White Sox Minor League Update: August 26, 2018

It was a fun day today in the minors, with home runs from Zack Collins, Gavin Sheets and Steele Walker

Starburst: Gavin Sheets hit only his fifth home run of the year in the Dash’s 8-4 loss.
Winston-Salem Dash

Charlotte Knights 10, Gwinnett Stripers 4

Ryan Cordell: 1-for-3, 3 R, 2 BB, 1 K

Charlie Tilson: 3-for-5, 1 R, 3 RBI, 0 BB, 0 K

Eloy Jimenez: 3-for-4, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K **MVP**

Welington Castillo: 1-for-5, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Seby Zavala: 3-for-5, 1 R, 2 RBI, 0 BB, 1 K

Jordan Guerrero: 5 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 10 K

Caleb Frare: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

Charlotte scored nine runs in the first four innings, which probably should always be enough to win the game, and today the Knights did. Ryan Cordell, Charlie Tilson, Eloy Jimenez and Seby Zavala all had big games. In total, the Knights recorded 15 hits and walked six times, so they had plenty of runners on base. Jordan Guerrero looked dominant early, but had trouble in the fifth inning. Caleb Frare came in and was able to quiet down the Stripers with two shutout innings.

Birmingham Barons 2, Jackson Generals 0

Joel Booker: 1-for-4, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Luis Basabe: 1-for-3, 0 BB, 2 K

Zack Collins: 1-for-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 0 BB, 0 K **MVP**

Alex Call: 1-for-3, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 SB

Matt Tomshaw: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K

Zack Collins opened up the scoring with a two-run homer in the first, his 15th longball of the year. Matt Tomshaw was able to take the lead and run with it for seven shutout innings. Tomshaw left with a game score of 82, lowering his ERA to 5.27 in AA. Only the top of the lineup was successful, as each of he first four Bham hitters recorded a hit. Luis Basabe’s hit was his seventh double in Birmingham. But as it turned out, all Tomshaw and Brian Clark needed to win the game was Collins’ homer in the first.

Buies Creek Astros 8, Winston-Salem Dash 4

Luis Robert: 0-for-2, 0 BB, 1 K

Luis Gonzalez: 0-for-0, 1 R, 2 BB, 0 K

Blake Rutherford: 1-for-3, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Gavin Sheets: 2-for-3, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 0 BB, 0 K **MVP**

Laz Rivera: 0-for-4, 0 BB, 3 K

Kyle Kubat: 13 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Everything looked great in the top of the first. Gavin Sheets found his power stroke and hit a three-run homer. However, Kyle Kunay had some trouble in the bottom of the first. He was only able to record one out in allowing seven runs. The game was already over for the Dash, and it was not until the eighth inning where they scored another run, which also came off the bat of Sheets (RBI single). With the playoffs clinched, individual improvement is paramount, and hopefully Sheets has found his power.

Kannapolis Intimidators 3, Augusta GreenJackets 2

Luis Curbelo: 2-for-4, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Steele Walker: 1-for-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 0 BB, 0 K **MVP**

Ian Dawkins: 1-for-3, 0 BB, 0 K

Zach Lewis: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K

The I’s almost had a complete win, if not for an error accounting for two runs in the fifth inning. Zach Lewis saw those unearned runs cross the plate in his quality start. His ERA continues to fall, and it is now at 2.65. Steele Walker opened up the scoring with a two-run homer in the fourth inning, but the error erased Kanny lead. Craig Dedelow, on his 11th homer of the year, took the lead back in the seventh inning. Jose Nin would close down the game, and his ERA is down to 1.69 with the I’s.

Missoula Osprey 6, Great Falls Voyagers 5

Romy Gonzalez: 2-for-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 0 BB, 1 K **MVP**

Lenyn Sosa: 2-for-4, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Bryce Bush: 2-for-5, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 SB

Matt Portland: 5 23 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

Romy Gonzalez got the Voyagers off on the right foot with a leadoff home run. He went on to add another RBI on a single. Meanwhile, Matt Portland was sailing through the game, but an error led to two unearned runs in the sixth inning and he was removed. Bryce Bush also had himself a game, with a double and a single to get his batting average back over .300.
