If you drew a White Sox top-20 prospect out of a hat, odds are that player has suffered some sort of injury within the past year. The latest setback comes in the form of Micker Adolfo, who “suffered a setback during his throwing program” and will need Tommy John Surgery with an expected recovery time of eight to 10 months Read Brett’s piece for more info about the surgery and how it seemed inevitable, but the news still stinks. Top prospects like Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert, Dane Dunning and Alec Hansen (among others) have all fell victim to the injury bug this season.
Now to tonight’s game...
- Dylan Covey gets the start for the White Sox. Not really sure what has happened to Covey since he posted quality starts against the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians, but it certainly hasn’t been good. Covey’s ERA — at one point 2.29 on June 13 — has risen to 5.54. His 4.71 FIP is somewhat encouraging from where his ERA sits, but his 10.0 H/9 and 4.3 BB/9 won’t win you many games.
- Miles Mikolas gets the start for the Cardinals. Mikolas has been a pleasant surprise for the Birds this season. His WHIP is most impressive, sitting at a paltry 1.03. His 6.2 K/9 means he’ll strike guys out and not issue walks. That will play on a major league team.
- Am I really gonna wrap this up with more injury news? Yeah, well Avisail Garcia is on the 10-day DL with a strained right hamstring. The injury is however considered more mild than the one that held him out for a majority of the first half. Ugh.
