Spring Training Game #23: White Sox vs. Rockies -- Nick Masset vs. Ubaldo Jimenez

Time: 3:05 p.m. CT, TV: CSN, MLB.tv (Live Boxscore; MLB Gameday)

Sox: Ramirez, CF; Cabrera, SS; Thome, DH; Konerko, 1B; Swisher, LF; Fields, 3B; Anderson, B, RF; Ozuna, 2B; Hall, C

Rox: Taveras, CF; Tulowitzki, SS; Helton, 1B; Holliday, LF; Atkins, 3B; Stewart, DH; Baker, RF; Torrealba, C; Nix, 2B

Walker on Alexei:
"He's done some good things this spring, and to be honest with you, I'm a little shocked. ... He's definitely looking like he's more comfortable, and the one thing we all noticed is it looks like he's going to be an exceptional fastball hitter. We're sitting around watching him with the breaking ball, and he's shown he can handle that. He's very aggressive. You can tell he's played a lot of baseball."

Walker said he has yet to make any adjustments to the rookie's swing and doesn't know if he will have to. "It's very different but workable. He has a forward press early on, almost [Alfonso] Soriano-like. For a thin guy, he has big-time power. The only time he really loses his mechanics is when he tries to do too much and he comes in and out of it pretty violently. He's a max-effort guy, and that might be something we try to calm down later. But right now, we're just letting him play. He's a unique guy, that's for sure. And he runs great, which is nice to see some more speed out there. There's some big decisions that are going to be made in this camp, and as far as I'm concerned, he's in the mix."

I just heard this as well from a co-worker...
That means that we have to eat his $4.5 million, right?  And Ramirez is the 2B?

I don't like Uribe but this makes little sense
If you are going to pay him and dont see him as a starter.  Then pay him to be a utility guy.  But cutting him for nothing makes no sense.

Exactly, he has to be traded...
The Sox wouldn't eat $4.5 million instead of keeping him as a utility man on the bench.

keep in mind
1) i believe this is before the deadline for contracts such as uribe's becoming completely guaranteed; thus, it's possible that the sox may not be on the hook for all of it; 2) another team will almost certainly pick up uribe so that would also limit the amounts owed and; 3) perhaps most importantly, the sox may have simply "waived" juan, so they can still trade him, if that's the case.

by larry on Mar 19, 2008 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

by omnipotent grab on Mar 19, 2008 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well...
if you like Alexei Ramirez and want to see him get at-bats, this will (should) make you very happy.  As Cheat mentioned a few days ago, the Sox are going to do their damnedest to place Ramirez in a 'psuedo-starter' role, getting him as many at-bats as possible without having him be a full-time starter -- kind of like what Colin was suggesting the Sox do with Fields (or not suggesting, but just seeing if it was possible).

i didn't mean it was the correct move. i'm optimistic but not sure. but the sox obviously think ramirez is ready. i'm skeptical but, frankly, since i'm not sold on us competing i'd probably rather see ramirez up here getting full-time at bats than uribe.

meaning the Sox have 10 days to trade or release him.  It sounds like the Sox are hoping the Orioles claim Uribe and pick up his $4.5 million dollar contract.

unless this is a prelude to a deal
which it may very well be, this move certainly would signal a sea change in white sox organization thinking. obviously they think they've got something in ramirez and, i'd argue, richar eventually, and they're making the correct baseball decision to jettison uribe now and open up a spot for those guys. good.

Yes Master Po.

If they're releasing Uribe, they might as well release Crede.  They're both blocking better players.

by ChicagoPete on Mar 19, 2008 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i'm not sure the issue is blocking better players
i'd say the issue is players who are rather easily replaceable blocking players. crede has a slightly better track record than uribe - he's actually an average player and likely would be one this year. and uribe was blocking not one but probably two players. if alexei is getting time at 2B down in charlotte where's richar? and vice versa. i'd imagine their contingencies also made clear that ramirez, if he were in chicago, wouldn't be getting as much ABs if uribe was in the picture.

by larry on Mar 19, 2008 4:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, at this point
you can apply the same logic to Crede blocking Fields.  Sending Fields back down to AAA doesn't help him develop, and Crede is a DL waiting to happen.  I couldn't see the Sox eating Uribe's salary, I just can't see them eating Crede's too - but if there's no market for him, there's no market for him.  You're not going to bluff teams into thinking they need a one year rental of a creaky 3B with an average-at-best bat.

ozzie would never have used uribe as a sub...just like he'll never use jerry owens as a sub.

if KW is smart, he'll find a way to trade owens, ozuma and crede too.  it's the only way the kids will play.

what larry suggested?
[MLBTR]:
According to George Ofman WSCR 670 The Score out of Chicago, the White Sox are expected to place infielder Juan Uribe on outright waivers.  Ofman mentioned that this rumor is unconfirmed by the White Sox.  I believe this would give any team a chance to claim Uribe by taking on his $4.5MM salary.

