[Scott Merkin]:
Keep an eye on Henry Mabee, the closer for Great Falls in 2007. The right-hander, chosen in the 19th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, saved 18 games and posted a 1.88 ERA last year and is said to have one of the best curves in the entire system. The native of Victoria, British Columbia is targeted for Winston-Salem this season.
John Shelby will also start the year at Winston-Salem at 2nd base.

Your basic Buehrle inning.
2 hits, 1 BB, 0 runs.

No wonder the projection systems love him.

Was that a ground out to 2nd for Owens?

Ah hah
Plug in Thome at DH instead of MB batting 9th, and you're looking at your regular season starting lineup.  Probably Swish bats 5th between PK and JD and everyone else moves down in the order.

Let's forget about Uribe on waivers for now
What about McDougal?  10 days to go till opening day and he's in midseason form:  0.2 IP, 2 BBs.  He still has a AAA option doesn't he?  I think he's become an irremedial headcase.

add 1 H and 2 Rs (and counting) to that pitching line, still working on getting out of the inning.

Richar to go on DL
chicagosports.com reporting richar with stress fracture in rib.  Now left with Uribe, who may be gone; Ramirez, no MLB experience; and Ozuna, backup.

URIBE UPDATE: Uribe pulled off waivers...
Jow Cowley wrote:
The Sox placed Uribe on waivers Wednesday, and according to a source, pulled him back off waivers on Thursday to work out a trade with at least one team that showed interest. Talks were still ongoing and there is a chance that the trade has already fallen apart, but even manager Ozzie Guillen insisted before the game, "get back to me tomorrow,'' when asked about the ongoing Uribe saga.

Also at the link -- Danny Richar will be sidelined for 4 to 6 weeks with a stress fracture in the first rib on his left side.

Alexei Ramirez has made the opening day roster...
Scott Merkin wrote:
With Richar's extended absence, rookie Alexei Ramirez basically has made the team. His official capacity will be decided over the final few days in Arizona.

"Is he on the roster? Yes. The thing is how many games can he play?" said manager Ozzie Guillen when asked about the Cuban émigré before Thursday's first official Cactus League contest against the Dodgers. "We're going to sit down and see how many at-bats he can get. We're talking about that.

"Whether it's at second base or not second base. Everything is about playing time. My thing is, I don't care if this kid sits for 10 days if he's going to help us win.

"Development? I'm not going to develop my players for someone else. I already learned my lesson," Guillen added. "Jeff Torborg developed players [in Florida], and he got [beat up]. Jack McKeon won. To me, development, that's for the Minor League system. You bring the best guys. Me and [general manager] Kenny [Williams] have talked, and we want the best guys at every position."

not the switch again!
[Joe Cowley]:
Ozzie Guillen: "You're not going to flip the switch on just like that. I know what kind of club I have and that's why I'm a little disappointed with the way we've played the last couple of games.''

The dreaded"flip the switch."
And only 10.5 days before the opener.

It seems like yesterday that Hawk and DJ were opining that THIS was the best, hardest working, most focused Spring camp in their 200+ combined years of being around Spring camps.

Its a long season, there's plenty of games left. If we get to 95 that will put us in the playoffs

Jerry Owens today, 2 - 4?
That's 2 ground balls to the 2nd baseman.

However, one was turned into a 4-6-3 DP.

So what's the ruling? When I start tallying my signature in the regular season, is JO 2 - 4 today?

Jonathan Sanchez and a couple of Class-A prospects
[Scott Miller @ cbssports]:
In a perfect world, the Giants acquire a corner infielder infielder before opening day. They've been talking to the White Sox about third baseman Joe Crede forever, but the White Sox, according to sources, want left-hander Jonathan Sanchez and a couple of Class-A prospect in return -- a price San Francisco thinks is too steep. They've spoken with Detroit about Brandon Inge, but the Tigers won't absorb any of Inge's salary and the Giants' payroll is at budget, especially with the $20 million annual mortgage they pay on AT&T Park.

by The Wizard on Mar 20, 2008 8:43 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kenny is..
Holding Crede hostage. Let The Giants and Dodgers get in a bidding war over Joe C. I would like the outcome of that.

Just because you (theoretically) have
multiple bidders, doesn't mean you're going to get rich... I mean, I only buy stuff off of eBay when it's below retail, and there's always multiple bidders there.

Why move him for garbage though?
We're only paying him 5 million, no need to just send him off for nothing.  If we're looking at just some garbage A level prospects might as well keep Crede and let him play defense to make up for OCab inability to move to the right.
I'd rather have Fields with the big club but it's not like he hit .300 last year he could still use some improvement himself.

If no one will give Kenny anything serviceable I say keep the guy and wait till Thome, Konerko or Crede go down with an injury (not unlikely for one of them to get on the DL) and bring Fields up then.  Not to mention, maybe a playoff contendor's 3B get's hurt.  Crede becomes a bit more valuable at that point I'd think.

Fields...
Surely could use improvement, but is he really going to get it facing AAA pitching again???

If only we had a coach like this:
Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long, who helped revitalize Alex Rodriguez last season, also is making a difference for Ensberg, who is batting .313 with five doubles in 32 at-bats this spring.
If Morgan Ensberg doesn't stay in pinstripes, he could be in blue. (Eliot J. Schechter / Getty Images)

"It's shocking," Ensberg says. "Everything he does is so simple. He gets rid of all of your excess motions, gets you down to a good foundation.

"I used to be a guy with eight different stances and eight different hand positions. Now I'm down to one. And it took only one session, one 15-minute deal in the batting cage.

"This is the most consistent 3-4 weeks of an approach I've had in my life."

I never understood the whole...
hand positions... foot stances... deal, anyway. Walk up to the plate, step into the batter's box. Raise the bat up, and swing at the ball.

Simple, right? :)

I'm sorry, but this is a foreign concept to me.

Time for some hefty reevaluation.
