jdub's offseason plan

I’ll go back to lurking and listening to the podcast after my one post per year

Arbitration-eligible (with projected salaries from MLBTR):

· Jose Abreu, $17.9M tender

· Avisail Garcia, $6.7M tender

· Yolmer Sanchez, $2.1M tender

· Carlos Rodon, $2.0M tender --- DL60?

· Danny Farquhar, $1.5 tender

· Zach Putnam, $1.4M non-tender --- offer a minor league deal

· Leury Garcia, $1.2M tender

· Jake Petricka, $1.1M non-tender

· Al Alburquerque, $1.1M tender

Explain the toughest calls if necessary: I non-tendered the injury risks (besides Rodon) and tendered everyone else. You can usually get a broken guy for less than 9 figures.

Impending free agents (re-sign, let go or qualifying offer)

· Geovany Soto: Made $2 million in 2017

· Mike Pelfrey: Made $8 million in 2017

Elaborate if needed: I’m pretty sure both have been let go already.

Free agents

No. 1: Tyler Chatwood - 3 years 27 mil (7;10;10 – opt out after year 1): This is the SP lotto ticket. He has good stats away from Coors with really questionable peripherals. MLBTR thinks the market will be low for him. I think he’ll be in the drivers seat and will pick the opt out if he bets on himself.

No. 2: Miguel Gonzalez – 1 year 5.5 mil: Welcome back, old friend and 2018 opening day starter.

No. 3 Boone Logan – 1 year 3 mil: Bullpen needs lefties, front office knows him. Speculative fit.

No. 4 Wilin Rosario - 3 year 10.5 mil (4th yr mutual option – 7.5 mil): Annihilated KBO, much like Byung Ho Park and Eric Thames before him. Did not annihilate MLB earlier in his career. DH/1B/emergency 3rd C type. Probably unnecessary until I trade Davidson, which I’ll do.

Trades

No. 1: Trade Avisail Garcia, Trey Michalczewski, Tito Polo and Amado Nunez to the New York Mets for Juan Lagares, Steven Matz, and Patrick Mazeika

Summary: Sell (maybe) high on Avi. He’s now an all-star who mashed last year. The return is a guy with equal skeptics in Matz. He was good. He was mishandled. Then he was bad. Basically, he was a Met. Giving them Avi leads to a crowded outfield, so we’ll take Lagares and a throw-in for a couple throw-ins with potential to be future major league players.

No. 2: Trade Matt Davidson and international bonus $ to the Colorado Rockies for Tom Murphy.

Summary: Rockies are my dark horse for Otani this year. We will give them bonus cash and a Mark Reynolds clone for a position where they have depth and we have needs.

No. 3: Trade James Shields (we’ll cover $6 million), Ian Clarkin, and Danny Mendick to the Oakland Athletics for Chad Pinder

Summary: The Sox and A’s trade with each other a lot. Oakland has a suddenly crowded infield and Pinder can (kind of) mash. Oakland has him buried on the depth chart with even less forseeable time as they give Barreto a consistent role. We can let him start at 3rd base and let Yolmer play wherever. Their rotation is young and could use some veteran leadership. Considering everyone here hates James Shields, let him be that guy.

Rotation: Miguel Gonzalez, Tyler Chatwood, Steven Matz, Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez

Bullpen: Nate Jones, Juan Minaya, Boone Logan, Gregory Infante, Aaron Bummer, Al Alburquerque, Danny Farquhar (woof)

Catchers: 2 of: Omar Narvaez, Kevan Smith, Tom Murphy

Infield: Jose Abreu, Yoan Moncada, Tim Anderson, Chad Pinder, Wilin Rosario (DH), Yolmer Sanchez, Tyler Saladino

Outfield: Nicky Delmonico, Juan Lagares, Leury Garcia, Adam Engel

68 million-ish payroll.
