Alrighty...let’s start with some roster moves that happened just one day after the White Sox traded Joakim Soria to the Milwaukee Brewers for two pitching prospects. The team promoted relievers Tyler Danish and Thyago Vieira from the Charlotte Knights to join the big league club tonight. So, Michael Kopech and Eloy Jimenez (and Ian Hamilton) will have to wait a bit longer to make their major league debuts this season.
So, what do Danish and Vieira bring with them to the majors? A lot of walks and a lot of strikeouts is the short answer to that. Danish has posted a 6.4 K/9 and a 3.62 BB/9, while Vieira has recorded an 11 K/9 but a 5.3 BB/9. Vieira has limited his walk rate as of late, though, allowing just three walks over his last 17 appearances.
Danish has also been pretty good lately. He has a 1.07 ERA over his last seven outings in July. Danish has been with the major league club before, but hasn’t found much consistent success under the bright lights.
Lastly, the Sox announced they designated Chris Volstad for assignment. The big man might want to consider hanging up the cleats after a long career. He posted a mighty 6.27 ERA in 33 appearances with the Sox this season.
As for the game tonight...Reynaldo Lopez takes the bump for the Sox. Lopez allowed five first inning runs to the Mariners his last time out, but did settle down throughout the game. He unfortunately has a 5.80 ERA over his last seven starts, so he’s looking for one of those April/May starts that ended with him leaving in the seventh inning.
Marcus Stroman gets the ball for the Blue Jays — Tim Anderson beware. Stroman has started six games since coming off the disabled list in June and has shown flashes of his old self. He is coming off one of his best starts of the year against the Baltimore Orioles (I think Volstad might have a good start against that team), throwing seven innings of one-run ball.
