The movie did not suck, not at all, that's the wrong word and that's a story for tomorrow. The story for today is how we even got here. It is about a man who is not really in the movie. No actor plays him. He's mentioned in the movie here and there, but only for a a few seconds. Still, without him, there is no Moneyball. There is no Sabermetrics, at least not under that name. Certainly people would still be looking for objective knowledge in baseball -- people were looking long before Bill James and they will look long after. But without the life's work of Bill James, they sure as heck would not have made a movie out of it.

Last year, when there was NOT a man on on second, runners on first scored 42.6% of the time on a double. When there was a guy on second, runners from first scored 45.3%. You read that right, there is no such thing as clogging the bases.

There's a baseball brouhaha on the Internet, stoked by Bugs and Cranks' contention that Bill James "thinks steroids fueled the Twins' two championship." James didn't say that... What he said, in the Bill James Gold Mine, was that Kirby Puckett's and Gary Gaetti's years in 1984 were two of the greatest "underproducers" relative to their careers. He then went on, "Suggesting the possibility that the Twins' two World Championships may have been aided by their team being among the first to discover ... well, I'd better not go there. Nor will I point out that Gaetti was bald and had acne and Puckett died young."

This may seem technical to some, but James didn't say that "he thought" the Twins took steroids. He threw the "suggesting..." comment in there. It is irresponsible of Bugs and Cranks to post a headline that says he did. Further, you can easily interpret James' remarks to be ironic and poking fun at those who see steroids in every quirky year.

Irresponsible headlines like that give blogs a bad name.
