South Side Snub: Spreading from the National Stage to Local

For Sox fans, we shouldn't even be surprised anymore when the Sox aren't given their due of attention. ESPN neglected to mention 2005 a month or so ago, Wheel of Fortune neglected to mention the Sox a week ago. Outside of the Fire, the Sox are the forgotten child of Chicago sports, especially in baseball. To a point, it is understandable with the national media, but on our own home turf we shouldn't get the same mistreatment.

Sure, it's February 20th, you can only talk so much about spring training workouts before things get redundant, but the lack of attention the Sox receive is absurd. Watch any Chicago news station during the 9-10 pm slot, the Cubs will get 1:30 to 2 minutes of air time, while the Sox are lucky to get over 30 seconds. Last night, those glorious 30 seconds were about Yoan Moncada wearing cleats that didn't match club guidelines. Seriously? The Cubs get a legitimate first day for position players update, and we are talking about cleats.

Not once have we heard that there were 66 guys at Spring Training the first week. Nearly the entire team was there before or by the report date for pitchers and catchers. The leadership Jose Abreu has taken on for guys like Moncada, Robert, and Eloy Jimenez. There has been little mention amazing clubhouse atmosphere this team has about them, and their expectations for each other. When they briefly mentioned this it was as if it was some new revelation. These are things that began rolling last season, things that beyond the talent, and are things we haven't seen on this side of town in quite a while. These things are things that are beyond baseball, not to mention all of the on field topics that could be discussed. Hell, the only way you can know this is through Sox beat guys and Chuck Garfien (and of course SSS).

Sure this seems to be full of lots of anguish toward the Cubs, I understand fully why they get so much air time, it pains me to say but they're a good team. Good teams deserve the larger air time, but this shouldn't distract from the fact of the great things happening on the South Side of town and right now in Glendale. This team should be the medias dream because there is so much excitement building around this new era of White Sox baseball. For now though, I'll digress, but will remember this snub when they can't get enough of the team in 2-3 years. They'll be surprised by what we as Sox fans will have known for years.

Oh yes, and Mark Giangreco of ABC 7, Yoan isn't pronounced "Johan" as in Santana.
