The Florida Marlins have tentatively agreed on a four-player deal that would send Juan Pierre to the Chicago Cubs, for three young pitchers -- Sergio Mitre and prospects Renyel Pinto and Ricky Nolasco, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reported early Wednesday.
Not that I ever really thought Pierre was coming here. I was just annoyed at the rumors. In fact, my first mention of the name Pierre here caused me to theorize spinning Aaron Rowand off for a lefty power bat.
The deal is pending physicals examinations.
Yesterday's Sun Times contained an article insinuating that the Sox would beat out the Cubs in their pursuit of Marlins center fielder Juan Pierre during Florida's fire sale.
De Luca and Padilla from the Sun-Times kept saying that the Sox were more likely to land Pierre, and I just couldn't see why. I got to the point where I just stopped reading when I saw his name.
I don't buy it at all. The Sox need an left-handed OPS machine to fill the gaping hole at DH, Pierre doesn't fit this bill at all. -- I would watch the package that the Cubs put together closely, however. There's a good chance that if they don't include Corey Patterson, Florida has it's eyes set on another center fielder to replace Pierre. Rowand at the centerpiece of a deal for Carlos Delgado anyone?
