Maybe the headline is overstating it, but tonight should still be pretty good. MLB Network will air its hourlong documentary, "Hawk: The Colorful Life of Ken Harrelson" tonight at 6 p.m. CST, and the press release is entertaining enough.
According to the network's description, the ground covered includes:
- "How Hall of Fame boxer Rocky Marciano offered him a chance to fight former World Heavyweight Champion Sonny Liston at Fenway Park"
- "That he twice turned down offers to be manager of the Boston Red Sox and assisted owner Dick O’Connell in offering the job to Don Zimmer"
- "When Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath explained to him the night before Super Bowl III how the New York Jets were going to beat the Baltimore Colts"
- "How his pro golf career came to an end in a tournament in Florida when an alligator bit off his hand, although he did tear one of the alligator's eyes out during the struggle."
OK, that last one was a minor plot point from "Happy Gilmore." Maybe! I haven't seen it yet, so it's hard to rule anything out.
Ed Sherman has seen it, and he offers a few more details in his Tribune column. It sounds like we might get the story behind the Nehru jacket, but maybe not the Hamburglar getup.
I'll use this post for a live-threading as it airs, so if you're DVRing it, spoiler alerts abound.
