The Chicago White Sox’s 12-8 loss to the Angels on Thursday was just your garden variety, hit a half a dozen homers but still get blown out game.
José Abreu and Daniel Palka both went deep twice, with Nicky Delmonico and Avisaíl García also left the yard, but the White Sox failed to hold a lead at any point after the second inning.
Dylan Covey was drubbed for nine hits, six earned, two walks, and two homers while mustering just two Ks over 4 2⁄3 innings, ending with a game score of 18 that was his second-worst of the season. Xavier Cedeño and Jace Fry held the fort, but Juan Minaya and Chris Volstad combined to surrender six earned on six hits over just 1 2⁄3 innings.
The White Sox were short a pitcher, after dealing Joakim Soria earlier in the day, but just one Charlotte arm wasn’t going to rescue the South Siders this afternoon.
Offensively, the White Sox made a better show of it. But in spite of six homers, the Angels still outhit (16 to nine) and out extra base hit (eight to six) the Chicagoans, sending the White Sox home with a series split.
That’s right, the White Sox clouted six homers, but no doubles or triples — and just three singles.
Abreu’s post-All Star Game pride tour continues, as he went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Chicago also went deep three times in the seventh, for novelty’s sake. All but Abreu’s second clout, with two out in the ninth to draw the White Sox within four, were solo shots.
The White Sox return home to face a disappointing Toronto Blue Jays team, beginning tomorrow night. Marcus Strotman faces Reynaldo López in a matchup sure to provide some feist and spice.
