
That TLaR's a genius
a guy presented this issue at the last SABR
.3 run increase from 4.3 runs/game
The interesting part (and the part dmost difficult to measure) is the credence the author puts n the "mental lift" given to the #9 hitter with another legit hitter protecting him. I believe I know the answer to this, but do you stat guys/girls buy any of that?
I saw that -
might want to look inside the numbers
Sure, but IIRC
You may be right - hard to devise a "control" group.
late in the year?
His stats deteriorated
That might help "anyone" figure it out. I just don't know how to retrieve those stats. Just speculating. But, frankly, if inserting one hot player (Ankiel) can shake things up that much, why would flipping 2 players not potentially change the run tally? Perhaps the improved performance of the #9 guy who was flipped might account for some of the difference. Then the question is - did the improved performance occur because of the flip, or was it happenstance? Can it be replicated over a longer period consistently?
This is what keeps me up at night.
since you need help
and i rather doubt
Coincidence - doubtful
Maybe the difference was all Ankiel, maybe not -that's the stat I'd like to see.

I just figured something out based upon
LaRussa = larry. Both are lawyers. Both think outside the box and have statistics at their fingertips at all times and minds like steel traps. It was the "LaR" part - "larry" - that cinched it.
Now it all makes sense.
