Well, well, the Glendale Desert Dogs knocked off the best team in the early AFL, the Scottsdale Scorpions, 1-0. And the winner was ... Bennett Sousa!
Glendale Desert Dogs 1, Scottsdale Scorpions 0
Gavin Sheets (1B) 0-for-3 (.000 BA)
Micker Adolfo (RF) 0-for-2, BB, 2 K (.167 BA)
Blake Rutherford (LF) 0-for-2, 2 K (.100 BA)
Bennett Sousa (RP, eighth) IP, H, 8 pitches/6 strikes, W (1-0) (0.00 ERA)
OK, perhaps an even bigger headline than Sousa getting the first Desert Dogs win is that, phew, the hitting in the AFL sure seems awful out of the gate!
No, just joking ... I mean, the offense has pretty much disappeared in Arizona, but the second big storyline here is ... Adolfo playing the field! And not just that, but his arm was tested ... and passed, with flying colors! Yep, Joey Bart hit a single in the fifth, tried to sneak to second on the play — and Adolfo gunned him down. He handled two other chances (fly outs) without incident, so the big man is back on the playing field. Sweet!
Otherwise, obviously all of the White Sox farmhands are bringing Twizzlers up to the plate, batting a collective .045 (or thereabouts). Yeesh.
