Orajestad’s Offseason Plan

Arbitration-eligible (with projected salaries from MLBTR):

Jose Abreu, $17.9M - Tender

Avisail Garcia, $6.7M - Tender

Yolmer Sanchez, $2.1M - Tender

Carlos Rodon, $2.0M - Tender

Danny Farquhar, $1.5M – Non-Tender

Zach Putnam, $1.4M - Tender

Leury Garcia, $1.2M - Tender

Jake Petricka, $1.1M – Non-Tender

Al Alburquerque, $1.1M - Tender

Explain the toughest calls if necessary:

Farquhar didn’t show enough to prove he isn’t replaceable. Putnam should be healthy by spring training and has recent success. Petricka has looked pretty terrible the last couple seasons while dealing with injury. It’s time to cut the cord.

Impending free agents (re-sign, let go or qualifying offer)

Geovany Soto: Made $2 million in 2017 – Let go

Mike Pelfrey: Made $8 million in 2017 – Let go

Free agents

No. 1: Jarrod Dyson (2 yrs 12 mil) – We need to add another veteran outfielder to the mix. Dyson can play centerfield and split time with the younger outfielders while jumping around all 3 outfield spots. His baserunning and defense could make him a trade chip at this or next summer’s trade deadline.

No 2: Eduardo Nunez (2yrs 14 mil) – Another player who can bounce around multiple positions. He would replace Yolmer Sanchez who will be departing this offseason. Nunez was solid at the plate over 491 PAs last season as well.

No 3: Jaime Garcia (2yrs 16 mil) – Garcia adds a lefty to the rotation and pushes Covey to the #6 starter.

No 4: Robbie Ross Jr (1yr 2mil) – This transaction adds another left handed reliever to the bullpen. Ross has had some success in the past as a reliever but is coming off a back injury last season. He is a bounce back and trade candidate.

No 5: Fernando Abad (1yr 5mil) – Another lefty. Abad has been solid during his career. He would help stabilize what will likely be a fluid bullpen situation and should be tradable at the deadline.

Trades

No. 1: Trade Avisail Garcia and Yolmer Sanchez to Atlanta for Matt Kemp, Kevin Maitan, Max Fried

Trade Avi and Yolmer while their values are high. We take on Kemp’s salary to get a better prospect return. Fried is also a left handed pitcher.

My goals were to add depth to the pitching staff while not blocking some of the young pitchers in the upper minors from coming up this season. I also wanted to add in the outfield and infield while purging Tyler Saladino. Lastly I wanted to scoop up a couple more prospects if possible. This brings the payroll to around $100 million before July trades.
