Tim Anderson, Bat-Flips, and Fun

Tim Anderson has said that bat flips are part of having fun in the game for himself and fans. He’s right.

Not-Bat-Flipping has been one of those unwritten rules that players have gone along with for years. Those rules can change with the times.

In basketball, hanging on the rim has become commonplace after not being "allowed".

In football, elaborate touchdown celebrations are now commonplace after not being "allowed".

In hockey, fist-pumping after scoring a goal is commonplace after many years of tamer celebrations.

Baseball has a lot of traditions and superstitions, like not stepping on the baseline chalk and other things. Anderson is right to start a trend that baseball needs to bring more fun back into the game and to (heck) with the "rules".

Baseball games routinely now stretch into three hours or more. Endless pitching changes. Analytics. Pitchers who continue to waste too much time between pitches and who have a fit if you dare to suggest a pitch clock. Too many players who swing for the fences and end up striking out too much.

Baseball needs an infusion of fun. Games need to be shorter. Pitchers need to throw the (darn) ball more quickly. Bat-flips after homers for those who wish to do so.

And the most fun of all? The South Siders becoming winners again. And Tim Anderson is doing his part in more ways than one. Who's next?
