Spencer Adams isn’t known as a strikeout pitcher, but he was able to dramatically reverse the slide in his start-to-start K-rate by fanning 10 Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp over six innings in Birmingham’s 4-1 loss on Monday.
It was a career-high in strikeouts for Adams, who had previously struck out nine on a couple of occasions in the Arizona Rookie League, but had topped out at eight strikeouts even in A-ball. He entered the start with six strikeouts over his previous 14 innings, which is low for him, but not totally out of character.
Adams provided a rare highlight for the Barons this season. Otherwise, their news of the day was placing Courtney Hawkins on the disabled list. He’s struck out in 35 of his 66 plate appearances this season, but I’m guessing his last 11 plate appearances in particular had something to do with the timing of the roster move:
- Strikeout
- Strikeout
- Strikeout
- Strikeout
- Strikeout
- Strikeout
- Strikeout
- Walk
- Strikeout
- Strikeout
- Strikeout
On to the lone box score, as Charlotte and Winston-Salem were off.
Jacksonville 4, Birmingham 1
- Eddy Alvarez went 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
- Nick Basto singled twice and struck out twice.
- Trey Michalczewski went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.
- Spencer Adams: 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 10 K
