The White Sox strengthened their rotation a bit today by signing RHP Mat Latos to a one year, $3 million deal. Based on reports from Chris Cotillo, the deal has no options or any other incentive.
Latos had an interesting season last year to say the least. In December 2014, he was traded by the Reds to the Marlins. At the 2015 trading deadline, he was traded from the Marlins to the Dodgers. After six games with the Dodgers, he was released and picked up by the Angels where he appeared in two games. He became a free agent after the season.
Although hidden behind the 4.48 ERA with the Marlins and a 6.66 ERA with the Dodgers, Latos put up an OK 3.72 FIP between his stops and picked up 1.5 fWAR in 116⅓ innings. Before an injury filled 2014, Latos had a run of four straight seasons of 3.1 or higher fWAR including a 4.8 fWAR season in 2013.
Once this move becomes official, the 40-man roster will be at 40.
