White Sox and the Amateur Draft

"ARLINGTON, Texas — With the amateur draft less than two weeks away, scouting director Doug Laumann believes a deep, pitching-heavy draft will enable the White Sox to get some "pretty good players" despite not having a pick until No. 47. "I've eliminated 20 to 25 guys," said Laumann, who won't have a first-round pick because of the free-agent signing of Adam Dunn. "The claim that people are saying this is the best draft in 20 years, I don't have a great feel for. But at 47, I feel there are a lot of quality guys who will be there around the second, third and fourth rounds."

Fangraphs Top 50 AL Prospects

Flowers #20 Hudson #33 Highest I've seen for either for them, especially Flowers, who seemed to be sliipping in other recent lists.

Baseball America Top 100 Prospects and Diamond Futures Top Prospects (#100 - #51)

Baseball America Mitchelll #55 Flowers #60 Hudson #66 Surprised to see Mitchell so high, and above Flowers and Hudson. I guess if you're looking at highest possible upside, he could be the best of the three. Diamond Futures Hudson #79 MItchell #83 Viciedo #90 HIghtest I've ever seen for Viciedo (who comes out ahead of Eric Hosmer, Austin Jackson, and Jake Arrieta, for example). Seems slightly low for Hudson. Presumably Flowers is in the top 50.

Brandon Allen Promoted to AAA Charlotte; Jordan Danks to the Birmingham DL

The injury to Danks is likely the hand/wrist injury he suffered on a HBP a few games back. Daniel Hudson, Christian Marrero and Lee Cruz promoted to Birmingham. Brian Omogrosso's promotion to Charlotte is also confirmed. Winston-Salem gets Tyler Kuhn, Justin Edwards and Seth Loman. Update on Kannapolis: Kenny Williams Jr. back off the DL. Luis Sierra and Murillo Gouvea join from extended spring training.

Gordon Beckham getting second look

No need for a second take. That really is Gordon Beckham's name penciled in at second base for the White Sox' exhibition game today against Australia's World Baseball Classic team. Does that mean we can add a new name to the position battle with the camp's biggest logjam? Not so fast, says manager Ozzie Guillen, who insists his prized prospect remains a shortstop. The highly touted first-round pick (eighth overall) from last June's draft belted his second home run of spring training Thursday in a 5-4 split-squad loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Glendale, Ariz. Afterward, bench coach Joey Cora revealed that Beckham will be making some cameos around the infield.

10 Questions with White Sox Prospect Aaron Poreda

I recently asked former High School teammate, and White Sox top prospect Aaron Poreda 10 questions about everything from his expectations for the season to the daily life during Spring Training.

Sickels' Top 20 White Sox Prospects

1) Gordon Beckham, SS, Grade B+: Very advanced prospect with across-the-board skills. Could get to A- next year. 2) Aaron Poreda, LHP, Grade B+: Power lefty was a bit more polished than anticipated. Does he start or relieve? 3) Tyler Flowers, C, Grade B: Impressive power bat acquired in Vasquez(sic) deal. 4) Brandon Allen, 1B, Grade B- [edit]: Enormous raw power, but high strikeout rate is concerning. 5) Dayan Viciendo (sic), 3B, Grade B- [edit]: Wild guess on grade and rating. Scouting reports indicate Angel Villalona type, but who knows? 6)Clayton Richard, LHP, Grade C+: Throws strikes, nice sinker, not a big margin for error. 7) Jordan Danks, OF, Grade C+: Excellent tools, played well in pro debut, and I still think he can show some power eventually. 8) Chris Getz, 2B, Grade C+: Nice contact hitter, should be useful but not a star. 9) John Shelby, OF, Grade C+: Good tools, has speed and power, but strike zone judgment may hold him back. 10) Jose Martinez, OF, Grade C+: Good tools, season cut short by knee injury. Will power come? 11) Brent Morel, 3B, Grade C+: Nice debut. Joe Randa type?

Updated White Sox Top 10 Prospects: Baseball America

The White Sox Top 10 has undergone some significant renovations since we first released it. We update the lists in the Prospect Handbook with transactions through mid-December, and Chicago's has three new faces in Viciedo and two former Braves, catcher Tyler Flowers and shortstop Brent Lillibridge. GM Kenny Williams loves to wheel and deal, so we may not be done making changes. Clickthru for ranking goodness
