Perikson7's offseason plan

Perikson7’s Offseason Plan:

I started with a complete tear down and realized that this core is to good to not go for it again so I moved to a quick rebuild. After dealing Quintana to the Dodgers, I realized that it didnt make sense to deal only 1 of sale/quintana so I decided to go for it one more time.

Arbitration-eligible (with projected salaries from MLBTR):

  • Todd Frazier, $13.5M: Tender
  • Brett Lawrie, $5.1M: Tender & Trade
  • Avisail Garcia, $3.5M: Non-Tender
  • Miguel Gonzalez, $2.6M: Tender
  • Dan Jennings, $1.2M: Tender
  • J.B. Shuck, $1M: Non-Tender
  • Jake Petricka, $900K: Tender
  • Zach Putnam, $900K: Tender
  • Daniel Webb, $600K: Non-Tender

Explain the toughest calls if necessary:

Frazier is a pretty easy call. Lawrie will be included in a trade below. Garcia clearly isn't a starting major leaguer and offers nothing in the field so no need to keep him around. Gonzalez is a steal at 2.6M. Jennings was a bright spot in the bullpen this year. Shuck offers nothing and we have 3 guys that can play center as well as him(May, Engel, Tilson). Putnam and Petricka will help solidify the bullpen. Webb eats a roster spot so a Non-Tender is given although I wouldn't mind giving a minor league contract.

Contract options (pick up or buy out)

  • Matt Albers: $3M for 2017 or a $250,000 buyout: No thanks!

Impending free agents (re-sign, let go or qualifying offer)

  • Austin Jackson: Made $5 million in 2016. : Nope, maybe on a minor league contract.
  • Alex Avila: Made $2.5 million in 2016.: Nope
  • Justin Morneau: Made $1 million in 2016, although he signed during the season.: Nope

Elaborate if needed:

No Reason to bring any of them back. Jackson can no longer hold up for an entire season. Morneau was OK, but he's way up there in age and would only be a DH option. Avila is a tough call, but ultimately he cant be relied on so I'll pass.

Free agents

Peruse the list of potential free agents and name two (or more) you would pursue, the max offer you would extend to them, and a brief explainer. A good-bad example:

No. 1: Boone Logan( 2 yr/ 8M). LOOGY. Held lefties to a .139/.222/.225 slash.

No. 2: Greg Holland(1 yr/ 2M + incentives). Stealing this from the other off season plans. Didn't pitch last year, but could bounce back. Most importantly he can strike guys out which this bullpen is lacking. They ranked 21st in baseball last year.

No. 3: Brandon Moss(1 yr/ 5M): Some power off the bench.

No.4: I would throw in a couple cheap starter maybe Tommy Milone, just so we don't have to face him.

Trades

No. 1: Trade RHP David Robertson, 2B Brett Lawrie, Tyler Danish and Jordan Guerrero to the Dodgers for OF Yasiel Puig and C Austin Barnes. Trading Robertson isn't ideal when putting together a roster to contend this year, but salary relief is needed and I am comfortable with Jones closing. Jansen is going to get crazy money. The Dodgers potentially have 2 holes in the infield with Turner and Utley FA's. Turner is going to be really expensive and turns 32 before the start of the season, while Utley is 38 and isnt much of a threat at the plate.

No. 2: Trade RHP Spencer Adams, OF Adam Engel, 3B Trey Michalczewski, and RHP Jordan Stephens to the Pittsburg Pirates for Andrew McCutchen. I'll start by saying I have no clue what the price would be to obtain McCutchen, but I suspect any deal would likely need to include Fulmer. McCutchen is a star, I'm confident last year was a blip on the radar. He also fills the biggest hole aside from Catcher.

No. 3: Trade Thad Lowry and Zach Thompson for C Tyler Flowers. I know this isn't likely at all to happen, but Flowers is far cheaper than Jason Castro and isn't a long term commitment. He's an outstanding framer as we all know and already has a good repoire with our rotation.
