In which Cheat gets meta

I didn't get a chance to follow Tuesday's game on Gameday, so there's not much I can add to the stories from the beat guys. Jose Contreras seems to be pitching like a happily-divorced man, which is about the best we can hope for from the old guy. Brian Anderson continues to play a lot (perhaps he's being showcased?) and, as has become his custom, is hitting well in Arizona. But not much else happened worth noting. Though I am beginning to worry about one Jack Egbert, who has yet to see game action and hasn't been heard from since the early mention of elbow soreness at the beginning of camp. Maybe we should fire off an email to one of the beat guys; I'm looking at you [insert screen name].

I can see the future.

The Stone Rises

Steve Stone will take over for Chris Singleton in the radio booth, which is the broadcasting equivalent of upgrading from Jerry Owens to Curtis Granderson. Stone is not without his faults, however. He raved about Nick Masset even after he was optioned to Charlotte last season, and has been quick to praise Jerry Owens since officially being named to the radio booth. But complaining about those faults would be like complaining that Granderson was left-handed (like Owens) or struck out too much.

It will be interesting to hear how the new dynamic unfolds in the booth. Stone is an excellent color guy, which is the role Farmer held while part of the excellent Sox booth with John Rooney. I don't mind Farmer in the play-by-play role, but he needs a strong voice to keep him reigned in, a service that Singleton never was able to provide. Stone figures to be that guy, as he was able to hold his own in a booth with Harry Caray and performed the impressive task of making Harry's grandson somewhat bearable. BELTED!

The Sox radio booth just got a whole lot more listenible. Now how about that line-up...

Meta

As you probably already know by now, we should be making a shift to a new platform relatively soon. I'm not 100% sure on the timeline, but I hope we're able to make the shift before Opening Day. Hopefully with a few days to spare. Fingers crossed. You can view a working, if not fully operational, version of the platform at Athletics Nation. (The strength of the new platform wont really be on display until multiple sites are up and running and real games have begun.)

With the upcoming transition, I wanted to discuss some ideas on how to improve the blog, as long as the changes don't involve, you know, removing the power hungry overlord from his post atop this ship. I have my own ideas, but I'm open to shooting down suggestions.

First, one change that will be happening; more front page posters. I wrote only a handful of recaps after June last year, in part because I just couldn't bring myself to write the same damn thing night after night. In order to avoid the same from happening again, and because I expect to be watching fewer games this season due to a more unpredictable schedule, I'll need a couple of people who can fill in semi-regularly, with some notice.

In addition to having some fill-ins for game recaps, I was hoping I might be able to find a poster who is willing to do an semi-regular piece, related to baseball, of course, to fill some of the dead time on weekends and off-days. I've also been toying with the idea of having the occasional Q&A-type post, not just with myself, but with other posters as well, a Better Know Your Virtual Neighbor type of thing.

Finally, I think we need a morning guy. I'm unable to get to a computer on most mornings, and Wiz's posting schedule overlaps my own too much. We'll still keep Wiz around -- 'Dis keed, he been reel good for us' -- but we need someone with a more complimentary schedule for a mid-morning post covering whatever I missed from the night before, interesting links from around the web, quotes, etc

Ideally, those roles could be filled by 2-3 of our more regular posters. If you're interested in helping make South Side Sox even more awesomer -- as if that was possible -- have a passable knowledge of HTML (or are willing to learn), and a solid posting record here, drop me an email. Please include your screen name, the role you'd like to help fill, and a $75 processing fee in your response. I'm just kidding about the processing fee, but this was starting to sound like a legitimate job posting. Let me assure you this is not a job, it's slavery. I don't make anything more than pennies doing this, which is why...

You probably have noticed some semi-obnoxious new ads in the last 24 hours. Those will not be conveying to the new platform. I just got an invite to a new Chicago-based ad network, and I wanted to see what it looked like and how it performed. It might stick around until we move or it might disappear tomorrow. I just wanted to make a note that they're only temporary.

Anyway, I've gotten long-winded here, and I still have yet to address our possible get-together. Have fun getting all meta in the comments.

SSS Spring Training Viewing Party

I'm going to leave this one up to you guys. Are we going to get together on the 15th to watch the Cubs-Sox game, and celebrate the vast return from the Joe Crede/Brian Anderson/Juan Uribe/Mike MacDougal/Nick Massett trade(s)? Is Miller's Pub the best place for such an event? From what I remember of the place, it didn't seem like a venue where a group larger than 6 would be comfortable. But who knows, that might be enough. Let's get a roll call going of likely attendees, and decide what works best for the majority of that select group.

