Yes, Eloy Jimenez has done very well with Charlotte, but Thyago Vieira is becoming a top reliever prospect in the system. In the entire month of June, Vieira only allowed two runs and one walk. In contrast, in April and May, Vieira’s BB/9 was at 7.66 and his command was all over the place. His fastball still sits at 95-98 mph, but he is clearly more efficient with his best pitch. His K/9 fell from 13.14 in April and May, to 9.00 in June. He seems to be pitching more to contact, and in turn, he is getting more people out instead of trying to blow batters away with his 80 grade fastball. When Vieira was with the Mariners, his approach was more like this past June. In 2017 between AA and AAA, his K/9 was well under nine but he was walking significantly fewer hitters. He was getting more ground balls and overall, seemingly weaker contact, and Vieira appears to have returned to that old pitching approach. He should be the next man up in the bullpen on the South Side.

Joel Booker came into the season as an afterthought in the stacked Winston-Salem outfield. Now, he is in Birmingham after a fantastic first half in High-A and he has brought that success with him to Birmingham ... maybe. Booker has a lot of speed, which sets him up to have a higher BABIP than the average hitter, but a .414 BABIP is unsustainable by itself. On top of the BABIP, Booker has a 53.3% ground ball rate in his nine games with the Barons, a 9% increase from Winston-Salem. That has led to his fly balls being drastically reduced to 23.3% from 32%, and more than half of his fly balls are in the infield. Booker does not appear to be getting better contact, even though his average would indicate he is. His batting average should fall, but his time as a future relevant prospect is only beginning. He does have a hit tool, and with his speed could be a future fourth outfielder, a la Charlie Tilson. If Booker’s power surge can continue — he already has a career high in home runs and extra-base hits — Sox fans could see him with the Pale Hose next year.

Micker Adolfo and Gavin Sheets had brilliant months of June, worthy of promotion, but Blake Rutherford, another promotion snub, is showing he has the potential to be a four- to five-tool player. He has made a clear effort to swing more often, as his walk rate has nearly been halved. However, an uptick in power makes up for the lack of walks. In June, Rutherford’s slugging percentage was at .500, and his ISO was at a career-high .200. All the while, Rutherford still showed his speed and baserunning ability with eight extra-base hits (sans the home runs) and was 2-for-3 in stolen bases. Next season should be his most important as a prospect. Not only would he be banging on the door to the White Sox, but he will need to blend his old approach of being patient and generating walks while keeping the same power output.

Not much left in Kannapolis, especially in terms of pitching prospects. That is not necessarily a bad thing, because in a few short weeks, 2018 draft picks should start to appear with the I’s. In the meantime, Justin Yurchak had a much better month. After a successful first professional year, with a high BABIP and ground ball rate, Yurchak regressed in his second year. Now, his current season BABIP (.297) is not what Yurchak will be at when he is having a normal year. His power has significantly decreased, as his HR/FB rate has fallen from 13.3% to 2.4%. However, June was a much better month for Yurchak. He finally hit his first home run of the year, and was able to walk more than he struck out. He also was able to increase his batting average while decreasing his BABIP. All of that has led to a wRC+ of 120 in June for Yurchak. If he can continue his June for the next few weeks, Yurchak should see time in Winston-Salem.
