Top 5 -- Games of the year

New, 11 comments

It's an off-day, and there's not much to talk about, so I thought I'd put together a list of my Top 5 most exciting games of the year. In no particular order.

  1. Opening Day -- MLB box score --Mark Buehrle, who just a week before was thought to be lost for a significant amount of time with a foot injury, pitches a gem, 8 innings of shutout baseball. Jhonny Peralta's bobble on a sharp shot off the bat of Aaron Rowand would allow for the only run of the game. Shingo Takatsu came on to sit the Indians down 1-2-3 in the 9th on just 12 pitches.

  2. Frank's Return -- MLB box score -- My recap -- This was the infamous Jeff Brantley game, where he railed on Ozzie's decision to stick with Mark Buehrle to start the 9th even though he had only thrown 90 pitches. He then blasted him for going with Marte instead of The Closer™. Frank would reinjure himself and force us to be subjected to Timo's game winning shank. Credit Willie Harris for walking, and providing a key steal to put the tying run in scoring position with nobody out.

  3. Fireworks in Detroit -- MLB box score -- My recap -- Frank Thomas hits a solo HR in the 13th to tame the Tigers. Juan Uribe makes one of the defensive plays of the year to keep the game tied in the ninth. Brandon McCarthy has his lone quality start of his time in the bigs. The fireworks game.

  4. Turn back the clock -- MLB box score -- My recap -- This may be the signature victory for the sox on the season. I still have the picture of the mob at homeplate set as my computer desktop. A.J. Pierzynski was the hero, but you've got to give credit again to Willie Harris who was inserted for the sole purpose of stealing second, which he did easily on first pitch. Aaron Rowand would single back through the middle, scoring Harris, before Pierzysnki sent everyone home happy.

  5. New York, New York -- MLB box scores [1] [2] -- My recaps [1] [2] -- OK I'm cheating, but there's about 4 other games I could easily add if I had the time. I don't think I need to recap these. They should be fresh enough in your mind still.

I'm sure you've got some favorite games that I missed. Share them in the comment section. I'll see if I can find my recap for them.
