biribiri Offseason Plan

Arbitration-eligible (with projected salaries from MLBTR):

  • Jose Abreu, $17.9M - Extend 5/110
  • Avisail Garcia, $6.7M - tender
  • Yolmer Sanchez, $2.1M - tender
  • Carlos Rodon, $2.0M - tender
  • Danny Farquhar, $1.5M - non-tender
  • Zach Putnam, $1.4M - non-tender
  • Leury Garcia, $1.2M - tender
  • Jake Petricka, $1.1M - non-tender
  • Al Alburquerque, $1.1M - non-tender

Abreu doesn't have to be the best player on the team going forward and hopefully he isn't, but he's become the leader and face of this team and he is one of the best hitters in the league. 6/125 or so would be cool too.

The bullpen guys if we can get them on minor league deals that'd be great, will definitely need more bullpen guys at some point.

Impending free agents

  • Geovany Soto: Made $2 million in 2017 - let go
  • Mike Pelfrey: Made $8 million in 2017 - let go

Free agents

Lorenzo Cain, OF, 4yr/65M

Miguel Gonzalez, SP, 1yr/3M

Tyler Clippard, RP, 1yr/5M

Yoshihisa Hirano, RP, 2yr/6M

Miles Mikolas, SP, 2yr/12M

Cain is probably my oddest looking choice here, there are a lot of OF in the sox system but most of them seem like they'll be 4th OF type players at best, guys like Tilson, Cordell, Liriano etc. Basabe and Rutherford look far from sure things as well after this season, and their ETA is a few years away anyway. Robert is a few years away. Cain should provide stability at center for a couple years at least and he's a solid leadoff guy which the sox lack right now. Later years could provide some good veteran leadership to the young OF even if he gets displaced in the field. He shouldn't be terribly expensive either.

Clippard did well while here briefly, maybe he likes it here. Hirano and Mikolas, along with Otani, are the only players from NPB that I'm aware of that are definitely planning to make the move to the majors and I'll gladly take them. Anyone else from Japan I'll probably want them also, except Balentien, don't really want Balentien.

Shohei Otani would be ideal of course, I think the sox can make a decent pitch for him with them due to be good for a while soon, hopefully. I'd also be fine with him DHing for now at least since we don't really have a good DH at the moment.

Trades

Avisail Garcia and Tyler Danish to the diamondbacks for Anthony Banda, Jazz Chisholm, Kristian Robinson, Yasmany Tomas, and cash considerations (half of Tomas' remaining 3yr/$46.5M contract). I [really] do not believe in Avi or in his .400 babip and I don't think his trade value will be any higher than it is right now, which I think still isn't very high. But the d-backs want to replace JD Martinez with someone and they probably can't spend very much to do it, so Avi sounds like a good fit to me. The large alleys in Chase Field should help him leg out more doubles and triples if the home run power once again goes missing for stretches. They could use some relief depth also which would be Danish.

On the return we get Banda, who looks like he could be a good back end lefty starter. I would take Jon Duplantier instead of Banda also. If neither is available I'll even take Shelby Miller but forget about the Tomas part of trade, not eating that contract for 1 year of post TJ Miller, still he might be a nice piece for that 1 year, good flip candidate.

Chisholm is a young middle infield prospect, sox don't have a lot of depth there in the minors, and Robinson was one of the top international signings this year so even younger, both of these guys are from the Bahamas which is kind of neat. And we get Yasmany Tomas, a huge liability in the field but maybe passable as a DH. Perhaps Abreu's and Moncada's Cuban influence could be good for him as well.
