Spring Training Game #25: White Sox @ Giants -- Gavin Floyd vs. Barry Zito

Time: 3:05 p.m. CT, TV: CSN, MLB.tv, Radio: MLB.radio (Live Boxscore; MLB Gameday)

Sox: Owens, CF; Cabrera, SS; Swisher, LF; Konerko, 1B; Dye, RF; Pierzynski, C; Fields, 3B; Ramirez, 2B; Floyd, P

Giants: Lewis, LF; Velez, 2B; Winn, RF; Rowand, CF; Aurilia, 3B; Ortmeier, 1B; Holm, C; Burriss, SS; Zito, P

*****
Ozzie on having his 25-man roster named by next Thursday:
''I want to get to the point where I can relax and have a couple of beers, get my liver ready to go for the season. I don't want to think about who is the guy that should be ready to play. When you have a winning team, you should know who will be on your team before you take off.''
and Ozzie when asked if the shoulder problem that has slowed outfielder Carlos Quentin during spring training would land him on the DL:
''I have to be careful with him because he is coming off surgery, and this is a kid that is going to be with us a long time. At least, that is the expectation.''

regarding the comic strip of team hilarity
¡Viva Don Juan!

do any other teams have a carl? he's been doing his thing so well for so long, i'm kind of surprised he doesn't have any swag links or ads on the site. the boy deserves to make a buck off of his work. it's consistently fantastic.

i know he's got the daily southtown reprint gig, but i'm still dreading the day his talents get noticed outside of whitesoxistan and along comes an offer he can't refuse. or he gets tired of entertaining us all.

you are correct, sir.
new era's 3930 line is ST only for the pros.

i still stand behind my statement, however.

Should the ball have been caught?

With a proper read and a full-speed run
yes. It was a ball Anderson and Owens should have. Alexei too (in time).

The ball seems to be carrying exceptionally well today, and has caught a couple of guys by surprise.

Bonds
Does someone take a flier now that it looks like, according to ESPN, there won't be a trial until at least 2009?

Boy, this guy Zito is good.
Almost in the category of CC, Johan, etc. where "I don't know why we even play these games."

Rowand ups the bar
DJ says he gives 120 percent.  How's Erstad going to retaliate?

They also said
that this more like the Giant's B team today, probably due to the absence of Roberts, Vizquel, and Durham. But they neglected to acknowledge that there isn't exactly a drop-off then the A team consists of Roberts, Vizquel, and Durham.

Floyd looks good today.
4 Ks, 0 BBs.

Worried about the comment a few days ago about him being a head case in HS of college.

Doesn't bode well for a professional athlete.

Guess it depends on what type of head case - psycho vs. self esteem.

Sox want Juan gone
The White Sox's wish for one of the other 29 teams to claim Juan Uribe and thus pick up Uribe's entire $4.5 million salary is a long shot at best. But the move to put him on waivers left little doubt Chicago would like to be rid of its former starting shortstop who's logged a lot of time at second base this spring. Whether they'd take the drastic step to release Uribe isn't known, but the hope appears to be that they can still work out a trade, even if they have to pay half or more of Uribe's salary. Uribe's placement on the waivers was first reported by 620, The Score, the White Sox' flagship station.

One White Sox-connected person insisted they could still wind up using Uribe as their starter at second, but others believe the White Sox have determined he doesn't really fit. Cuban import Alexei Ramirez (.366 this spring) has won fans in the organization this spring with a strong offensive showing and obvious athleticism, but a scout on another team said he believes Ramirez isn't quite ready. That scout said, "He needs to go down to the minors to learn how to play.''

I agree.
"He needs to go down to the minors to learn how to play.''

If only for 6 weeks to 2 months. Acclimate to the US, consistent ABs, less stress, etc. Not so much to "learn how to play.

"Learn how to play"
That's a little harsh.  If the alternative is watching Juan Uribe at 2B, I'd rather have Ramirez "learn how to play" with the big league club.

Besides, there are no Cubans in Charlotte.

no cubans?
maybe. but they do have taste of havana there. should put him right at home.

that reminds me, take a look at some of the crap getting a look for charlotte. sooey, pig!
