The Red Sox scored their last five runs of the game with only one ball hit out of the infield ... and it was Jackie Bradley Jr.'s two-run double off Leury Garcia in the 14th inning.
How'd that happen? Well, the White Sox bullpen had to carry a 3-1 lead through three innings. Ronald Belisario pitched a 1-2-3 seventh. That's good!
Then Robin Ventura used four pitchers -- Scott Downs, Jake Petricka, Donnie Veal and Maikel Cleto -- to get through the eighth, with Downs and Petricka walking the only batters they faced. That's bad!
Somehow, they got out of a four-walk inning while allowing just one run, but Cleto started the ninth with a pair of walks. Ventura called for Lindstrom, who had the prettiest performance of any White Sox reliever:
- Routine flyout
- Swinging bunt single
- Routine flyout
- Routing groundout
And he's the guy in the bullpen who had to wear the blown save, because the swinging bunt single set up a sac fly, which tied the game.
Lindstrom pitched a 1-2-3 10th, and when Daniel Webb came in, the wildness returned. He walked Dustin Pedroia and plunked Xander Bogaerts, and after a fielder's choice and a sac fly, the Red Sox had the lead.
Given how the game ended, the White Sox probably would've been better off had Tyler Flowers not tied the game with a single. Instead, the game continued. Webb threw two scoreless innings after his sloppy start, but at 58 pitches, he had waded well into longest-outing territory.
With no pitchers left, Ventura turned to Leury Garcia, who retired the first two batters, then walked the next two. Garcia didn't have much of an idea of how to throw strikes from the stretch, and while lobbing pitches in put him back over the plate, it worked a little too well, as Bradley ripped a double down the right-field line to drive in the deciding runs.
Tyler Flowers tried to extend the game with a single in the bottom of the 14th, but an Adam Eaton flyout and a Marcus Semien groundout ended the game.
John Danks pitched well, from what I recall. He only contributed four of the White Sox' 15 walks.