Uh-oh.  I'm going to be home during that time -- do they let children into these "bars"?  And if so, the question becomes...  who's going to buy me a kiddie cocktail?

One more thing re: the new design
Like Larry, I'm not terribly fond of the avatars.  It's really not that big of a problem, mind you -- the overall layout looks good.  I particularly like the emphasis on the diaries with the new tab (among other tabs) at the top -- but it's kind of obnoxious.  I imagine those will be making there way over here as well?

Mar. 15...
As I recall, Miller's "Bill Veeck Corner" includes all the window seating as well as the East end of the bar.  That space should be big enough for 15 or so, more (obviously) if there are standees.
The only possible drawback to Millers is the St. Patty's Day pukefest (as Larry pointed out).  The parade is deep in Grant Park at noon, but a few hours later may see some drunk stragglers.  I doubt they'd be a factor, but it is something to consider.
Given its history, my vote would be to do it there.

Cheat: re BA...
You've made a couple of comments lately about Anderson being an ST HOFer (Masset too I think.)
But is that really fair?  Maybe it was in '06, but after winning a roster spot in '07 with a solid, even good, ST is it fair to say he didn't produce?  If the main purpose of ST is to prepare for the season, how could BA be expected to continue his ST offense with only 17 April ABs?

Not saying you're wrong about BA, just trying to keep a perspective...

handshake dances and the pernicious cactus league losing streak.
And just wait until Sox fans see some of the antics he has planned for home runs. Without giving away too much, keep an eye on the dugout after Swisher goes deep this season. The handshake dances he has been working on with several teammates will be instant classics
he had a chat with manager Ozzie Guillen before Tuesday's eventual 7-6 win over the Angels, just to let his manager know that three-consecutive Cactus League losses were unacceptable. I repeat - Cactus League losses.
"That's what we bring him here for,'' Guillen said of Swisher after the game. "He's a real good baseball player. He knows about his job, and he's the type of guy we need on the field and off the field. He keeps everyone loose, but in the meanwhile, a lot of people misunderstand him because he's a goofy-loosey guy. When the game is on the line, he's all about business.''

I am he who speaks of the Golden Bear
To be quite honest, I've never watched a Sox game there. I was relaying information from another Bay Area Sox fan I met at the Golden Bear while watching the Bears dominate (or squeak by) in the 06-07 NFL season. Good times.

I will, however, be testing this Sox game legend of the Golden Bear in April and report back with all of the fascinating information I am sure to gather.

As a blanket statement, most sports bars I've been to are more than willing to channel surf for you if the rest of the bar isn't already watching something else on that TV. I like Zeke's in SF (SoMa) as they seem to be cool and have good food. That's also a good place to watch NFL games.

There are some bars out in the Haight and Richmond districts that would probably put games on for you as well, but I can't think of their names at the moment. I'll have to get back to you on that one.

If you are looking for a place to watch games with other Sox fans, then you'll probably want to join the Bay Area SSS spring training meeting that we are putting together on (date TBD) at (place TBD). It should be a good time.

i'm curious about this owens poll
who is voting for an OBP less than .350? and why?

by larry on Mar 5, 2008 11:25 AM CST reply actions

i think
i voted .340 because i dont think he'll get to .350 or above and we're going to have to learn to love him now that hes our CF/Leadoff position hitter no matter what. i think i was just trying to hope for something realistic, and im not even sure .340 is realistic.

by The Deacon on Mar 5, 2008 11:29 AM CST up reply actions

so people are misreading
or at least reinterpreting the question. i see. because i think everyone should be aware that less than .350 is not acceptable from a player in the leadoff position, especially when they don't add anything else via slugging.

Acceptable to whom?
What was the combined leadoff OBP for us last year?  Was .340 better than that?  Who do we have that would serve that function (and I would not mind Swish hitting leadoff, so suggestions other than that) with that history?

Has anyone gone to the playoffs with someone leading off with a .340 OBP?

(As you might guess, I was one of the voters becuase I thought .340'd be an improvement from last year.  I'm all about improvement.)

I wrote this song after I killed a drifter to get an erection.

by winningugly on Mar 5, 2008 11:44 AM CST up reply actions

well
obviously it's a short poll question and people are free to interpret it how they please. i was just wondering what the thought process behind it was.

and i'm sure quite a few teams have gone to the playoffs with a .340 or less player in the leadoff position. the 2002 cardinals come immediately to mind.

by larry on Mar 5, 2008 11:48 AM CST up reply actions

look no further
than the reigning world series champions.

the '07 red sox leadoff hitters rocked out with a .329 OBP for the season (to go along with a .384 SLG for .713 OPS).

