The top guys in Charlotte, well, played like top guys. Eloy Jimenez, Michael Kopech, and Ian Hamilton, who are all candidates for a promotion, hit and pitched to back up their prospect status, but Jimenez is on another stratosphere.
After coming off of his injury, Jiménez did not lose a step, which has caused a bit of an uproar from Sox fans about his promotion status. He leaves July with a 260 wRC+ and a .403 ISO, all career-bests for a month (although just half a month of games played). Jiménez came out hacking and did not stop, he swung at everything, but was able to make contact as he only struck out 10.4% of his plate appearances. The downside (maybe) was that his walk percentage fell to 4.5% and he only walked in two games, but Jiménez clearly understands the strike zone. Even with six homers in 16 games, Jiménez still had a .420 BABIP so this production will not keep up. But in a month with a 1.293 OPS and 13 extra-base hits, he is still clobbering the ball to all sides of the diamond. Thirty percent of the balls hit by Jiménez have gone to the opposite field, including a few homers, which led to FanGraphs upgrading Eloy’s raw power to a future 80 grade. He does have a few too many infield flies (32.4%), but with a 23.5% home run per fly ball rate, his approach at the plate is working.

Kodi Medeiros: 22 IP, 3.45 FIP, 10.64 K/9, 3.27 BB/9 — not in the White Sox system
Nobody can deny Dylan Cease has the talent to be a top-of-the-rotation starter, but he is now a rising star with this dominant stint in Birmingham. It started out rocky, with five earned in less than five innings, but since then, Cease has had three outings with no runs allowed, including his last 13 innings. Going deeper into games was a key category to improve on for Cease, and he has done better. His command is still impacting his pitch count, but he averaged six innings per game in July. Cease has been unlucky with home runs in AA; is fly ball percentage fell 3%, his infield flies went up 7.9%, but his HR/FB went up 4.4% without a reason to think he is getting hit harder. Cease’s pull percentage has gone down 7.7%, and his oppo percentage went up 7.2%, indicating that hitters are having trouble tracking Cease. He has surpassed his career high in innings so with a month-plus left in the season, so Cease may be in play for extra rest.

Hunter Schryver: 11 IP, 3.49 FIP, 9.00 K/9, 1.64 BB/9, 1 save - not in the White Sox system
Ian Clarkin fell off every White Sox Top 30 prospect list, and for reason beyond injury. He was barely striking out hitters, with a 3.88 K/9, and walking more batters (4.44 BB/9) and all the while having a 5.85 FIP in AA — not so good. Since Clarkin’s return from injury, he has been logging relief innings and doing it well. On his rehab assignment in Arizona, he had a 9.35 K/9 and 3.12 BB/9. While pitching in Winston-Salem after his official demotion from AA, Clarkin has a 7.04 K/9 and a 3.52 BB/9, though at 23 he is older than the average age on both levels. His days as a starting pitcher should not be behind him, but the positive improvement of his overall numbers as a reliever is encouraging. His pull percentage has dropped considerably and his ground ball rate is closer to his New York Yankees rate as well. Can the Sox recoup value after an abysmal start and injury? Probably not, but Clarkin seems to be able to handle being a reliever.

Whatever it says more about the 2017 draft class or the 2018 draft class, Nick Madrigal, Ian Dawkins, Bennett Sousa and Andrew Perez have become high-impact players from day one in Kannapolis. Madrigal has gone 53 at-bats with a strikeout, all the while taking pitches given to him and plopping them into the opposite field 48.8% of the time in A-. Dawkins, though an older draft pick, has been able to use his speed as advertised, but he also has 11 extra-base hits in 41 games. Sousa has been electric on the mound, with a K/9 well better than 10 and is allowing ground balls as more than 60% of the balls in play. Lastly, Perez has been in Kannapolis the longest, and deservedly so. He does not boast the the K-rate of Sousa but seems to be allowing weaker contact, as 52.8% of the batted balls go to the opposite field. Seems like the early dividends of the 2018 draft are already paying off.
