Hakuna_Moncadas Offseason Plan

[Hakuna_Moncada]’s Offseason Plan

First time doing one of these so here goes nothing!

Arbitration-eligible (with projected salaries from MLBTR):

No tough calls here. Putnam gets one more shot.

I would like Rick Hahn to Extend Abreu: 4 years, 80 mil; club option 2022 18 mil). Face of the franchise, mentors to the new guys, yearly .300 hitter and 30 dongs, what’s not to like. Move to DH if he really slows down.

Impending free agents (re-sign, let go or qualifying offer)

Elaborate if needed: N/A

Free agents

Sign SP Tyler Chatwood (1 year, 10 mil)

A reclamation project with more talent than the rest of the heap and at a younger age. If he can stay healthy and eat some innings, RH should be able to flip him for a lotto ticket or two.

Sign SP/RP Hector Santiago (1 year, 5 mil)

I like the option of starting him in the pen as a lefty relief arm while giving Carson Fulmer another shot at starting. If Carson is relegated to the pen, then Santiago can transition back to a starter. I don’t really trust him or Fulmer to take on a large workload so hopefully a tandem will do or one will stick.

Sign RP Anthony Swarzak (1 year, 3.5 mil; club option 2019 3.5 mil)

He somehow found a way to add a few ticks to his stuff Last year and maybe he can catch lightning in the bottle again. He said he liked pitching with this team and for Coop/RR and a club option would let us dump him if he can’t make it work again.

Trades

Matt Davidson, White Sox (No. 13) prospect RHP Spencer Adams and $18M to LAD for Adrian Gonzalez and (No. 6) prospect C Keibert Ruiz and (No. 22) SS prospect Ronny Brito.

We have a plethora of RHP prospects and I don’t have a ton of confidence in Collins becoming a full time catcher. Hahn should pursue depth for the farm at the position and the Dodgers have plenty of catchers with 2 above average, controllable catchers at the MLB level. Ruiz is the #100 rated prospect as a 19 y.o., but is said to have excellent receiving skills and a great nose for contact. We eat a bunch of money for a club trying to avoid the luxury tax and exchange a surplus fringe prospect for one with much higher upside at a position of need. Brito profiles as a plus defender but is only 18 and years away from the majors. Not sure if these kind of deals even happen but I know I’ve seen enough of the Matt Davidson experiment.

I would like to pursue a team friendly extension for Avi but I think he bets on himself and he ends up cashing in.... just not with us. He has a good 2017 follow-up and Hahn deals him at the deadline for a more handsome return than he would have gotten at winter meetings anyway.

I’m guessing Nate Jones and Carlos Rodon will still be on the DL for quite some time so I didn’t include them on the 25 man roster yet. This plan would put the payroll around 95-100 million but allows the Sox to get a couple prospects back in a trade and get some hopefully flippable free agents. I tried to account for guys that will need 40 man protection for rule 5, but I’m all for cutting/waiving/non tendering Jacob May, Tyler Saladino, and Gregory Infante to make room for Jimenez, Guerrero and Jake Peters when necessary. It’s not the most exciting plan in the world but the deadline could be interesting if Avi continues to rake in the first half.