The one team I've seen linked to Uribe is the Orioles, who currently have a need at shortstop and may have one at second if they trade Brian Roberts.

From Mark Gonzalez
Wow, I can't believe they're willing to eat his salary, very un-Sox like - I don't see anyone claiming him within 72hrs and taking on his payroll.  They needed to shake it up, I like this:
Uribe waived, another second baseman coming?

By Mark Gonzales, 3:18 p.m.

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The White Sox placed infielder Juan Uribe on waivers Wednesday, according to a major-league scout.

If Uribe is not claimed by another team in 72 hours, the Sox will have to release him and be obligated to pay his $4.5 million salary for 2007.

The news came after a lengthy meeting of the Sox staff Wednesday morning. Uribe was batting .333 and had a six-game hitting streak.

The move raises the possibility of the Sox acquiring a second baseman. Although Brian Roberts has been mentioned as a trade possibility, the Sox could be looking at another second baseman despite Baltimore's need for a shortstop. One possibility is Oakland's Mark Ellis.

An Orioles source said Wednesday the club's baseball staff wants to deal Roberts to fortify its entire system but has been held up by owner Peter Angelos, who is said to be fond of Roberts.

Uribe participated in morning drills and was playing dominoes with teammates before the clubhouse was closed ahead of Wednesday's game with Colorado.

Second baseman Danny Richar was scratched from the lineup because of back pain. Alexei Ramirez has impressed the Sox staff in his first spring training but is considered raw defensively.

The Sox, in accordance with major league rules, cannot comment on which players are on waivers.

Uribe moved to second after the Sox acquired Orlando Cabrera this off-season.

Mark Ellis would be sweet.
Let's get all my favorite Oakland players while we're at it. If Kenny can work a deal for Ellis, Blanton, and Huston Street I will cease all complaining. Forever.

How can Mark Gonzales think the Sox have any chips worth trading for Mark Ellis or Brian Roberts? Do people really regard Egbert/Broadway/anyone else in the system that highly? I mean, those are 2 good to very good 2B.

"Report: Sox place Uribe on waivers
Veteran has been competing to be Chicago's second baseman"
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Juan Uribe's run on the South Side of Chicago might have come to an end on Wednesday, according to a report first coming from The Score, 670 AM.

The White Sox flagship station announced that Uribe had been placed on waivers, meaning that if he's not claimed by another team in 72 hours, the team would have to release him and pay his $4.5 million salary in 2008.

In accordance with Major League rules, the White Sox are not allowed to comment on the rumor.

Uribe's agent, Martin Arburua, said he has not been informed of Uribe being waived.

"I haven't heard anything like that," Arburua told a pool of reporters. "Everything I've been told by the club was positive about Juan. I heard he was hitting well, playing great defense. That would be a shock."

Hey Ugly, you changed your diapers yet?
Even your gold shit the bed today, every friggin markets is wild - equities, debt, real estate, commodities, you name it.  The grain markets are topped out, I don't think your metals are far behind.  Brace yourself for a lot of violent action, coming to your theater soon!

These are the kinds of articles I warned about
More consumers turning gold keepsakes into cash.  When mom and pop are aware that gold is at $1,000, the party's over.

Not yet, Pete.
$1500 or bust. Then $2000+.

MAYBE a little washout before up again.

We have not had one big up day in gold forever - NOT ONE. Wait til it's up $100, three, four, five days in a row. Then maybe it's topped. But IMO still much upside left. Fed printing bucks at a feverish pace.

No, I don't think it's done yet
But you're gonna be on a rollercoaster from here on out if you sit through this, they're going to make you earn every penny going up from here.  This action today shows you how quick the longs are to bail out and take profit at the first sign that it might be over.

