The White Sox have started to make use of their expanded September roster by recalling catcher Kevan Smith and RHP Juan Minaya from Charlotte.
larry profiled Kevan Smith earlier this season. In what turned into a series of disastrous debuts with the Sox, Smith never made it to the field after he hurt his back and hit the DL the next day. Since then, the DL and Omar Narvaez have been Smith’s biggest obstacles for returning to the Sox. Also, hitting .219/.291/.399 at Charlotte hasn’t particularly helped his case either.
Minaya turns 26 next month and will be making his major league debut as well. The Sox picked up Minaya off waivers from the Astros earlier this season. While his numbers weren’t terrible with the Astros this season, they didn’t say "call him up" either. The Sox picked him up and Dotson fixed ‘em. At Charlotte, he had a 3.38 ERA / 3.28 FIP while giving up two homers, surprisingly neither were in Charlotte. Brooks Baseball doesn’t have any data on his pitches yet, but as of 2014, he was hitting the upper 90’s.
Both Smith and Minaya were already on the 40-man roster, so it stays at 39.