"They say that blood is thicker than water. What we have is thicker than blood."

by Toonderstrook on Mar 5, 2008 11:55 AM CST up reply actions

was that just a result
of leaving lugo in that spot for too damn long?? because youk is an OBP machine, and i know he got thrown in there for a while and pedroia's OBP was legit too, but im not sure how much he hit leadoff.
12/12/07- We'll miss you Andy Gonzalez

by The Deacon on Mar 5, 2008 12:00 PM CST up reply actions

lugo
ended up with over half of the leadoff plate appearances (394 of 783) and posted a .286 OBP there. youkilis had 0 PA in the leadoff hole.  pedroia, crisp, and ellsbury all posted OBP of .365 or better in their combined 300+ PA.

regardless of why it was that low, the question was whether teams with .340 or less OBP at the top make it to the playoffs.

"They say that blood is thicker than water. What we have is thicker than blood."

.340
would i be pleased with a .340 OBP from sox leadoff hitters? yes if its comprised of O-Cab and JO.  if Swisher is in the leadoff spot, then no, .340 wont cut it because obviously thats fairly low for his career averages. but like you WU, i would be happy with improvement from last year.

aspiring to the halcyon days
before teams figured out that OBP in the leadoff spot was kinda important, eh.

by larry on Mar 5, 2008 12:04 PM CST up reply actions

more fun facts! woo!
turns out the last three AL representatives in the world series, including the '05 white sox, had an OBP of .340 or less from the leadoff spot.

'07 BOS .329
'06 DET .336
'05 CWS .338

the '06 AL Central winning Twins were also below .340 at .336.

"They say that blood is thicker than water. What we have is thicker than blood."

by Toonderstrook on Mar 5, 2008 12:10 PM CST up reply actions

that's not entirely surprising
we've talked about the bosox. those other teams just had rather crappy replacements to put into the leadoff position when their main guys (granderson and pods) weren't in. curtis was about .345 when leading off, iirc. pods already discussed.

.340 would be excellent for a back-up/occassional leadoff hitter. which is what jerry should be.

by larry on Mar 5, 2008 12:13 PM CST up reply actions

agreed.
and if you look at those teams, they had a whole lot else working in the favor.  in my opinion, the '08 white sox don't stand a chance at making the playoffs if jerry owens is the everyday leadoff hitter getting on at a .340 clip unless he recently began using "flaxseed oil" supplements.
"They say that blood is thicker than water. What we have is thicker than blood."

by Toonderstrook on Mar 5, 2008 12:19 PM CST up reply actions

I was wondering that too
while having flashbacks to Ray Durham.  His OBP was all over the map with the Sox, but he OPSd in the 800s thx to his doubles (mostly).  Unless JO can achieve at least a .350 OBP, he's worthless batting 1st.  Just doesn't have enough power to compensate.
I'd rather see Swisher there.
Next time, Bhoov, do some research.

Scott Podsednik
led the 2005 Chicago White Sox  to the World Series Championship with an OBP of .351.

What more evidence is needed?

Was that a ground out to 2nd for Owens?

by ballyb on Mar 5, 2008 12:06 PM CST up reply actions

a couple of the differences i see are that
one, podsednik was clearly one of the three best outfield options on the sox in '05. so yes he had an OBP and the sox won the division and the world series. but if there would have been a better option, i.e. someone who would likely have the same or better OBP and certainly would slug a lot better, that player should have been on the field regardless that the sox were winning with pods' .351 OBP with no power.

second, the impact of the sox offense in '05 can't easily be equated to '08 due to the tremendous pitching the sox got in '05 that likely won't be equalled this season.

"They say that blood is thicker than water. What we have is thicker than blood."

by Toonderstrook on Mar 5, 2008 12:47 PM CST up reply actions

The question was "acceptable"
not "World Series Championship-worthy".  Agree with your posts re: pitching and the reasons sub-.350 works sometimes but we're talking "acceptable".

