[Update] Bobby Jenks has MRI: No Structural Damage

An MRI on Bobby Jenks' right calf revealed inflammation but no structural damage, and the Chicago White Sox closer will try to pitch through the injury. "That's the odd part of the injury," Jenks said on Sunday. "They say it can't get any worse. It's like you have a sore arm and you're working through it." Jenks said he is OK when he is throwing the ball, but he feels some discomfort when he tries to pivot after delivering a pitch in order to field a ground ball or cover first base. "I irritated it the day I was supposed to throw," Jenks said. "As for the results of the MRI, it turns out it's a good report. There is some irritation in there but it's not structural damage."

MacDougal DFAed; Egbert Recalled

White Sox Further Pare Roster; Jerry Owens Waived

The White Sox optioned pitcher Jeff Marquez to Triple-A Charlotte. Marquez started the spring as a potential starter. Outfielder Josh Kroeger and pitcher Randy Williams were reassigned to minor league camp, and pitchers Lance Broadway and Jack Egbert were optioned to Charlotte. Infielder Jayson Nix was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to March 17. [larry: these moves appear to pave the way for mike macdougal to make the opening day bullpen, along with dj carrasco and clayton richard, and for dewayne wise to be the opening day leadoff hitter and CF.]

Derek Rodriguez Returned to White Sox

BRADENTON—Derek Rodriguez, the reliever the Rays selected from the White Sox in the Rule 5 draft at the winter meetings in December, is headed back to the Chicago organization. With no chance of making Tampa Bay’s Opening Day roster, Rodriguez was offered back to the White Sox and they accepted, paying $25,000 (half of what the Rays paid to select him) to take him back. Rodriguez made five Grapefruit League appearances for the Rays, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs in six innings.

Marquez Hurt: If He Dies, He Dies. (Spoiler: He Lives)

By Mark Gonzales PHOENIX - Jeff Marquez left Friday's game in the seventh inning after tweaking his right hamstring. Marquez, competing for a spot on the Sox's staff, was covering first base when he reached for a throw and felt his leg tighten. Marquez went to the trainer's room and said he would talk after treatments.

Phillies Bullpen to have own reality show on MLBN

This won't be reality TV like many people know it. There won't be any rose ceremonies or immunity challenges or Flavor Flav surprise drop-ins. MLB Productions has been in Phillies camp the past week shooting footage for the debut episode of "The Pen," an inside look at the Phillies' bullpen, which is scheduled to debut June 1 on MLB Network. It will be MLB Network's first original programming. "I think it'll be pretty neat," righty reliever Clay Condrey said.

Shocker: Sox may carry 12 pitchers

Starting positions are open at second base and center field, but the competition to merely land a backup spot could intensify if the White Sox carry a 12-man pitching staff.

Clayton Richard Optioned to Charlotte

I'll link the press release when it's available. The Sox will make a corresponding roster move before Tuesday's game. Though I'm not 100% sure that move will be Jose Contreras. I have a feeling DeWayne Wise will be moved to clear a spot for Jose later this week, and tomorrow's move will be for a reliever.

Best ‘Pen in the Bigs

by Eric Seidman Following a recent sweep by the Cubs at Wrigley Field, the White Sox last night got revenge by completing a sweep of their fellow Chicagoans on their own South Side turf. The 5-1 win gave the White Sox a 46-35 record and kept them in first place by 1.5 games over the Minnesota Twins. One of the key ingredients to their success this year has been the bullpen. Joe Morgan discussed how valuable they have been this year and the numbers back it up. The White Sox bullpen currently has an MLB-best 2.61 ERA and has done so in 213.2 innings, a number lower than everyone except the Anaheim Los Angeles Californian Angels of Los Anaheim. The relief corps has not been called upon an exorbitant amount of time thanks in large part to the White Sox starting staff and their league leading 50 quality starts. That means in 62% of their games so far the bullpen hasn’t even gotten to rear its head until the seventh inning or later. Overall, the White Sox have an MLB best 3.39 team ERA, and have walked just 227 batters—2.8 per game—which ranks second only to the Twins and their 198 free passes. Here are the five major components of the White Sox bullpen and their numbers: ...

Cowley: Russell called up

And the winner is .... Adam Russell. The reliever is with the team for the time being.