You gotta remember, there's no intrinsic value in gold, it's a pure speculative play.  It's not a reserve currency anymore or anything like that, it's a pure plaything.

Hedgies still liquidating
Their munis are gone - margin calls - and nothing else is profitable except international bonds and commodities.  Oil puled back more than gold today - so what?  I'm up 46% in the last 12 months in commodity funds, 36% in gold - a 4-5% pullback ain't no thang.

I'm waiting for more of a pulback and then will put more in my 401k.  For clients - 5% gold, 3% commodities, 6% managed futures re: asset allocation.

Gold is denominated in dollars, bro.  When the dollar falls, gold goes up.  Simple as that.  And the dollar will continue to fall. Wait until we lose our AAA govvie bond rating in 3-5 years, bro.  You'll be buying gold.

I agree that Ma and Pa Kettle usually act as contraindicators - and GLD has an incredible amount of $ in it compared to the amount of actual gold out there - but we're in a commodity bull run that's got 5-7 years left, minimum.  Metals are notoriously volatile, so enjoy the ride.

And bally wears the diapers around here.

Hey man, this game is a bunch of front-runners. If you're good, they kiss your butt. If not, you're horse s---.

10% of your portfolio eh?
I hope you have a strong stomach.  Margin on futures is 5%, that's 20/1 leverage - they don't fuck around.  You seen what wheat's been doing? I love that day last month, a $2.50 trading range ($10.00/bushel to $12.50) - they ran through a quarter of the price of the commodity in one day's trading, that would be like the DJIA swinging through a range of 3,000 pts in one day woohoo!  People get excited when the Dow moves 300pts, imagine that 10x.  And wheat is a market for a product that there's actually a use for it - you can eat it! As I mentioned gold is a pure speculator market, and a lot of money is moving into commodities now because that's where returns seem to be.  Once gold starts swinging it'll be even more extreme because there's no commercial hedgers to step in and dampen it.  Just commodity funds and cowboy traders pushing contracts around, should be a fun ride - strap in and enjoy!

Agreed
Overdue for a pullback (overshot on the upside), and it's doing what it's supposed to - be negatively correlated to the stock market's performance.  Until yesterday.  Stomach is plenty strong - I'm a Sox fan and post on this site, remember?

And, shoot, margin is the same on bonds.  And look how safe that's been.

;)

How's this for timing?  This article in today's NYT's, all about the hot money that's moved into the futures market in the past year.

Good - need more articles
on how unpoliced commodities/futures are.  Get the weak hands out.  "Doubled in the last 6 years", eh?  Wow, an annualized 12% return when equities have done more than 15%.

Nice.  And if retail folks are putting more than 4-6% of their portfolio in managed futures, or more than 5-10% in gold/commodities, they are knucleheads.

I'm with ya
I totally agree it's the place to be right now, IMO we're about to go into an inflationary cycle - that's why I'm not hesitating to buy more real estate, I'm locking in low fixed mortgages so I hope I should do alright by jacking up my rents on income properties to keep pace with inflation.  You want to be a borrower during inflation, not a lender.  Doubt that I'll see much if any real after-inflation appreciation the next ten years but I can deal with that.

But back to the goldie bars - up till now you've had a nice mellow little ride up in gold, from here on out they're going to grab you by the neck and shake you around hard the rest of the way.  I've traded in some wild grain markets in the past, it's always nice to have a cushion of the house's money to sit on when the market enters this kind of phase - this is not the point to be jumping in to establish a position.

"One thing about Cubans -- they don't like to be embarrassed," says Cora, a native of Puerto Rico.

by ChicagoPete on Mar 20, 2008 12:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely correct
So we'll add to existing positions in about another 5-10%.  I actually urped this AM and took some profits in GLD - not the commodity funds or futures, which actualy held up relatively well the past couple of days (only down 3-4%).

You're right - you'll be sitting for a long time on your RE, but if you have 10 years, why the heck not?  Equities won't do much better.  Just make sure you can keep up with the tax/insurance increases, bro.

As Friedman wrote, the world (market)is flat.

Ramirez
gets his first ball that he can look bad on... and does..

Doesn't take a direct route. Uses speed to make up for it. Gets a little scared of the wall, fails to come up with a backhand.

I don't know if it's a ball that Swisher gets to. Owens should get to it. Anderson would have had time to eat a sandwich on the way to get it.