For me, an substantive improvement over last year (anyone have those figres for our
leadoff "position" last year?)is "acceptable".

don't worry
maybe penn state or northwestern will do a number on my badgers. (but don't count on it).

to answer your question, the sox had a .321 OBP from the leadoff spot last year.

i understand your point regarding what you view as acceptable, i.e., an improvement. but to me it's also  tied up in the bigger questions of "do you think jerry owens should be playing?" and "what are the alternative to jerry owens playing every day and getting the most plate appearances on the white sox?" so my view of what an acceptable OBP from Owens would change depending on the alternatives. for instance, if (insert somebody worse than jerry owens here) were the next best alternative to owens, i'd say a lower OBP is acceptable, and if ichiro was an alternative it would take a hell of a lot higher OBP from owens to be acceptable. clearly, to me at least, right now we're somewhere in the middle and i think owens needs to get on at a far higher clip than .340 unless he suddenly finds some cork in the bat to make it acceptable for him to play over quentin.

.340 as a 4th OF?
I find that acceptable.  .350 might not even be enough as a starter depending on the other stuff.
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.

reds give $2m bonus to 16-year old dominican OF
[Ben Badler]:
The international signing period is still four months away, but the Reds have already made a big splash in the Dominican Republic, giving a $2 million signing bonus to 16-year-old outfielder Juan Duran, a player who many thought would not be eligible to sign until July 2.
...
Duran, who bats and throws righthanded and checks in at roughly 6-foot-6, 190 pounds, likely will not play a game this year in the PL, however, where at 16 years old he would be by far the youngest player in the league. The Reds cannot assign him to the Gulf Coast League, since the GCL season ends on Aug. 27, so sending him to the GCL would void his contract.

fields to go bald
[Robert Feder]:
Patrick Elwood, morning news anchor at Fox-owned WFLD-Channel 32, heads to Arizona this week to pick up a check from the White Sox and shave the head of third baseman Josh Fields.

It's all to promote Channel 32's support of pediatric cancer research via the St. Baldrick's Foundation.

On March 14 (St. Baldrick's Day), Elwood will join thousands of volunteers in shaving their heads to raise money for 220 cancer hospitals nationwide.

masset, haeger to start friday's games
[Joe Cowley]:
Pitcher Javier Vazquez was back in Puerto Rico on Tuesday for the birth of his third child, a girl. Vazquez probably will miss his scheduled start Friday, with Masset and Charlie Haeger likely to start the split-squad games.

make it masset and broadway
[Scott Merkin]:
Javier Vazquez will miss his next scheduled start on Friday to be with his wife and newborn daughter. Nick Masset will start in Tucson against the Diamondbacks, while Lance Broadway gets the call in Tempe against the Angels. ... Jack Egbert, sidelined by inflammation near his right elbow, could see Cactus League action by the middle of next week. ... Thursday's "B" game against the Rockies will feature Pablo Ozuna leading off and playing short, Alexei Ramirez at second, Josh Fields at third and Jason Bourgeois in center.

owens, quentin shut down
[Dave van Dyck]:
The White Sox have shut down outfielders Jerry Owens and Carlos Quentin for at least "a couple of days" because of injuries, according to manager Ozzie Guillen.

Owens, who has taken the early lead as leadoff man/center fielder, continues to be bothered by a nagging groin pull that has bothered him for several days.

"I don't like the way he was running the bases," Guillen said. "The key for him is his legs and we have to keep those legs fresh. ... There's no reason for him to go out there and hurt himself again. All of a sudden a minor injury could become a big injury. We learned that from having [Scott] Podsednk. Pods would go from a little soreness to a big deal."

so it doesn't get lost on the gamethread

jose's arm angles
[Scott Merkin]:
Jose Contreras considers his normal arm angle as kind of sidearm, but dropping down too low in 2007 cost the big right-hander in the velocity department. Following Tuesday's strong effort against the Angels, in which Contreras allowed one earned run over three innings, Contreras indicated he intended to continue mixing up angles but also wanted to keep his delivery a little higher in 2008.

"I want to pitch more three-quarters or higher," Contreras said through translator Henry Madrid. "This year I'm working on three-quarters, regular angle and down a little more. I'm trying to keep the pitches right in the zone."

Regardless of the angle, Guillen has been impressed with the way Contreras has thrown the ball in Arizona. Contreras was clocked between 91-93 mph on Tuesday, leading Guillen to believe his late January SoxFest prediction of Contreras being able to bounce back from a subpar 2007 campaign is off to a great start.

"Outstanding. This is the best I've see him throw in a little while," Guillen said of Contreras. "We bring him out of that bullpen late last year and he tried to get it back together.

"Jose has been more aggressive since Spring Training [started]. I think we sent a message to him how we want him to get it done, from the beginning be aggressive, and see what happens."
