"First thing they did was trade Tony Perez before the '77 season. They figured that Dan Driessen was ready to be the everyday first baseman (and he had a very good 1977 season) but the general feeling among players on that team is that they lost a lot when Perez was traded. For one thing, he was the most respected player on that team. And for another, I think the general feeling was that when Perez was traded that management no longer cared about keeping the team together.
