The Jumbo Shrimp have been dominating the Barons this series. Tonight, a hole was dug early, as starter Alec Hansen had very rough outing (four runs and five walks in only 1⁄3 of an inning). Taking over was Kodi Medeiros, in at least his second long relief outing of the season, and the southpaw had a nice night on the mound (no runs, six Ks in 4 2⁄3 innings).
Luis Basabe hit a solo shot in the bottom of the third to put the Barons on the board. Birmingham would score their last two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a Gavin Sheets single and Blake Rutherford triple. A wild pitch by closer Zack Burdi allowed a run to score in the top of the ninth, and the Barons were sunk.
Birmingham has lost four straight ballgames to Jacksonville, flagging at the finish line for the first half.
Luis Basabe delivered his first home run of the season with an opposite-field blast, but the Barons fell short against @JaxShrimp on Saturday night.

His 5.2 hitless innings was the longest no-hit bid for a Dash pitcher since @Ddunning33 went 6.1 no-hit innings on 4/11/18 at Myrtle Beach.
It's 1-1 going into the 7th at Carolina.

Winston Salem and the Mudcats had a close battle tonight, but the Dash unfortunately came up short. Winston starter Konnor Pilkington had a stellar night, allowing only one run in six innings, with seven strikeouts. Pilkington has really been on his A-game this season. Outfielder Tyler Frost blasted a homer to get the ballgame started in the top of the first.
All-Star Will Kincanon got the loss for the Dash after leaving runners at the corners in the eighth for reliever Luis Ledo to handle, but Ledo would give up a two-run double that would prove to ice the game for Carolina. Zach Remillard tried to get something going in the top of the ninth, with a home run to left field, but that would be it for the Dash Boys. Winston-Salem will end the first half in second place. The team has been playing very well and I look forward to seeing how they do in the second half. Maybe there are playoffs yet in store!
Despite solo homers from @Zachyflat7 and @tyler_frost, along with a brilliant outing from @KPilk44, the Dash fall 4-2 at Carolina on Saturday. pic.twitter.com/EpTaUXaIql

Kannapolis Blanked Saturday Night

RECAP I https://t.co/vwG3m9DqtB pic.twitter.com/ng4bLZ4Y6h
This Kannapolis team has been struggling since day one of the season. Starter Jonathan Stiever allowed a solo shot to get the game started, but after that calmed down and pitched very well. He gave up no more runs and collected five strikeouts over five innings against the Grasshoppers.
Stiever was replaced on the mound in the sixth by Andrew Perez, who went three solid innings for Kannapolis. Perez has been getting stretched out in the first half, forecasting a possible long relief or starter role in his future. Tonight, he allowed no runs and got four strikeouts. The Intimidators were silent with the bats tonight, though. One exception was Alex Destino, with two hits and a walk, but sadly nothing came out of it. At least there were Disney-themed fireworks tonight!
That’s a wrap!

Great Falls Voyagers 5, Missoula Osprey 3
Harvin Mendoza (1B): 2-for-3, R, HR (1), 2 RBI (2) (.167 BA, 1.042 OPS)
Lency Delgado (SS): 1-for-4, 2 RBI (2), 2 K (.286 BA, .661 OPS)
Sam Abbott (DH): 1-for-2, BB, 2B (1), (.500 BA, 1.667 OPS)
Carter Love (SP): 5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, BB, 4 K, W (1-0), 71 pitches/51 strikes (3.60 ERA)
Nate Pawelczyk (RP): IP, 3 K, H (1) (0.00 ERA) **co-MVP**
Karan Patel (RP): IP, 2 H, ER, BB, 2 K, H (1) (9.00 ERA)
Nick Johnson (RP): IP, 3 K, Sv (1) (0.00 ERA) **co-MVP**
Great Falls earned a decisive first win on Saturday, paced by a juicy smash from Harvin Mendoza, a solid start by Carter Love, and exquisite relief work from Nate Pawelczyk and closer Nick Johnson.
Big (6´6´´), bad College of Charleston product Love has been nothing but tuff in his pro career, extending his career mark to 6-1 with a 2.66 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. Ditto Nick Johnson, who at least one SSS writer dubs as the best closer in the White Sox organization (sorry, Sr. Colomé).
The Great Falls staff ripped off 13 strikeouts against just two walks, including whiffs for eight of the last nine outs of the game; Pawelczyk and Johnson both struck out the side. This Voyagers bullpen is shaping up to be hellfire for Pioneer League opponents in 2019.
Cesar Jiménez (2B): 1-for-5, 2 K, E (3) (.111 BA, .311 OPS)
Ruben Benevides (C): 2-for-4, 3 R, 2 2B (2), BB, K, SB (1) (.313 BA, .791 OPS)
Edwin Peralta (SS): 2-for-3, R, RBI (6), BB, SB (1) (.216 BA, .611 OPS)
Roberth Gutierrez (CF): 3-for-3, R, 3B (2), 2 RBI (5), BB (.308 BA, .917 OPS), 2 assists (at 3B and home) **MVP**
Homer Cruz (SP): 4 2⁄3 IP, 7 H, 5 R, ER, 2 BB, 4 K (3.21 ERA)
Luis Nin (RP): 2 1⁄3 IP, H, 2 K (5.91 ERA)
Edwin Peralta, listed as a first baseman but — what the hell it’s the DSL — playing shortstop today, had two hits and no errors. That’s nice. Cesar (nee Enoy) Jiménez, listed as a shortstop but playing at second, had two Ks and his third error. That’s not.
Meanwhile, we got a backstop in the Dominican who can hit and maybe even field: Ruben Benavides, who among other things mashed a coupla doubles, stole a base, and managed not to make an error — the latter always a moral victory in the slipshoddery of our lowest organizational level.
But props to the star of the day, one Roberth Gutierrez, who was all over the place. In center field, he was flawless and, oh, threw out runners at home and third base for good measure. At the plate, oh, hey, Gutierrez went 3-for-3 with his second triple of the season. Who knows, maybe he gives that Roberts guy roaming center in Birmingham a run for his money one day.
