Seby Zavala: .313 BA, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 0 BB, 2 K
Danny Mendick: .304 BA, 2 HR, 4 R, 4 RBI, 3 BB, 4 K
Daniel Palka: .480 BA, 2 HR, 7 R, 10 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K **MVP of the Week**
Matt Foster: 3 IP, 9.61 FIP, 12.0 K/9, 0.0 BB/9
Thyago Vieira: 3 IP, 2.61 FIP, 9.0 K/9, 3.0 BB/9
Zach Thompson: 4 IP, 4.36 FIP, 11.25 K/9, 0.0 BB/9
Dylan Cease: 5 2⁄3 IP, 3.26 FIP, 11.12 K/9, 4.76 BB/9
So, what’s up with Dylan Cease? Before June, Cease had mostly looked as advertised. He had a 3.26 ERA in 47 innings to go along with 54 strikeouts. He was walking opposing hitters a little too often, but his command was nothing to be concerned with. He was actually getting hit, with a .258 batting average against, but it was with a .355 BABIP and he only allowed three home runs. This June, things have been a lot different. In 16 1⁄3 innings so far this month, Cease has an 8.82 ERA with just 13 strikeouts. The command has not been there, with 11 walks, but home runs continued to not be an issue. The real issue, besides the notable lack of command, is that Cease’s already-iffy batting average against has gotten much worse. Opposing hitters have a .338 batting average against, with a .404 BABIP. Thus the batting average should fall, but the increase in batters on base and decrease in strikeouts has hurt Cease a lot this month. Interestingly enough, June 2018 was also when Michael Kopech started his struggles — and he was in Chicago by August.
