After Carlos Rodon's ⅓ of an inning start last night, the White Sox sent J.B. Shuck to Charlotte to recall a pitcher today. That pitcher is Erik Johnson.
The fact that Johnson was recalled is a bit surprising. Last week, when presented with the chance to recall a reliever, the White Sox brought up Michael Ynoa. Instead, the Sox have recalled a pitcher that has had a total of three relief appearances in his career.
Before signing Mat Latos, Johnson had been in line for a starting job this season. Instead of making it a competition, Johnson returned to his 2014 form and instead returned to Charlotte for a third season. In two starts so far, he's given up five runs in 10⅔ for a 4.22 ERA. Fortunately, he's been able to find some of his control back and has only walked three while striking out 12 for a 3.05 FIP.
For now, there's been no news on how the Sox plan on using Johnson, but this might be the end of John Danks as a starter with the White Sox.
