No. 1: Jason Castro (three years, $18M) Haven't had a legitimate catcher on the diamond since A.J Pierzynski. Castro is a very good framer and will help develop young pitchers. Another plus is he's a great voice and leader on the field.
No. 2: Ivan Nova (two years, $10M third year team option $5M) Starting rotation depth. Innings eater.
No. 3: Greg Holland ( one year, $3M second year team option $3M) Low risk high reward out of the bullpen.
No. 4: Brett Cecil (two years, $8M) Solid lefty out of bullpen. Potential trade deadline candidate.
No. 5: Henderson Alvarez (one year, $1M second year team option $1M) Coop project!
No. 1: Trade Jose Quintana, David Robertson and James Shields to the Red Sox for Andrew Benintendi, Rafael Devers, Eduardo Rodriguez, Michael Kopech, Blake Swihart, and Pablo Sandoval) First off with Shields and Sandoval involved in this trade the Red Sox make the money match. We don't pay anymore for Sandoval than we were for Shields. Red Sox receive a top MLB starter, top MLB closer, and a potential comeback starter with a good track record. We recive a future 22 year old centerfielder for years to come, a 20 year old possible future third basemen, a 23 year old left handed starter with Coop's help could get back on track, a 20 year old potential future right handed ace with fastballs in the 95-97MPH range, a question mark in Blake Swihart, and a 3 time World Series champion fatass Thirdbasemn/DH.
2017 25-man Roster
RF Eaton (L)
1B Abreu (R)
LF Melky (S)
3B Frazier (R)
CF Benintendi (L)
2B Lawrie (R)
DH Sandoval (S)
C Castro (L)
SS Anderson (R)
(Henderson Alvarez starts in AAA)
This roster may or may not contend. If we do not have a convincible lead in the AL Central come two weeks before the trade deadline then it's time to start selling off similar to what the Yankees did this previous season. Start with the expiring contract players like Melky, Frazier, Lawrie, etc and go from there. Target prospects from the Dodgers, Astros, Mets and Rangers. The only untouchables on this 25-man would be Benintendi, Anderson, Rodon, and Rodriguez.
