White Sox call up Leyson Septimo

As expected, the White Sox designated LHP Will Ohman for assignment and replaced him on the roster with LHP Leyson Septimo. In 30.1 IP this season for Triple-A Charlotte, Septimo has given up 14 hits, walked 16 and struck out 39.

The White Sox acquired Septimo off of waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 13, 2011. Septimo is a converted outfielder who began pitching in 2007.

The Dominican has only recently begun to harness his control. His career 7.3 BB/9 has dropped to 4.7 BB/9 this season. His always prodigious strikeout rate sits at 10.6 per 9 innings for Charlotte, very close to his career minor league line.

Septimo has a power arm with a fastball that routinely reaches the upper 90s. He has been basically unhittable for left-handed batters. He also has a slider that can be biting. Everything depends, however, on his ability to locate.

With the addition of Septimo, the White Sox have eight rookies on their roster, including six on their 12-man pitching staff.
