Southpaw Jackson Off-season Plan

Write "tender" or "non-tender" after each of the following names. Note that you can trade before or after tendering a contract, and that players can also be extended.

Explain the toughest calls if necessary:

Impending free agents (re-sign, let go or qualifying offer)

  • Geovany Soto: Made $2 million in 2017 – Let go

  • Mike Pelfrey: Made $8 million in 2017 – Try to resign and convert late inning high leverage relief pitcher for 5 million

Free agents

No. 1: Jarrod Dyson – 1 year, 2 Million

Dyson could be a good stop gap in center field with some deadline value if he can stay healthy and raise his batting average. His speed on the bases and in the field could also be a valuable veteran on an otherwise youthful Sox squad.

No. 2.: Tyler Chatwood – 2 years, 10 Million (mutual option)

The Sox have a lot of young pitching talent but they will still need quality help the next couple of seasons. Chatwood could provide that for them especially next year when it is uncertain how much Rodon will be able to pitch. He could be a good trade candidate as well if the Sox find themselves flush with major league level rotation talent.

No 1. See what it would take to get the Dodgers to trade Yasmani Grandal

Word is the Dodgers are open to moving him. If the Sox could get Grandal on the cheap, like what the Dodgers got in the Todd Frazier deal, it would be a win. Grandal would give the Sox something they have sorely missed since Tylers Flowers departure, an experienced backstop who excels at pitch framing and handling pitchers. The move would also help Zach Collins too as Grandal is his mentor. Grandal has 1 year remaining on his current deal so the Sox would be in the driver’s seat in deciding whether to try and keep him long term or flip him at the deadline. Grandal also has some pop in his bat as he hit 22 home runs last season which is 16 more than both Smith and Narvaez combined.
